Nikon B500 overview

  • 1Description

The red COOLPIX B500 Digital Camera from Nikon features a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor for high-resolution imagery as well as Full HD 1080p video. This sensor's construction utilizes a stacked backside-illuminated design to improve clarity and image quality when working in dimly-lit conditions. The 40x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 22.5-900mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of environments. Further subject magnification can be achieved using the 80x Dynamic Fine Zoom that effectively doubles the camera's reach. The lens also features Vibration Reduction to help reduce the appearance of camera shake when shooting at the longer zoom lengths or with longer shutter speeds. A 3" 921k-dot tilting LCD screen allows image composition from unique angles, as well as image review and menu navigation.

Built-in Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity allow the B500 to pair with a compatible smart device using the Nikon SnapBridge app. Images can then be easily sent to the connected smartphone or tablet, and from there shared on favorite social media sites. Designed for simple, stress-free operation with point and shoot capability for both still imagery and video, convenience is maximized by selecting from among 18 scene modes or using the Easy Auto Mode, which automatically optimizes the camera's settings even while shooting under challenging lighting conditions.

16MP Image Sensor
The 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor features stacked backside-illuminated technology to enhance its low-light capabilities. 7.4 fps of continuous shooting is possible along with an ISO range of 125-6400.
40x NIKKOR VR Zoom Lens
The B500 has a 40x NIKKOR ED VR zoom lens with a focal length range of 4.0-160mm, giving a 35mm equivalent of 22.5-900mm, which covers wide-angle to telephoto shots with a maximum aperture range of f/3.0-6.5. It features three ED lens elements for improving sharpness, color, and image quality, as well as Vibration Reduction to reduce the appearance of camera shake.
3" LCD Screen
The B500's tilting 3" 921k-dot TFT-LCD monitor has an anti-reflective coating as well as 5-level brightness adjustment; making it easy to compose images from unique angles, monitor video recording, and navigate menus.
Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC with SnapBridge App
When paired with a compatible smart device using the Nikon SnapBridge app, built-in Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity allow the B500 to quickly and easily send photos for sharing on social media sites. Upload photos on the go, even in remote locations, or use a smartphone or tablet to control the camera.
Full HD Video
Record Full HD 1080p video at 30 fps with stereo sound. 4-Axis Hybrid Vibration Reduction (VR) keeps videos steady. Transform a video into a fast-motion sequence with the Superlapse Movie feature, great for first-person perspectives, sports moments, video tours, and more.
Easy Exposure Control
Simple, stress-free operation with point and shoot capability for both still imagery and video. The Smart Portrait System utilizes multiple features such as Face Priority AF, Skin Softening, Blink Warning, and more to enhance images of people; while Target Finding AF quickly determines the intended subject and maintains focus. Choose from among 18 scene modes or Easy Auto Mode, which automatically optimizes the camera's settings, even while shooting under challenging lighting conditions.
Built-In Flash
When shooting in low-light or backlit situations, the pop-up flash can act as a fill light to produce well-exposed images.
Energy Efficient
Take up to 600 shots on four regular AA alkaline batteries. Capture an entire vacation and more on just one set of batteries.

