    Nikon MB-D17 reviews

MB-D17 Multi Power Battery Pack for D500 is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 142.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Quailty & Works with AA, EN-EL15 and the EN-EL18a Exceptional Nikon quality and reliability. You can use AA, EN-EL15 V2.0 and with the optional Nikon BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover you can use the BIG Nikon EN-EL18a battery. The BL-5 Battery Chamber Cover also works with the D810's MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack, you get the best of both worlds. With the EN-EL18a battery I shot 1520 photos and still had 56% battery life left, shooting both RAW and JPEG with Bluetooth connected to my HTC 10 Android phone using Nikon Snapbridge. With this amount of power it allows me to shoot a show and not have to worry about losing power. The EN-EL15a battery never got used.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well built, works well, but expensive As the other Nikon battery packs, this one is well built and its joystick works flawlessly, which has never been the case with third party offerings for other cameras. The grip appears to be compatible with both en-el15 and en-el18 batteries, genuine or not (interesting, because the D500 only works with a genuine en-el15 battery). EOM en-el18 batteries which could not be used reliably in a MB-D12 grip (D800/D810) have worked flawlessly in this grip during a few hours preliminary test. I limit my rating to 4 stars due to the cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good item Always nice to have the extra battery in these high use bodies. The new selector option is more tactile and easy to use. Down side, like the same grip on my D7100, is that to charge the 2nd battery you have to remove the entire grip to access it. I preferred the old style where both batteries fit in the grip and you could remove, replace and charge them without taking the grip off. That said, despite the ergonomic frustrations, it is a 'must have' if you have a D500, IMO.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid, but too expensive Had a third-party grip for my previous camera (D90), and while fully functional (still, after 5+ years), this Nikon grip is noticeably higher quality. Just has a whole different feel to it. That said, I would have NEVER bought this for what they're asking (got it for free with the D500 as part of the end-of-the-year deals in 2016). If I had to pay for a grip, I would *definitely* go for third-party again. Sorry Nikon! Another minus - grip fits only a single LiIon battery pack. The third-party D90 grip fit two of them. Not sure there's less space here because of the added controls (joystick), but seems like an unnecessary design limitation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Accessory This battery grip is a nice addition to the D500. It's added weight allows for better balance when using the longer lenses. Importantly it also enables one to use the EN-EL18a battery when using the BI-5 battery chamber cover which greatly extends battery life. It also makes going to portrait orientation easier and the dials and shutter release are very solid. Off one star due to high relative cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for extra battery life and vertical portraiture Use the MB-D17 mostly for when I am going to be shooting mainly portraits, vertical images. Or if I don't want to worry about running out of battery, this will double the D500 camera power life. Very sturdy, solid feeling, gives the D500 that extra heft that makes it feel more solid. Although that is the only downfall, it does add some weight to the camera so you might not want to use this if you want to travel light. The only way this could be better would be if somehow nikon could incorporate it to include the on/off switch as well as the ISO button. I frequently am reaching for a non-existent button when I am using it vertically.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it! I normally use a battery pack on all my Nikon camera/s. This one is totally different. I used to own the Nikon D4s and I feel similar handling comfort of the D500 with this battery pack attached. Its ergonomics has changed dramatically. I thought I won't need one because the D500 size and grip is pretty good. My hands aren't large but having this battery pack added comfort (handling wise) and totally worth it for my use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Product, Inflated Price It is possible that third party battery grips work well enough as to have appeal for most photographers. However, I have always preferred to use OEM versions of these things under the assumption that the manufacturer of the camera knows the camera best. That said, I bit the proverbial bullet and oped for the MB-D17 for the newest addition to my camera family, the D500. The build is solid. The fit is all but perfect. And for a camera that tends to draw heavily on battery power (particularly when using SnapBridge), the extra battery in a grip that provides additional controls is definitely useful. Quite frankly, the only drawback I can offer is the price.
