Tamrac Stratus 21 Reviews

I miss the older Tamrac series!

I've owned a number of Tamrac bags in my lifetime. Some I've sold off as I've changed gear. But, the best Tamrac bag I ever owned was the very first one, a model 614 I got around 1983-84. That bag was awesome, very well constructed, extremely flexible, and easy to use. Unfortunately that bag was stored improperly for a few years, and when I got it back out of storage, I found it had been exposed to moisture and had mildewed. I tried to salvage it, but it was beyond hope. I haven't been able to find a bag of the same quality since then. I currently have a newer model 612, but it's not made the same as the same series from the 1980's. But, I recently started expanding my equipment roster, and needed a bigger bag. Looking on Tamrac's website, this Stratus 21 was the closest thing I could find to my old 614. I figured it'd be close, but there are some big differences. First off, I don't think Tamrac's bags are as well made as they were back then. The outer material seems to be thinner, and the inner lens bridge system and velcro compartment dividers seem to be somewhat different. Although it appears to be about the same size on the exterior, there's not as much room inside. Now to be fair... a lot of the lenses I have now are bigger than what I used to have when I was using 35mm. Back then I had all primes except for one 70-210 zoom. Most of the ones I have now are zooms, and some pretty good sized zooms at that. These lenses have a lot wider barrels than my old 35mm lenses. So, I'm sure that's a big part of it. I'm going to give this bag a try. I haven't had it but a couple weeks, and I haven't even taken it out for a shoot yet, so I need to actually get it out in the field before I make any real decisions. With this being said... I have always preferred the layouts in the Tamrac bags over other brands such as Domke, LowePro and etc. At the moment I'd have to say this bag is OK, but I might change my opinion later on.

This is THE bag!

This is the bag I'd been searching for. It is perfectly designed and more than enough room for my whole kit. Highly recommend.

Will the Tamrac Stratus 21 hold a Nikon D7500 with a Sigma 150-600mm lens attached and leave room for other small lenses?
Asked by: Penny
Don't know for sure as I don't know how big that lens is. It's really big though. I use it mostly as my all storage. Nikon Z and Nikon D750, Nikon 28-300, 75-300, 18, 50, flash, and lots of other stuff. It is too big to carry on a hike, but good enough in the car or if going on a big trip. I have a smaller bag for hiking/treking to get photos.

question

Does this bag meet airline carryon limits? Also, can you store a Canon 100-400mm lens vertically in this bag? Thanks!
Asked by: Thomas
The Stratus 21 is the largest of the Stratus family of shoulder bags. Depending on the size of the plane you're traveling on the bag should fit an oversized overhead compartment. Certainly, it will not fit a regional CR-J plane but a long-haul sized plan should accommodate the bag. According to B&H.com Canon EF100-400mm specs, the lens is approx 7.44 tall and the Stratus 21 is internally 10 deep so the lens should fit.
