Nikon A900 overview

  • 1Description

The silver COOLPIX A900 Digital Camera from Nikon features a 20MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor for high-resolution imagery and 4K videos at 30 fps. This sensor's construction utilizes a stacked backside-illuminated (BSI) design to improve clarity and image quality when working in dimly-lit conditions. The 35x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-840mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of environments. Further subject magnification can be achieved using the 70x Dynamic Fine Zoom that effectively doubles the camera's reach. The lens also features Vibration Reduction to help reduce the appearance of camera shake when shooting at the longer zoom lengths or with longer shutter speeds. A 3" 921k-dot tilting LCD screen allows image composition from unique angles, as well as image review and menu navigation.

Built-in Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity allow the A900 to pair with a compatible smart device using the Nikon SnapBridge app. Images can then be easily sent to the connected smartphone or tablet, and from there shared on favorite social media sites. While a PSAM mode dial on top of the camera provides complete control over the shutter speed and aperture, automatic exposure and scene modes make it easy to capture a wide variety of frequently-encountered subjects under multiple lighting conditions.

20MP Image Sensor
The 20MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor features stacked backside-illuminated technology to enhance its low-light capabilities. 7 fps of continuous shooting is possible along with an ISO range of 80-3200.
35x NIKKOR VR Zoom Lens
The A900 has a 35x NIKKOR ED VR zoom lens with a focal length range of 4.3-135mm, giving a 35mm equivalent of 24-840mm, which covers wide-angle to telephoto shots with a maximum aperture range of f/3.4-6.9. It features four ED lens elements for improving sharpness, color, and image quality, as well as Vibration Reduction to reduce the appearance of camera shake.
3" LCD Screen
The A900's tilting 3" 921k-dot TFT-LCD monitor has an anti-reflective coating as well as 6-level brightness adjustment; making it easy to compose images from unique angles, monitor video recording, and navigate menus.
Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC with SnapBridge App
When paired with a compatible smart device using the Nikon SnapBridge app, built-in Bluetooth low energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and NFC connectivity allow the A900 to quickly and easily send photos for sharing on social media sites. Upload photos on the go, even in remote locations, or use a smartphone or tablet to control the camera.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Shoot 4K video at 30 fps with stereo sound. Face-priority AF helps keeps focus where it is wanted, and 5-Axis Hybrid Vibration Reduction (VR) keeps videos steady. Record up to one hour with the touch of a button, and save still images during recording or playback. Quickly and easily delete unwanted footage right in the camera, or transform a video into a fast-motion sequence with the Superlapse Movie feature, great for first-person perspectives, sports moments, video tours, and more.
Full Manual Exposure Control
A PSAM mode dial is available right on top of the camera, much like a DSLR. Control the COOLPIX A900's aperture and shutter speed to expose images exactly as wanted, or to overcome difficult shooting situations. Automatic modes can also make those decisions effortless.
Built-In Flash
When shooting in low-light or backlit situations, the pop-up flash can act as a fill light to produce well-exposed images.