Nikon B500 reviews

COOLPIX B500 Digital Camera (Red) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this for my wife but she may never see it. Simple, easy to use right out of the box, great lens, reasonable price, Nikon quality. I use DSLRs and bought this for my wife, but it's so easy to use, download, and fits practically anywhere. I've never used a WiFi download with my cameras but will be updating now. This camera has convinced me. The lens has a great range, and takes excellent quality pictures throughout the whole range. Focus is quick and very accurate, even compared with my DSLRs. Now, if I can just get her to use it. I haven't really used the video, but am looking forward to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera. Great price We bought this for our Christmas present to each other. Put it on the tripod and started taking pics. This camera is very photo friendly :) I love the pics, the ease of using the camera and that it is lightweight. I do wish it had come with an infrared so I could pair a remote hence the 4 stars but the 10 sec delay to get everyone in place is plenty. It's funny how quick you think that is until you are standing/sitting with a smile on your face waiting for the camera to click. haha. Thank you B&H. We have recommended you to friends and family. Happy New Year!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not yet compatible with IOS (Apple) products! I bought this camera based on the features / price. Great zoom, good size, wonderful color (plum) and nice price. None of which is relevant since the main reason I selected this camera was for the Built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) which maintain a constant connection between the app and your camera, so each shot you take automatically transfers to your smartphone or tablet for sharing, editing with photo apps or uploading to your favorite sites. Wonderful and so easy, I thought. As another more forgiving reviewer noted, THIS CAMERA DOES NOT WORK WITH APPLE IOS. A promised app is allegedly forthcoming, which will then hopefully solve this issue, but had I known this from the start I would have purchased a different camera and not wasted so much of my time trying to get this to work. Good job, Nikon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera for Everyone, Super for Traveling I already had the earlier version but wanted the WiFi capabilities so this purchase was a no-brainer. It has many more features than expected. I did have some difficulties setting up the SnapBridge WiFi feature but kept at it and it now works. This camera is great for the novice as well as the more experienced photographer. It's a great size for travel without taking any accessories. Perfect for me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ABSOLUTELY The Best Camera For The Money I can't understand how anyone wouldn't love this camera. Someone commented about being unable to focus on dogs however I race VERY fast motorcycles and the pictures are always crisp and clear even at 40x zoom! I realize Apple makes fine products however the reason I buy android is because they're compatible with almost anything. They don't have a monopoly like Apple. You should have considered that before buying the Apple product, don't blame Nikon! As far as difficult, this is one of the easiest cameras that I have ever owned. I did have a Kodak Brownie long ago but I'm sure that I would have read the instruction manual before using it like befuddled B500 owners should have done before expecting perfect pictures from something they have no clue about. I truly don't understand how Nikon can make such a well-built camera at such a reasonable price! To all reading this, DO YOUR CAMERA HOMEWORK!! There's nothing to worry about with B&H backing you!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Camera! My wife is a professional photographer & is simply amazed with the Nikon B500! She took a test photo of our pet Cocketiel & at max expansion the photo remains perfectly sharp; no grain at all. The colors are also very ‘true-to-life’. WiFi & Bluetooth set up easily & worked flawlessly. The zoom is outstanding! Our previous Nikon had a 4X optical zoom, which was perfect for video-graphing our Grandkids’ basketball games, however, this zoom is ‘otherworldly’; 10-times as powerful! The best part is how simple the B500 is to operate. The controls are almost identical to our Nikon P7100 so there was a minimal ‘learning curve’. I may have to order a second camera because my wife is so enamored with the simplicity of this one that I may never set eyes on it again; even though her Nikons (with lenses) are more than $7,000.00!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Received As A Gift, Great Camera, Does Everything I Wanted. I Am Really Surprised At How Easy This Was To Set Up On My Android Phone And Tablet, I Am Waiting For The iOS App. To Be Released, So I Can Use My iPad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where's the IOS app for SnapBridge? Great camera so far and the pictures are clear and vivid. The ONLY reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I literally spent half a day trying to figure out how to get SnapBridge; when that did not work, I tried the wireless utility app, Bluetooth and finally tried a tin can and a string. You would think that as part of the advertising scheme they would fully disclose to all IOS users that the app is not available yet. Then when the IOS user buys the camera, (1) they do not waste time trying to get wifi to work with the iPhone; (2) they are not disappointed in the lack of an app because they knew it before buying - based on assurances the app will premiere soon; and (3) they won't leave 4 star reviews simply because they are irked because they pre-ordered not knowing there was no app yet for IOS. Makes perfect sense right? Must be a marketing person in charge at Nikon, calling all the shots, sitting in his corner office - all glass - sipping brandy. Nikon needs a product person like me calling all the shots! So if you want a great experience with this product, please see above, then buy.
