It includes a Sennheiser MKH 50 microphone, a Rycote Super-Softie Windshield for Shotgun Mics, and a Rycote InVision INV-HG mkIII microphone suspension with Lyre shockmount.

The microphone provides a wide frequency response and high sensitivity that result in pristine audio. Finally, the suspension minimizes handling noise, rumble, and vibration in all speech-capturing applications.

Sennheiser MKH 50 P48 Microphone

The MKH 50 P48 Microphone from Sennheiser is a high quality, professional condenser microphone specifically designed for spot capturing in recording and sound reinforcement applications. The MKH 50 offers exceptional attenuation at the lateral sections of the capsule, for a focused pick up without off-axis noise. Its wide frequency response and high sensitivity result in pristine audio fidelity, no matter the source. It also has a low-frequency roll-off switch to minimize rumble/noise, and a pre-attenuation switch in case you'll mount the microphone near to high transients. The MKH 50 requires +48V phantom power, and is more than suitable for capturing vocals or instruments.

A pressure-gradient condenser mic specifically created for spot recording
Supercardioid polar pattern to provide focused capture and extreme off-axis rejection
Low-frequency roll-off switch to minimize rumble and noise
Switchable pre-attenuation provides an additional 10 dB of headroom to prevent distortion from close-proximity transient signals
Uses +48V phantom power

Rycote Super-Softie Windshield for Shotgun Mics (5cm, 24/25)

The Rycote Super-Softie Windshield (5cm, 24/25) features 3D-Tex material and open-cell foam. It is suitable for shotgun microphones with slots no further than 5cm from the front of the mic, and a diameter of 24 to 25mm. The 3D-Tex material provides increased wind attenuation compared to conventional slip-on designs. It also achieves improved attenuation in extreme low frequencies and infrasonic frequencies, protecting captured audio where wind noise is at its greatest. The Super-Softie can be quickly squeezed and shaken dry when rain-soaked, or rinsed when dust-coated, without affecting its performance. This robust design will sustain its performance for years of use in challenging environments, such as news-gathering events.

  • Novel shape and 3D-Tex give greatly improved wind noise reduction compared to conventional "soft" windshields
  • A true cavity design, with superb performance at extreme low frequencies (where wind noise is worst)
  • A rough-service windshield, robust enough for the most challenging news-gathering situations
  • High immunity to rain-soaking, maintaining excellent acoustic transparency in almost all situations
  • Compatible with the following microphones: Beyerdynamic MCE 72; Sennheiser MKH 20/30/40/50
Rycote InVision INV-HG mkIII Microphone Suspension - Lyre Shockmount

The Rycote InVision INV-HG mkIII Microphone Suspension addresses the demand for a heavy-duty shockmount to secure shotgun microphones. The INV-HG mkIII will minimalize handling noise, rumble, and vibration in all speech-capturing applications.

The InVision Lyre cradle accommodates most microphones measuring 19 to 34mm in diameter, like the Sennheiser MKH416 or MKH60. The cradle stabilizes even heavy microphones and allows the use of windscreens without sagging. A heavy duty swivel with a star knob fastens your mic tightly in place. The Lyre cradle rests on a miniature bar with a 3/8" threaded base and includes a 5/8" adapter.

The INV-HG mkIII base features an integrated cable clamp for securing excess cable and minimizing noise. The unique Lyre suspension and cable clamp are engineered with Hytrel for a virtually indestructible design that maximizes shock and noise absorbtion.

Large Lyre Suspension for Boom Operation
The Patented Rycote Lyre suspension cradle measures 70mm high and 40mm wide to accommodate heavier microphones. This is ideal for static stand mounting as well as boom placement.
19 to 34mm Mounting Cradle
The cradle included with this system accommodates microphone diameters measuring between 19 to 34mm. The interior is treated with a soft-grip surface for a perfect, non-slip fitting.
Hytrel Construction
The unique Lyre suspension is engineered with Hytrel for a virtually indestructible design that maximizes shock and noise absorbtion.
Integrated 3/8" Threaded Base with 5/8" Stand Adapter
A 3/8" threaded base and a 5/8" threaded stand adapter is featured at the base for microphone boom pole and stand mounting.

