Photographers' Formulary 07-0105 Overview

Photographer's Formulary Gum Bichromate Kits provide you access to one of the most versatile and least complicated of the non-silver processes.

Photographers Formulary now offers two Gum Printing kits:

  • The Classical containing only black pigment, and
  • The Contemporary, containing red, blue, and yellow pigment.

Both kits have liquid Gum Arabic, Potassium Dichromate, and extensive directions for their use.

Gum Printing is unique among all the printing processes. It is distinguished by unlimited flexibility. The printer has complete control and may produce prints of any color or contrast.

These prints are characterized by a long, open scale that is soft and romantic, but fine detail is not possible.

Gum Printing uses water color pigments rather than metal to form the base. The paper is coated with the gum arabic and a dichromate salt.

When dried paper is contact printed, the exposed areas become water insoluble. A warm water development dissolves the gum from the unexposed areas.

The pigment in the retained areas forms the image. Multiple printing with different colors is a common technique.

The difference between the Classical and the Contemporary kits is the Classical will only do black and white while the Contemporary contains 3 color pigments.

This kit will make up to 35-40 / 8 x 10" prints.

Good introduction to gum

It would be difficult to find an easier inroduction to the gum printing process. All of the needed chemicals, including what's needed for sizing the paper, are included in generous quantities. The watercolor is a bit variable as far as the exact pigment, but all three colors for basic full-color printing are provided. The only real problem with the kit is the rather sparse set of instructions. While the directions for preparing paper and mixing chemistry are comprehensive, the guidance for printing is quite sparse. However, this is most likely due to the wide variety of methods and not an oversight on the side of the manufacturer.

Alternative Awesome-ness

The overall affect the product gives as an alternative process is amazing. Everyone should experiment with alternative processes, so why not try this. I did and absolutely loved my results. The colors came out well and really brought out my images. Definitely must try it!

Will vinyl gloves be acceptable to use? And what do you recommend for storage of the mixed dichromate solution?
Asked by: Rebecca
Yes, Vinyl is a great choice to handle chemistry. Recommended storage is about 65F in dark cool places. And we suggest delta storage for storage. What safety precautions are required for this kit please?

The ammonium dichromate should be kept away from heat and any other chemicals except as indicated in the instructions to this kit. We would also recommend using rubber or nitrile gloves and not touching it. Adequate ventilation is also always a good idea when dealing with chemicals.
