Sigma 20mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Truly wide and truly fast, the Nikon F mount 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a member of the venerable Art series of Global Vision lenses from Sigma and pairs a sophisticated optical design with a robust physical construction. Comprised of 15 elements in 11 groups, the lens design includes two "F" Low Dispersion (FLD) elements, five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements, and two aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as limit distortion for clean, sharp, and evenly illuminated imagery. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. The wide focal length and consistent image quality make this lens especially suitable for landscape, interior, architectural, and astrophotography applications, while the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture deems it ideal for natural and low-light shooting.

Complementing the optical performance is an equally adept Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance. This focusing motor also enables full-time manual focus override at any time just by rotating the focus ring for refined manual control and focusing as close as 10.9". The lens barrel is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite material, which supports working in a wide variety of temperatures and conditions, and the lens mount is constructed from brass for long-term durability and mounting accuracy. Additionally, this lens is also compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuned control over focusing parameters and other lens characteristics.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Prime wide-angle 20mm f/1.4 lens is designed for FX format Nikon F mount DSLRs, and can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 30mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two FLD, five SLD, and two aspherical elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
Fixed petal-shaped lens hood helps to reduce lens flare when working in strong lighting conditions and also offers some protection to the front element of the lens.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

    Sigma 20mm f/1.4 reviews

20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma lens I did a lot of research on this lens Sigma 20 mm f/4. And knew the pros and cons. When I opened the box it has a nice feel to it. It feels like it will take wear and tear of doing photography. Although it is a little on the heavy side it is not a big deal. I have used it and it is a very fast lens and I have fallen in love with it. I am so pleased that I purchased this lens and not others that are similar. I have used fir night photography of Christmas lights and just think it is one of the best lens I have used and own. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a fast lens and one that will last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No other wide angle like it. I shoot professionally and the uses for this lens for environmental portraiture, editorial, and general usage are better than any other lens of 20-21mm that I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of them. very sharp in the center at 1.4 and the edges come in at 2/8-4. Great lens.

Even at 1.4! - Zero Distortion! - Blazing Fast Auto-Focus! - Bokeh Heaven! - Built Like a Tank! And Beautifully Designed! - Inexpensive Compared to Zeiss when the optics are pretty much the same! Sigma has designed an incredible piece of glass! Buy this lens its well worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma Art has nothing but the best coming. I've been waiting for this lens to come out since its announcement a few months back. Once it released, I bought it as soon as the clock hit 12am. I primarily shoot primes with the exception of a 70-200. For the wide end of the spectrum, I used to own the Nikon 14mm 2.8 AFD which I sold. Although, the 20mm art isn't as wide, it is bloody gorgeous in separating the subject from the background. You buy the world's fastest ultra wide prime to shoot wide open, and when you do you get nothing but pure butter. I was expecting this lens to be quite soft in the center, but wide open this thing is sharp as a knife and gets even sharper when stopping down. Is there a bit of barrel distortion? Yes, but barely. It actually keeps lines ridiculously straight, but you can get that slight push pull effect if you shoot in a not so pleasing angle. But remember this IS an ultra wide, so just be mindful in how you shoot with it. Focus is dead on accurate and fast. Faster than my 14mm 2.8. Only thing to knit pick is the weight of this lens. Its quite heavy. probably as heavy as the 14-24 by nikon. It also has that same bulbous front element that can get serenely damaged if you don't baby this thing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast and sharp, but heavy I'd give this lens five stars for optical quality, no question. But it is a very heavy lens, and it's expensive, the only two downsides. Distortion is low, the lens is sharp wide open, and improves when stopping down to the point where it's very sharp corner to corner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4.5 STARS For Me I am a fine art pet portrait photographer and a landscape photographer. I love the beautiful bokeh this lens produces and I am amazed how fast this f/1.4 lens operates. This lens comes in a beautiful case (nicer than any Nikon or Canon lens case I have) thats well padded and secure with a zip closure. My only complaint is that it's a bit heavy, but with the quality and fast aperature it produces, the weight is wort the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lens I use with my Nikon D800E and works great, very fast focusing, awesome sharpness and beautiful bokeh, also have a really solid construction and great design, recommended for everybody, especially if have 30MP+ camera to unleash the true image quality of this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens, just heavy Love this lens, super sharp, 1.4 capability for low light is great, sometimes miss VR at low shutter speads and the weight can become a problem if you carry it for too long. But all in all a great lens.
