Nikon KeyMission 360 Overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon KeyMission 360 is a dual-lens action camera that simultaneously captures two 180°+ UHD 4K images and automatically stitches them into a single 360° video. This single image can then be viewed with optional VR goggles or on 360 platforms, such as YouTube 360, where you can move around the image in all directions. You can also upload the stitched image into various VR editing software and enhance it before viewing it on goggles or 360 platforms.

The camera is capable of recording Ultra HD 4K resolution at 24 fps, Full HD 1080p video at 24 fps, 1440 x 960 video at 25/30 fps, and 29MP still images. In all shooting modes, both lenses automatically work at the same time. Each lens features 7 lens elements in 7 groups and offers approximately a 12" focusing distance. Like the rest of the KeyMission series, the KeyMission 360 uses glass Nikon Nikkor lenses, representing Nikon's commitment to this lineup.

The KeyMission 360 features a rugged design and is built to withstand the elements: Without any additional housing, it is waterproof down to 100 ft, shockproof from 6.6 ft, freezeproof, and dustproof. Aside from added convenience, not requiring a housing allows for cleaner image and audio capture, as no additional layers are required between the lenses and mic and your subject.

The KeyMission 360 also features internal electronic Vibration Reduction (for 1080p capture) that will reduce the effects of shakes and jitters in your outdoor adventures, providing you with a smoother final image. A free-to-download Nikon control and playback app is also included with the camera that's compatible with both iOS and Android mobile devices.

The KeyMission 360 comes with a varied set of accessories, including a cage-like Silicone Jacket, lens protector to prevent scratches, and underwater lens protector that will allow you to achieve better focus underwater. Additionally, it supports many more optional KeyMission accessories for riding, watersports, and everyday outdoor activities.

Nikon KeyMission 360 Reviews

KeyMission 360 4K Action Camera is rated 2.4 out of 5 by 84.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nope Bottom line: I ended up returning and getting a Samsung Gear 360 paired with a used Galaxy s7 Edge. What a difference. The KeyMission app is total junk, unusable. It would take several long minutes and multiple steps to even connect, no live preview when shooting video, and it would loose a connection and would need to start the connection process all over again if the phone was moved more than 5 feet from the camera. Comparing the footage shot from the KeyMission to the Samsung Gear 360, the Samsung wins hands down. I wish Nikon would re-work the app and improve the footage, weather sealing is the only advantage this has over the Samsung.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is a beta and you are the tester. Worst peice of gear, and I'm not even sure why they sell it. Looks like a solid build but the software and kills it. This product is tied to a terrible smartphone app that does not work. I have tried with to sync this camera via bt+Wifi on 3 devices. Everyone on the internet says the same. There is a big gap in the stitching and is very noticeable. 4K is very soft, so it's probably stretched 1080p Such a disappointment from a leading camera company. I feel like this was a pet project for someone at Nikon. They can market this product but can't finish testing it. I want Nikon to refund my shipping fees to send it back. I almost never return gear but this product has no hope. If you don't believe me buy one. Nikon owes me an apology and the rest of customers that got sucked into the marketing scheme.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love This! Ive never owned a GoPro. Ive always waited till something great came out. When I saw this I immediately had to have it. Im a D5 owner who shoots AHL Hockey, Pro Sports, and Concerts. Im stoked to capture my world on this! Thanks Nikon. Issues: Connecting to Iphone. Didnt work. Even store had issues when playing with multiple 360 and phones. Charging: I want to be able to charge the battery in the charger. Not hook the charger to the wall and have a cable run to the camera for charging (Biggest Bummer).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hope Nikon can fix the stitching Software is annoying, takes lots of steps to start using it. Most important, you can clearly see where both cameras stitch! This ain't happened in other cameras (even cheaper ones) The image quality is superb, looks really nice in both photo or video but the stitching really kills that beauty. It's not small, you cant use it in your pocket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bad Software So far, the photos I've taken was good enough for me to like the camera however I think it should give me better results. 1- The software is very bad and confusing and they should update it ASAP. 2- They did not provide an SD card with in the box so I had to buy one later. 3- It took me ages to pair the device in WIFI.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Software is not ready The image is ok and the build quality looks solid but the software is not ready, wonder how it ever passes any quality control. Found these problems just after a few hours use, 1. Very hard to pair. Tried 3 devices, only 1 worked. 2. The remote photography stopped working after a few minutes of use. I can still see the live view but record button does nothing. 3. Take long time to connect wifi to take pictures. It should add another mode so it can take pictures with bluetooth without live view.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The KeyMission 360 4K Action Camera has promise an no punch. The KeyMission 360 4K Action Camera has promise an no punch. The Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection are impossible. The stitching is very noticeable. The 29 megapixel picture quality is good, not great. It is big and clumsy. It needs a protective case. The Ricoh Theta S (I have both) is easy, connects great, easy setup, the 14 megapixel picture quality is good and has a neoprene sleeve. I haven't been able to test the video (that's what I bought it for) because software hasn't worked. Nikons tech support is not proficient with this product and was reading the manual, and could not figure it out. Nikon released this to soon. To many bugs, Nikon staff uninformed. I am hoping Ricoh will have a larger megapixel 360 soon. I would not buy the KeyMission 360 4K Action Camera again or recommend it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Purchase I have been waiting for this sense they announced it at CES. Pre-ordered it, got it all excited and was completely disappointed. The stitching is worse then LG. It's foggy and cricked. Their is no way the quality is what it says it is. Maybe if this camera was $250 it would be worth it. The IOS app is terrible and a pain. You have to connect Bluetooth then wifi. Don't leave the camera preview page to preview the picture or else you have to pair it again to wifi. Returned it! What a waste from Nikon, Go pro doesn't have to worry about this one!

question

Is there any option for livestreaming via App to YT//Facebook?
Asked by: Anonymous
Currently there are no live streaming options for this 360 degree cameras. For 360 Live Streaming to Youtube you would need to look in to the Teradek Sphere Real-Time 360-Degree Monitoring and Live Streaming System (B&H #TESPHERE) which works with GoPros. You could also look at the soon to be released Orah 4i Live Spherical VR Camera (B&H #OR4IVR).

You can mount this to face up and down. However, we are not sure about your questions regarding a dome.

question

Can you do live broadcasts with the Nikon Keymission 360 onto YouTube Live and other CDNs? Will this work with Telestream Wirecast?
Asked by: Anonymous
At this time we are unable to answer definitively since Nikon has yet to release more details. It is our opinion that the point of these 360 cameras is to share the experience and therefore we expect a great deal of compatibility with sharing services.

question

How do we take ourselves out of the shot? Will it take less than 360 degrees to achieve that?
Asked by: Michelle C.
This is a 360 degree camera so getting out of the shot is a challenge. We would think the blind spots would be at on the top and bottom. In other words, the plane that is in view is what is in front and back, not up and down. Supporting the camera on a pole over your head most likely with do the trick.
