The 88" White with Removable Black/Silver ParaSail Parabolic Umbrella from Angler has a wing-like, rounded rectangular shape that makes it a unique addition to the light-shapers available to spark and give voice to the photographer's creative expression. Especially useful in home studios, tight spaces or rooms with low ceilings, the ParaSail can be used horizontally for a wrap-around quality of light with maximum space-saving. Used vertically, the modifier has an initial wrap-around look with a dramatic fall-off, especially when feathered, that facilitates creation of lighting ratios. The versatile ParaSail also offers contrast alternatives; the black/silver backing adds punch and crispness to the output and is slightly softened by the white interior. Take off the black/silver backing for a soft neutral look.

Besides novel functioning, the ParaSail is also structurally sound - its fiberglass ribs create a uniform surface for maximum reflectance and the 8mm solid aluminum shaft provides strong support and holds flexing to a minimum. Unique, versatile and sturdy construction backed with numerous light quality options make the ParaSail a creative and practical choice for the savvy photographer.

Unique Shape

The true parabolic shape has a wing-like rounded rectangular appearance that is useful for home studios, rooms with low-ceilings or space-challenged situations, especially when used in the horizontal mode. The large reflective surface offers maximum coverage with an impressive degree of directional control.

Use Vertically or Horizontally

Used vertically the ParaSail offers an initial wrap around quality followed by a dramatic fall-off especially when feathered - useful for creating light ratios. Used horizontally, the ParaSail provides maximum wrap-around light coverage.

Fiberglass Ribs and Rods

Fiberglass ribs and rods offer greater flexibility and resist the tendency to bend like aluminum ribbed umbrellas. The ribs create a more uniform shape for greater reflectance.

White Interior with Removable Silver

White interior with removable black/silver backing provides a dual purpose to this modifier. When used with the black/silver backing the ParaSail offers a slightly punchy quality with maximum output, while the white fabric softens the contrast. Used alone without the silver backing, the white interior produces a soft, neutral effect.

The size of this umbrella makes it perfect for full body studio work and I used this to great success to light an outdoor studio shoot. Client was happy and so was I, especially since it's super easy to transport.

I LIKE IT and it switches from horizontal to vertical with just a twist.

Very Convenient

I saw a video of a photographer using this and I thought this would be convenient for on location photography to shoot with one umbrella instead of two. The 60 Angler umbrella turned out fantastic for lighting subjects and groups, and I now use my second light for gels or as a backlight. I bought the 60 so that it should be big enough for groups. It is definitely easier to manage than two lights especially if you are doing portraits at a wedding or a similar event where you need to take many different single and group portraits and you constantly need to change the power and position of two lights, this umbrella comes to the rescue. The light quality is fantastic. The materials are very good, as good as any umbrella. The rod and ribs are just a sturdy as the Prophoto umbrella I once owned and just as good as the excellent quality Interfit and Impact deep umbrellas I used till now. I'm not sure about the sturdiness of the 88 Angler umbrella, but the 60 is very sturdy. The nature of umbrellas, because of the way they are made, is that they will break if blown over outdoors in the wind, it doesn't matter the brand, this is what is likely to happen if it falls over. I took off one star because I hate umbrellas that can be detached as it's annoying when the tips detach and I need to reattach it. Other than this one annoying issue, I'm very happy with the umbrella.

I took my new unit to an offsite shoot. It produced studio quality light without breaking my wrist and back. I liked it.

A great idea, but with some limitations

I'm usually working under a low ceiling, and this umbrella lets me use a wider umbrella under that limitation. A couple of things you should know, though: First, it's heavier than a smaller umbrella so you need to make sure the mount you're using to attach this to your stand is sturdy enough and that your stand is weighted down with a sandbag at the bottom to keep the whole assemblage from toppling. Since the umbrella is asymmetrical it wants to rotate unless you have it tightened sufficiently in the mount. Finally, the sleeve/bag that comes with it is poorly stitched together, -the pointed end of the folded umbrella poked through the bottom the second time I tried to use it. I managed to fix it by stitching it back together by hand, but if you're handy with a sewing machine you might want to turn it inside out and reinforce all the seams. Otherwise the bag will never last.

Great lighting, but not very sturdy.

I really love this diffuser, but the umbrella rod broke on me while on an outdoor shoot while lying on the ground about 5 months after purchasing it. Because I had to bend the rod back to close it so it would fit in my car, the warranty was voided. Thankfully B&H did what they could to make it right, even though that wasn't their job, and I'm so grateful! But, buy knowing it needs to be treated gently. I love the light diffusion, but I probably won't buy another.

Best lighting tool ever.

Great for portability, wrap around lighting on high key backgrounds, reduces number of light heads needed to do the job.

Interesting design. Get a large umbrella with a smaller foot print.

What are the exact edge to edge dimensions of the 88 inch- long and short side? I read that the long side of the 60 inch is actually 54, so I'd like to know that same info for the 88 inch as well. Thanks!

Umbrellas are measured around the back which makes the numbers higher than the face width of the umbrella.

question

If I have a 10x12 studio space, do I need to get the 60 inch or can I just get the 45 inch umbrella?
Asked by: Amy G.
I do mostly location work and bought 2- 45 umbrellas and this works great for me. I might add that they are heavily then any other umbrellas I have used in the past. The 60 might be a bit unwieldy.