Best indoor mic for dialog!

Perfect indoor shotgun mic

Indoor vocals sound fantastic with this mic. Great tone, very natural, hardly needs any EQ'ing or other effects in post. I used the MKH416 before this, and it was also great, but this mic is less general purpose and tuned more for indoor rooms and spaces. Similar sound and quality to the 416, but to my ears less (unwanted) room tone, echo, and slightly richer sound. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Very happy with this mic

I already own a Schoeps CMIT5 and 2x Senn MKH 416 and was excited to try something designed more towards indoor recordings. I've recently started doing a lot of talking head interviews in offices with noisy HVAC systems and ambient noise ranging from sirens to chatty office workers. The MKH 50 has out performed my current arsenal for indoor use. Some specific PROS: Really captures the low end frequencies which my client(s) love. I can use one boom on multiple people if they are seated reasonably close together. Some specific CONS: Really captures the low end frequencies which I love less than my client(s). I've needed to tape over the roll off switch when booming near air vents as it was causing rumble from the breeze getting in there. People say it's good for voice over, but I have not had any luck with that... it's incredibly sensitive when you are right up on it and I think that inhibits the performance of both the mic and the artist. Overall, I am extremely please with this addition to my kit and plan on getting a second one in the future. Highly recommend for anyone who already has a shotgun in their kit but would not recommend it as the first mic you buy if you are starting out.

Best shotgun mic for indoor usage

I skipped this microphone for a long time because of its high price, but its a much better choice than the mythical 416 or newer 8060 for indoor usage, while it has a very accurate capture of the audio, specially the voices, its very detail and I personally can't hear any reverbs that i could on a 416 for indoor usage. The price its biggest drawback, but for its worth its price.

Juicy Indoor Vocals

This thing captures so much juicy tonality in voices, it's breathtaking. I only had enough in my budget for one microphone which I would use mostly indoors but occasionally outdoors. The 416 was a contender but ultimately decided on the MKH 50. Most of my use is indoors in untreated rooms. Interviews, narration etc. This thing leaves my clients impressed. I thought the 416 would give me more versatility but so far I have not been let down with the quality of the MKH 50. You'll definitely need wind protection outdoors and put a little tape on the built-in filter switches. Now to save for a second one!

I absolutely love this microphone. It's perfect for out of frame placement while still being crystal clear. As with any Sennheiser product it's built really solid and the sound is crystal clear. 5/5

What a great sounding mic! This mic makes post-production clean-up/mixing so much easier. I'd highly recommend picking it up if you need something with a flat frequency response for interviews or foley work!

How does this compare with the 8060 for use as an on-camera mic?
Asked by: Paul
The Sennheiser MKH 50 P48 Microphone and the Sennheiser MKH 8060 Short Shotgun Microphone are both very good mics. The MKH 8060 has frequency response range of 50 Hz to 25 kHz and a maximum sound pressure level rating of 149 dB while the MKH 50 has a frequency response range of 40 Hz to 20 kHz and maximum SPL rating of 134 dB. The MKH 50 has a built-in -10 dB pad which allows for more headroom while increasing the maximum SPL rating to 142 dB, and it also has a low frequency roll-off switch to minimize rumble and noise. The MKH 8060 has no switches or controls. The equivalent noise level is similar for both mics, at 11 dB (A-weighted) for the MKH 8060 and 12 dB (A weighted) for the MKH 50. The MKH 50 is a shorter mic at 0.98 x 5.91" while the MKH 8060 measures 0.75 x 7.01". The MKH 50 has a supercardioid pickup pattern while the MKH 8060 has supercardioid pattern at low to midrange frequencies and transitions to lobar in higher frequencies. The MKH 50 is designed for use as a spot mic, usually mounted on a boom for overhead applications to focus on one person to record dialog. It is often used for studio applications. The MKH 8060 is better suited for mounting on a camera and it can be used for a wider range of applications such as films, documentaries, and outdoor shooting. The MKH 8060 is also moisture-resistant.
