Allen & Heath ZEDI-8 Overview

Designed to bring the signature Allen & Heath sensibility to a compact and portable frame, the ZEDi-8 is a four-channel mixer that doubles as a USB interface. On the mixer side, you get two XLR inputs, two line/instrument inputs, and two pairs of stereo line inputs. Utilize this unit's digital capabilities and you'll find yourself with two channels of conversion—analog-to-digital or vice-versa. Thus, you'll find the ZEDi-8 equally suited for live-mixing in small venues and for tracking instruments on the fly.

Should you choose use the unit as an interface, you'll find that it comes with Cubase LE, a digital audio workstation which enables you to record, sequence, and edit music, be it audio or MIDI.

In the analog realm, the ZEDi-8 is crafted with preamps modeled on the Allen & Heath GS2-R24. These channel strips aim to provide warmth, low noise, and a vast expanse of headroom. On-board EQs also come standard with the unit. Two channels feature a button that converts line-level signal into high-impedance jacks, meaning guitar players need not lug an extra DI box around should they wish to go direct into the board.

Turning your attention back to the digital side of things, you'll notice that a USB switch controls the routing of your USB output, enabling you to select how you route and separate the incoming analog signals into your DAW.

Allen & Heath ZEDI-8 Reviews

Perfect for In-Person and Hybrid Meetings via Zoom/WebEx

This mixer is the perfect device to use for producing an in-person and hybrid meeting. The local PA speaker will plug into the XLR outputs while you use the USB interface for the audio to and from the computer running Zoom/WebEx. Two microphones can be plugged in and the mixer can provide phantom power if needed. The USB volume control on the mixer controls if the remote Zoom/WebEx participants are heard locally in the room or they are muted for the room. There is a single selector switch (M1/M2) that provides the mix minus setup to send only the microphone audio to the Zoom/WebEx participants to eliminate feedback. If any audio device is plugged into ST1 or ST2, the Zoom/WebEx participants won't hear it. Any other audio for presentations, needs to be produced directly on the Zoom/WebEx for everybody to hear.

Awesome computer interface

Bought this as an interface for SMAART and to do recordings with. For it's price this is the best audio interface in the sub $ range. A bit larger than other offerings, but it also has more features. I wish the plastic rim could be removed to make it a little smaller, but that's my only complaint.

Can the headphone jack on this model be used to send a mono output to a powered monitor?
Asked by: Marc
The Allen & Heath ZEDi-8 Compact Hybrid Mixer/USB Interface's headphone output could be connected to a powered speaker, but headphone outputs do not have the same impedance as true line outputs, and you may experience a degraded/weak signal when compared to a line output.

question

dose it have pad ? to Attenuate the signal ?
Asked by: Behnam B.
The Zedi 8 does not have any pad switches for the input level, but the model up, the Zedi 10 (B&H # ALZEDI10), does have Line/Pad switches on channels 3 and 4 which attenuate the input level by 20 dB.

question

will this interface work with Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro?
Asked by: Anonymous
Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro can both be used with external USB Audio Interfaces. The ZEDi-8 would be compatible as well.

question

does it have pad ? to Attenuate the signal
Asked by: Behnam B.
No, there is no dedicated pad switch on this mixer. However, Allen & Heath's GSPre preamp stage has a wide dynamic range of 5 to 60 dB and this provides exceptionally low noise and enough headroom to accommodate a wide range of signals. The mixer also features guitar DI high-impedance jack inputs allowing guitars to be plugged straight to the mixer without the need for separate DI boxes. A low-cut filter is also provided to clean-up unwanted low-frequency noise.

question

Is the USB I/O full duplex? For example, can you play back a set of tracks from ProTools and overdub 2 more tracks onto the session using this mixer as the USB interface? I could not get Pro Tools to recognize my old ZED10FX USB inputs and outputs at the same time.
Asked by: George
It should work but there may be an issue with your settings in Pro Tools or on your console. Please contact Richard S. in Allen & Heath Tech Support at 1-800-431-2609, or at cases@americanmusicandsound.fogbugz.com. Thank you.
