question
Who makes this lens?
It is manufactured by Tamron to Pentax's standards, including Pentax's lens coating. It is a stellar performer. I was a bit nervous about buying it knowing it was a rebadge but it is a tremendous lens.

Would you recommend this lens for portraits?
Would you recommend this lens for portraits?
Definitely not. This is a wide angle lens, and a fine one. It is intended for landscapes and architecture. For portraits you want a moderate telephoto, about 70 to 100 mm.

question
Is there a filter holder/system for this?
Yes the Lee Filter SW150 Mark II work perfectly. For this incredible sharp lens, finding a polarized filter was a must for me, Lee filter is the solution, expensive yes, but it work beautifully. For any Pentax lover, go for it, the lens will give you all you expect from it!

question
Is this lens ideal for astrophotography?
It is a nice one for it. It depends on what you are trying to capture. I used it this summer to catch a small portion of the tree line along with the sky. I also used the D FA*70-200 to capture a different perspective. I use this lens primarily for architecture and real estate. It will do nicely if your main need is for astrophotography.. The real key to star and sky shots is the astro tracer function in the k3 and k1, though (I shoot with the k1). You will absolutely love this lens.