Nikon A900 reviews

COOLPIX A900 Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent on a budget had to replace an older Nikon point and shoot a week ago and was looking for a 4k with timelapse that was wallet friendly. the timelapse modes are very easy to use and the creative "in camera photoshop" type options are nice. video recording could be improved - you hear the zoom in and out of the lens pretty bad. and the camera cannot re-focus while recording very well. but holy cow ZOOM! works great, even better on tripod of course. color and clarity seem good so far. no battery life issues yet. pop up flash seems a little flimsy... best to just be gentle with it. flip and rotatable screen is very handy. excited to travel with this for sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I'm glad I waited until this came on the market. I'm an advanced amateur and a loyal Nikon user. This is my 4 Nikon. I bought this camera for its connectivity features and it's easy to use. Great image quality and the new screen design is very useful. It's easy to start using the apps. The only negative things are that the transfer of images is not really instant. If you want to transfer images to your phone in full quality, it takes even longer. And I still can't tell whether it's connected to Bluetooth or wifi. The video quality is great but the sound in playback is a little tinny. The actual image size on the viewing screen is smaller than I hoped. The settings and tools are very easy to figure out. It's pretty sturdy while being light and attractive. Overall it makes a great grab n go high quality camera. The apps are very well designed and user friendly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My purchase with a great value I'm not professional photographer but I am picky about how my pictures look. I was at the beginning of my search for a great quality digital camera that was neither high-end DSLR but a premium Point and Shoot Camera with reasonable price. Picture Quality: Crystal clear and fast, with SanDisk 64 GB Extreme UHS-I SDXC 90MB/s Memory Card for this reason. Make sure you choose the right shooting mode, pressing the shutter-release button halfway to focus be set. The VR Image Stabilization works fine. I'm very happy with my purchase with a great value, a Full Manual Exposure Control , a optical zoom lens that provides a 35mm equivalent focal range of 24-840mm with tilting 3 monitor in a Point and Shoot Nikon Camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good camera with great feature set for what you pay. Good:: The features for the money you pay are unbeatable. Camera takes good pictures outdoors in good light. Great zoom, articulating display is more useful than I thought it might be. 4k Video looks good and even seems to work sell in situations where the camera can not take good photos. Snapbridge app seems to work well and is convenient. Bad: Indoor pictures can be fuzzy and dark. Auto settings don't seem to work well inside at all. At least I can pull still images from the 4k video in these situations. 4k video is HUGE.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds expectations I have used many cameras since 1967 in a hobby and professional capacity for a variety of uses, and have had good results, then from 2005 onwards moved to the digital camera era with some lovely cameras and lovely results. T The previous lovely results from previous cameras have changed, and I have now turned this weekend to fantastic results since acquiring the new Nikon Coolpix A900 (silver). Marvelous results so far in all settings including low light, wide angle, zoom etc. on still shots. HD and 4K video grate results also. Can I add that I have since taken 600+ photos with the Nikon A900 in including internal lecture photos with and without flash, sunrise and sunsets, airport shots under the apron lighting, flower and other close ups, building site photos and I have not been disappointed yet. I have done several photo shoots on several days in bright light conditionsof a subject starting from wide angle then zooming to max Optical equivelant to circa 840mm then on tripod to equivelant to circa 1680mm with excellent results. I have used it in various flash modes with terrific results. I remain very impressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value Have used this for about a month. I use it, because of the long zoom, for wild life photography. The compact size allows me to keep it with me most of the time. It must be steadied, like all long range zoom focal lengths, when approaching the max range. I would have liked to have a few more megapixels for better resolution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I do recommend this camera Yes, I recommend this camera. However, if all you really need is a simple camera that will simply give you a decent picture then you should look at a less costly item. I have been using this camera for about a month now. I still am experimenting with it. It is very capable. I use the term belt Camera for this type of camera. I keep one in a case on my belt when I travel or am with family and friends for normal gatherings. I purchased the A900 after I had to leave an older camera in a hotel trash can. I think one of the design changes on this camera might have extended the life of that older camera. More on that later. My only negative is that it does not have GPS which was a major function of my older camera. Then again I do not see that in any of the new cameras. It uses the same EN EL-12 batteries as several older generations of point and Shoot Nikons. That was important to me in that I have acquired 4 or 5 of these batteries over the years. The lens appears sharp and the camera is very capable. Read the manual, at least those parts of it related to functions important to you. Access to the menu for each mode is simple and setting changes are easy. There is full, simple shutter and aperture control with a visible exposure meter on the view plate. I have set the screen brilliance high enough that I can easily see the images before depressing the shutter release. The flash rises above the level of the camera body which should improve images though it may not reduce red-eye. The shutter release button is set lower than on my older camera which prevents accidental lens extension when in a case, that finally killed my older camera. Included with the camera is the usual ac adapter and USB cable used to charge the battery in the camera. I prefer to use an external charger and also carry a spare battery. You can order both battery and charger from B&H, both Nikon and Watson Brands. Both work well and the Watson items have worked well for me
