The S-34C from Jasmine is a grand orchestra-style acoustic guitar featuring a spruce top, sapele back and sides, and a satin natural finish. The sleek, Venetian single-cutaway body offers a rich, well-balanced sound, while the slim neck and 25.5" / 648mm scale provide a comfortable feel and smooth playability; making the instrument well suited for solo performances or playing with an ensemble. Other features include a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, chrome covered tuners, full body binding, and a synthetic bone nut and compensated saddle. The S-34C comes set up with phosphor bronze light-gauge (.012-.053) strings.

are the strings nice and close to the neck or are they pretty far out?

I'd say close since my 13 year old has no trouble playin it and I think she would struggle with a high action. Also she switched to Martin Silk & Sleel strings which are great for a beginner.
