Pentax 15-30mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A specialized, ultra-wide angle zoom, the HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Lens from Pentax offers full-frame shooters an excellent f/2.8 constant aperture to allow for exceptional control over depth of field and the ability to work in low-light conditions. It uses ED glass elements to reduce aberrations and features an HD multi-layer coating to limit flare and ghosting. Operation is fast, with a Supersonic Direct-Drive Motor (SDM) for autofocus and it has a Quick-Shift focus system for switching between auto and manual focusing. And, it can focus down to 11" for convenience.

Ensuring optimal performance on Pentax DSLRs, the lens is fully dust- and weather-resistant with eight seals to protect from intrusion. This is assisted by the use of a Super Protect coating on the bulbous front element as well as an integrated lens hood for minimal damage in case of an accident. Additionally, it has a 9-bladed rounded diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus elements.

Covering ultra-wide to wide-angle perspectives, this 15-30mm zoom offers a unique option for full-frame K-mount Pentax DSLRs and is also compatible with APS-C models, where it will provide a 23-46mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture maintains consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to greater selective focus control.
ED glass elements are featured in the lens design and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
The High Definition (HD) multi-layer coating is utilized to reduce reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color in more trying lighting conditions.
Super Protect coating and integrated lens hood help keep the optics safe in the event of accidental impact or when it comes in contact with water or dust.
Supersonic Direct-Drive Motor (SDM) ensures fast, quiet, and smoother autofocus operation.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing shallow depth of field techniques. It is completely rounded between f/2.8-4 when at 15mm and between f/2.8-5.6 when at 30mm.
A weather-resistant design features eight seals which better permit working in inclement conditions.

Pentax 15-30mm f/2.8 reviews

HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Performing Lens I was very nervous about buying this since it is a Tamron rebadge (though built to Pentax specs). After talking to fellow photographers that have used the Nikon version, I was willing to take a chance. Very impressed so far. Tack sharp at 3.5 (and really very passable at 2.8) with minimal barreling. This may be less effective on an APS body but I bought this to go along with the k1 and it is a great combo. My only complaint is they cheaped out on the lens cap. Since you cannot put any filters on the front element, I have been keeping the cap on till I am absolutely ready to shoot. They could have made a sturdier one (and possibly lined, like the ltd lenses). Beyond that, it is a tremendous lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It lives up to its reputation, it's good . . . With Pentax producing an excellent full-frame body the K1 the 15 - 30 becomes a very useful lens to work with. Well-made and with a lot of elements (18 in total) in 13-groups using some lens design (three aspherical optical elements) and material (extra-low dispersion glass) to make the lens work well. When you open the box you might do the same double take on the size and the first lift is what you get when you are holding a two-pound-four-ounce of well-made gear. Easy to get use too, it has a nice feel, and the 2.8 with the camera film speed rating allows control to achieve what you want. It is fun but it's defiantly not a toy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big, sharp Ultra wide Zoom I have only had this lens for a week but so far it is a outstanding performer. It is sharp as well as fast and accurate focusing. I am using it on a K-3II because I am still waiting for B&H to ship my K-1 :) The only negatives are the weight and the difficulty of using filters. Apparently there are some special filter holders from NiSi and Haida which will fit this lens but I have not had time to check them out. In a way the price is also a negative but I think most of us forget about that once we start using and loving the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for Pentax K1 owners. Gotta love this lens. I hesitated for quite a while as I fretted over not being able to use a filter (in the conventional sense). The user feedback regarding the hardiness of the coatings, and the fact that my DA 10-17 fisheye is still doing well convinced me to go ahead. This lens gives me the missing ultra-wide option for my K1. The image quality is excellent, and I like the f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. Yeah, it's a massive hunk of glass and metal, but well worth it. Besides, it's proving to be pretty good for building upper body strength.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine ultra-wide zoom for my Pentax K-1 Use has been limited so far, but the image quality is great and so good that I've retired my Zeiss ZK 28/2 Distagon. I use a Fotodiox WonderPana66 filter system (specified for the Tamron 15-30/2.8) on it and that too works very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast focus and no soft edges Image quality is great and haven't had any problems focusing in low light. I've taken a few hundred shots so far and haven't noticed any chromatic aberration. I do wish it used a screw-on filter but the coating on it seems to be like teflon. It barely attracts any dust, but when it does, a hand blower makes it look like new. I haven't had to use a cloth yet except when shooting in the rain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST ULTRA-WIDE ZOOM LENS BY FAR !! This lens is definitely pricey and heavy but well worth it!! I've owned Canon ultra-wide zoom L lenses but this beat them all. F/2.8 across the whole range is a plus! Images are terrific !! Built-in lens hood ! The one downside is a filter can not be used! Overall the best Ultra-wide zoom lens out there!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just brilliant.... Upgraded from APS-C to FF and left my 10-17mm fisheye behind .. .this isn't quite as wide but more than makes up for it in all other areas. It's a true wide angle that allows you to get up close and personal with your subject whilst maintaining contact with the rest of the scene. Distortion and Chromatic aberration are pretty much non existent. Couldn't be happier.
