FUJIFILM XF 1.4x TC WR Teleconverter Reviews

Works perfectly

I originally arranged for a rental of the 70-300, unfortunately that didn't happen so I got this at the last minute. Very pleased using it with the 40-150 mm

No brainer accessory

If you already own a compatible Fuji X-series tele zoom lens (mine's the 50-140 f2.8), then you should definitely purchase their 1.4x teleconverter, which extends your lenses reach. It takes up practically no space in a camera bag, and the optical quality is remarkable. Just get one; you'll thank me.

Worth it for Wildlife

Purchased for a recent trip to Alaska, where there was plenty of opportunity for photographing wildlife, especially marine mammals (whales, otters, sealions). I have the XF50-140mm f2.8 lens; note that this teleconverter is currently only compatible with this and three other Fuji lenses, so take care before purchasing! It's a teleconverter, so there's not much to say about use... there are no adjustments or settings, just attach and start shooting. The zoom range of my lens changes from 70mm to 196mm, and the effective change in aperture is shown in the viewfinder, e.g. if you have f8 selected on the lens, f11 appears in the viewfinder. There are front and rear caps, and a soft drawstring bag for storage. I'm happy with the end results. The XF50-140mm lens has stellar image quality, so you really just want an accessory lens like this to stay out of the way and be as transparent as possible. Without pixel-peeping (ugh!) I think the XF1.4x TC WR delivers. Why not five stars? IMO this accessory is very expensive, and offers marginal value for money.

Not too sharp

I received my 1.4 Tele and coupled it to my 70-300 and XH-1 and checked it out. Yes the zoom factor increased but when pixel peeping I did not care for the resolution, not as sharp. I got better results zooming in with only my 70-300 than with my 70-300 and 1.4 teleconverter. I am returning it.

Great device.

Used this weekend at Donner Lake in Truckee, CA. No loss in sharpness. Since I was shooting mostly static images can't comment on speed of auto focus. Makes the 70-300 equivalent to a roughly 100-400 at considerable less weight and no noticeable loss of sharpness or IQ.

Release knob is defective

I've used this lens for about 4 years on numerous lenses. The image quality is very good. My negative comment is that the release knob is poorly designed and subject to breakage. Then when you break this part (probably costs about $.25) that Fujifilm designed poorly, they tell you that a swap is the only thing that they will do and they charge about $360 plus tax plus freight for the swap. They give you a used lens, probably in good condition, and give you a 6 month warranty. When you try to get it repaired elsewhere the other repairers tell you that Fuji won't sell them the part. I like most things about Fuji and have lots of their equipment, but this was a disturbing encounter. I'm going to buy a new one with a one year's warranty for just slightly more than the cost of the swap.

An Amazing Piece of Kit

I use this to extend my wildlife/birding lens. It is amazing as I cannot see any image resolution deterioration or distortion. I literally forget I have it coupled to the lens. It may not bring you the magnification of the XF 2x TC but you can crop images taken with this on your tele (mine is a XF 70mm-300) with confidence you will have great detail and image quality.

Image Quality Still Holds Up!

I was trying to choose between a 1.4x TC and a 2x TC for my 50-140 f/2.8 Fuji zoom. After reviewing user feedback on Fuji user forums, I chose the 1.4. It gives me an effective range of 105mm - 294mm with just 1 stop less light, not an issue for landscape work. And I keep the weatherproofing of my original lens and get all adjusted exposure information on the camera when the TC is installed. A good cost compromise over buying a new zoom lens with comparable specs.

Sorry the 1.4 TC WR is only compatible with the 50-140, 100-200, and the 80mm. The rear element of the lens needs to be specially designed to handle the extended front element of the converter.
