Vello RC-S2II overview

  • 1Description

The ShutterBoss II Timer Remote Switch for Sony Multi-Terminal from Vello is a remote shutter release that provides photographers with enhanced levels of exposure control. Featuring specialized functionality such as continuous shooting, self-timer, long time exposures, and interval shooting, the ShutterBoss II is a huge asset to keep in your camera bag. This particular ShutterBoss is compatible with cameras that have a Sony Multi-Terminal connection, for example: Sony Alpha a9, a7, a77 II, a3500, a6300, RX100 II/III/IV/V, and RX10 and RX100 series cameras.

With the ShutterBoss you can set timer delays, exposure times and intervals up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds in one-second increments. You can also select from 1 to 399 continuous shots or set the device to take an unlimited number of photos. Since you can set exposures without touching the camera you will capture clear, blur-free images. This remote has a 4-line backlit LCD status display for easy viewing of timer and exposure settings. The backlight can be locked to remain on when shooting in low light conditions.

The ShutterBoss is great for time lapse series of blooming flowers, sunsets or the night sky. It can also function without batteries as a simple manual remote shutter release. Simply establish the camera's settings and push the remote's shutter button halfway to focus and fully to shoot. In bulb mode, slide the shutter release button forward to lock and the shutter will stay open until you release it.

The ShutterBoss II has added two features that will offer easier control over the remote's settings. First is a Power Off option which gives you the ability to power down the remote to conserve battery life and also a Reset option allows the ShutterBoss' settings to be completely reset to default settings with just the hold of two buttons. A default reset is a time-saver to avoid changing each setting individually.

Whether it's for simple shutter release, extended self-timer options, continuous shooting, long exposures, or time-lapse shooting, the ShutterBoss II Remote puts creative camera control in the palm of your hand.

    Vello RC-S2II reviews

ShutterBoss II Timer Remote Switch for Sony Multi-Terminal is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 56.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Straightforward Intervalometer for Sony A7 series This is a much better option than using Sony's remote app for long exposure (over 30 seconds) for A7 series cameras. Also much easier to use than Sony's Timelapse app. Keeps your camera in the regular menu settings as opposed to the timelapse app settings. The only benefit of using Sony's app is that you can set the timelapse to do both stills and produce an .avi video file of the timelapse for a quick review. I'd recommend this intervalometer highly for a serious astrophotographer and long exposure enthusiast.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not work as adverstisefor Sony Auto-bracketing I have the Vello Shutterboss II and found that it does not work properly with my Sony A7II. They state that It can also be set to take multiple photos with a single press of the shutter. That is partially true. It will work as long as none of the exposure is longer than 1 second and not in wireless set up. Otherwise, it will drop that exposure. For example, the other day, I set up my camera for multiple exposures using Aperture priority and auto-bracketing for 3 exposures at plus and minus 1 EV apart. The Shutterboss II worked fine until one of the exposure was longer than 1 second. Then, it will shoot the ones shorter than 1 second and completely drop the one longer than 1 second. In wireless mode, it will not do multiple expsoures for Auto bracketing at all. Other than that, the trigger works fine.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Compatible With A7III As a Product in general the ShutterBoss II works well on my other cameras. I own three of them and use them with my Canon cameras. I purchased the RC-S211 to use with my new A7III. It would not fire the shutter unless I did a half-press on the camera body-Defeating the purpose of the remote. I spoke with Vello and was told that the ShutterBoss II has the wrong voltage for the A7III. They recommended The ShutterBoss III wireless as being compatible. So I am returning the unit to B&H for a refund. Not sure about purchasing the ShutterBoss III as it is twice the price. So great product but a fail on the A7III.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does not fully work with Sony A7 iii If you’re buying this item for a Sony A7 iii it only seems to work with the timer function. The shutter release does not work for me. I went to Vellos website and they don’t list the A7 iii as being compatible. Unfortunate because it’s a nice little unit. Very plastic and what it would consider lower quality buttons but the timer feature gets the job done. I really wanted to use the shutter button too. A lame work around would be to set the timer for one second and hit the start button instead of the shutter button but you’d always have a once second delay. Crazy that almost all of Sony’s camera line fully works except the A7 iii.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great add to my Bag Currently doing Milky Way captures but that 30 wall and in bulb mode to have to look at a watch and the light goes off or having to watch your phone app and the screen goes dark 35 sec in. There was no remote shutter for a Sony and using the SEL1018 @12mm well a 600 rule gives you 50 500 41 and 450 37. ShutterBoss is the BOSS that takes you beyond the 30 wall for Sony Camera's. Yes there is an in camera app but there are times to do it yourself. Like I learned my lens would shoot 60 with the SEL1018 with no coma or star trails at ISO 1600 on my A7s, I played for 2 hrs. capturing the MW at different setting without have to use the camera app. I am going to buy 2 more just to have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I love this item, once I finally figured out how to use it, I watched the Vello youtube how to video and it was really helpful. I am so happy I ordered it. I like that you can turn off the power because in the past I've had these that would never turn off but this one will. Its just a great item. If I have to say one negative thing about it, is that the light turns off so quickly so if your shooting in the dark, you have to either use a flashlight or just keep pushing the lightbulb button to keep the light on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Intervalometer for Sony The ShutterBoss II by Vello is arguably the best and most intuitive intervalometer available for most camera systems. I'm currently using these on both my Sony and Canon camera systems for long exposure landscape work and have found them to be sturdy and reliable devices with great battery life. The primary reason why I gravitated to the Vello remote rather than comparable 3rd party intervalometers is because these incorporate a power button - a seemingly obvious feature but one that most other manufactures ignore. Vello also produces a newer wireless model with a receiver that mounts to the hotshot slot, but because the Sony a6000 doesn't incorporate a viewfinder level I decided to go with the trusty corded version of this intervalometer and save my hotshot for a spirit level.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does not work with Sony A7iii As someone else stated this does not work with the Sony A7iii. The remote otherwise seems great and I'm sorry that I won't be able to use it and have to send it back. Also somebody mentioned that there is now way to power it off. If you read the manual it explains how to on about page 3. You just have to hold the power button down for 3 seconds. Five stars if it would have work on the a7iii.
