Hoya XHD3-82CRPL overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 82mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

While providing over 92% light transmission, 8 layers of anti-reflection nano coatings on each side, for a total of 16 layers, are applied to the Hoya 82mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter. These coatings offer a high degree of protection to the filter substrate and help it to stay clean for longer than uncoated filters. The nano coating formula associated with HD3 Circular Polarizer filters results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency and is also effective with regard to oil and stains while also helping to prevent scratches.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
8-layer nano multicoated on each side, for a total of 16 layers, provide an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning that is also effective with regard to oil and stains while helping to prevent scratches.
Approximately 92% average light transmission.
Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity.
1.25x filter factor reduces exposure by 0.3 stops.
Thin and durable aluminum-alloy filter ring minimizes the potential for vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

    Hoya XHD3-82CRPL reviews

82mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from No tinting It is one of the most expensive circular polarizing filters available, but I went for it after finding that a leading and very well-reviewed competitor's similar model imparted an annoying warming tint to all the photos. Used on my Canon 100-400mm F4-5-5.6L II USM lens, the Hoya is thin, rotates easily without binding, secures the Canon lens cap completely, and imparts no discernible tint, while it does its job of upping the sky contrast and intensifying the colors in the scene otherwise obscured by light reflections. Worth the doubling in price, from my point of view.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for Landscapes Durable, thin construction so the lens cap still can be attached and it can be used for wide angle lenses. General uses for landscape, skies, and water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Polarizer Filter Great for outdoor landscapes with a light sky or to shoot through glass and water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent polarization, strong build Superb polarization and strong build (fell off on the ground but nary a scratch).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have! Mounted this Hoya HD3 CP on the Sony 24-70mm f2/.8 GM lens attached to a A7Rll. For me, this filter was a must have. The quality is a perfect match for today's high resolution digital cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter Very good filter. Low loss through it. The only drawback is the threading is a bit tricky. Seems pretty easy to cross thread.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality Filter is very thin, threads well machined. Turns precisely, delivers beautiful blue skys and cuts glare perfectly on my 5D 24-70 f2.8. Expensive but works well on this excellent lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from correction I misstated the lens I use this filter for. It is the 77mm version. However, I do use this 82mm filter on my Canon 24-70mm F2.8L II lens, and have the same praise for it as I did with the other smaller filter.
