Key Features
  • Circular Polarizer Filter
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze in Landscapes
  • Greater Color and Tonal Saturation
The Nikon 82mm Circular Polarizer Filter II helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

Nikon Circular Polarizer II Overview

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.

This product is VERY well constructed and does the job well. Your external cap will still fit (a plus for me) and the imagery is unaffected by the lens. I do not detect any aberrations and consider this a must needed addition to my kit.

I have a a Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens. Will I get vignetting?
Asked by: Edward
I see some sort of vignetting from low light or large scale landscape pictures, but not sure if it is from the lens or the filter. On the other hand, I use this filter mainly for filtering out bright white spots stemmed from reflection, to make green leaves and grass greener, and blue water bluer. If pursuing greener trees and bluer water is not your main purpose, I don't recommend using polarizer filter.

Is this good for birds (Hawks with a lot of contrast) in flight on an extremely bright sunny blue sky day?
Asked by: Melanie
The Nikon Circular Polarizer Filter II is mainly for landscapes, reducing reflections from water or glass, enhancing fall foliage or increasing contrast in the sky. While it can reduce the glare off of bird feathers, a polarizer filter has about 1-2 stop loss of light depending on the amount of polarization being used. This would affect your shutter speed so it would not be good to use a polarizer for wildlife or bird photography.
