Would these be good for protecting a super telephoto in a regular backpack rather than a camera bag?
The Ruggard 19 x 19" Padded Equipment Wrap (Red) (B&H# RUGW19R) (in all colors and sizes) is great for protecting any lens that fits in the size you've chosen in any bag -- even one not designed to carry photographic equipment. It features hook-and-loop (A.K.A. "touch") fasteners to hold the wrap in place. For that reason, it would ideally be stored in a bag in a way that will prevent it from moving or rolling around whereby the union between the material that is made possible by the fasteners would be stressed excessively, albeit a very unlikely occurance in typical situations. As such, ideally, regardless of the type of bag, the stored lens would be positioned in the bag in a way that would prevent excessive movement within the bag when the bag is moved or worn (say, in the case of a backpack or sling/waist bag).
