Great for spotting scope

Bought this for a 60x spotting scope and have to say it exceeds expectations in almost every way. Single handle makes for smooth panning and the setup feels rock solid. Works for whole family. Only downside is it is pretty heavy to carry around in a pack but we plan to use mostly from home or near the car.

great tripod for video

Was looking for a setup for video for basketball games. First tripod I got had a terrible release system. Second tripod had a clunky pan. So i visited B&H in person and went to tripods upstairs and they guided me to this tripod and head. The pan on this is wonderfully smooth. And the quick release is gorgeous. Quick release is metal. After the plate is fastened to your camera, the mechanism takes a split second to mount. And a split second to remove. Very happy with purchase. It's got some weigh to it, for sure. But i wanted sturdy. And this is great.

It works

I bought this tripod for use with birding telescopes. It sets up easily thanks to the flip-locks on the legs and carries comfortably thanks to the insulated grip on one let (and the tote bag). I like the double-lever lock on the head's quick mount and the smooth pan and tilt. Image quiver damps fairly fast, but not instantly, after panning. For the purpose it is close to ideal. The only drawback is that the first leg splay setting is a bit too narrow and the others are rather wide. I'd have had the first setting about 5 degrees wider for each leg. As it is the first two splay settings are I'll be really careful and wow, this thing takes up real estate. Something in between would be nice. On the plus side, it's easy to switch between leg splay settings.

Does this 290 allow you to change heads to a photo application?
Asked by: David
The Manfrotto 290 Xtra Aluminum Tripod with 128RC Micro Fluid Video Head (B&H# MAMK290XTA32) is a combination of the Manfrotto MT290XTA3US 290 Xtra Aluminum Tripod (B&H# MAMT290XTA3U) and the Manfrotto 128RC QR Micro Fluid Head (B&H# MA128RC). The tripod may be used with many other heads, and the head may be used with many other tripods. So, yes, you could remove the 128RC QR Micro Fluid Head and replace it with a head that is more commonly used for taking still photographs.

Not being an expert on tripods, could this one also be used as a regular fixed tripod for taking photos?

There is nothing to stop you from taking photos while using this head, however the camera will only align in a landscape position. To turn the camera in to portrait you will need an L-Bracket such as the Manfrotto Q2 L Bracket. https://bhpho.to/3kOx64f

question

How does one keep it from unscrewing when panning left? I can't figure this out. Frustrating.
Asked by: Anonymous
If you look on the underside of the top plate that the head is screwed into, you will see a single set screw. Using a small flat head screwdriver, tighten that screw.
