Manfrotto 290 reviews

290 Xtra Aluminum Tripod with 128RC Micro Fluid Video Head is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from May purchase again... Two flaws that in my opinion withhold a 5-star review: 1) The locking mechanism is often sticky (maybe that's a good thing ensuring my camera doesn't take a spill) but it took a while to figure out that pressing down on the locking button of the mechanism will retract it far better than the pin which instructions led me to believe should have singularly done the job. 2) The head mount could have been better designed as the fluid video head comes off through twisting and also is loosened to allow for panning through twisting. But watch out because there don't seem to be enough threads differentiating the one from the other and my own mount (thankfully sans camera) already took a spill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best in its Class The 290 Xtra Aluminum Tripod with 128RC Micro Fluid Video Head is an excellent tripod and a superb value for anyone who is tired of the usual line of in-store tripods. The movement of this tripod lives up to its name. It is fluid and easy to swivel in any direction while maintaining complete control. The adjustable height allows the user the flexibility needed to get the perfect angle every time. As a professional, I consider this tripod the best in its class.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stupendous, reliable tripod I was looking at so many different tripods, and I ordered a very fancy Manfrotto, but it when I got it it was not practical for my 70d. So I ordered this one and I love it! It's very portable and the quick release head can get some great shots. The clamps can be tightened easily if needed, which is great for maintainability over time. If you have a DSLR, this tripod is a must have and will last a long time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inexpensive video tripod undone by smallest detail. Legs/support are perfectly fine, no issues. Not exactly lightweight, but I didn't have the $$ for carbon-version. Likewise the 128RC video head is entry-level; nothing fancy but smooth enough for basic panning/tilting. Big problem with the (included) plate; main locking-screw good, but secondary ant-rotation pin failed to be removable. As I was trying to mount a DSLR, with no secondary cavity, big issue. Manual: remove pin P from plate G by pushing it out from above. The cheap plastic pin refused to to recess, after numerous and varied attempts to do so. No success in getting it to release or recede! Previous Bogen/Manfrotto plates I've owned (over 40 years) had metal-threaded pins; never any problems. I have no idea if this is a design-flaw, or just a one-off issue. Either way, not sure just how many pennies Manfrotto saved by going with the el cheapo plastic pin...sad.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fits the job. But tripod is shaky I needed a tripod for a camera stand. Light panning, and really mostly for photography and very light video. Imagine my surprise when I realized my old Velbon did a better job and this tripod. The fluid head is great, but unscrews constantly causing a jerk and loose panning. The legs are too light, and will move if you pan sometimes. This is from using 3 times. I suppose going for heavier legs is the solution, but having this tripod makes me miss my first cheap Velbon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A serious tripod This is a step up from a $50 tripod I used with my old spotting scope for about 20 years. I got a Vanguard HD scope (82mm) and wanted a tripod worthy of the task. This will certainly do it. I've been waiting for years for this upgrade, and this tripod is a huge part of it. I seriously expect this to be my last tripod. Seems very thoughtfully designed and well made. Pros: SOLID. Very good platform for my scope. Metal shoe for the QR plate is nice as well. Smooth. Pans and tilts very well. No stutter, no inconsistency. Cons: It isn't light. This is also a bit of a pro in my opinion as it keeps things stable in the wind. But carrying it around is a bit of a chore. A good strap helps a lot. Note: The head comes attached, but the set screw is not set, so the head will unscrew until you take care of this. I found tightening the head down, turning in the set screw, then cranking on the head to get it to loosen any and turning in the set screw more made it very solid and only took a few minutes. If you fully remove the head and see the waves in the base this makes sense. You want the screw to be in one of the valleys.
