Nikon HB-71 Overview

The Nikon HB-71 Bayonet Lens Hood is compatible with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. A dedicated lens hood is designed to match the angle of view of the lens it was designed for. Since the end of the lens is extended while the hood is in use, additional protection from accidental impacts to the lens's front element is provided as well.

I considered saving a few bucks with one of those third-party hoods that screw into the lens filter threads, but decided they might put more stress on the threads than they're designed to handle. This is a heavy lens, and dropping it on the hood could be disastrous. The bayonet mount is secure - I haven't yet managed to knock it loose, despite the bumping it takes on my birding trips. Made with a lightweight but sturdy plastic; I think this is one of those cases where you can justify the cost of genuine Nikon gear.

Is there a metal one? I broke the third plastic OEM, and it's expensive.

Nikon only makes a plastic version of the hood but you could use this 95mm metal screw in hood by Heliopan instead: https://bhpho.to/3DiWF8t. However, the Heliopan is not specifically made for the optics of a 200-500mm lens so it might vignette the photo or allow a flare while the Nikon hood will not vignette and blocks the most flares.
