Elinchrom RX 4 overview

  • 1Description

Revolving around an updated triggering system, the D-Lite RX 4/4 Softbox To Go Kit from Elinchrom is a versatile two-light kit comprising everything needed for basic lighting setups and wireless control. Beyond the two lights and EL-Skyport Plus wireless transmitter, this kit also includes one rectangular softbox, one octagonal softbox, a translucent deflector, a pair of light stands and light stand case, and a durable storage bag for the lights and light modifiers.

The D-Lite RX 4 is a portable, multi-voltage 400Ws monolight featuring five stop power control in 1/10th step increments. Fast recycle times of as little as 0.35 sec keep you shooting without hesitation, and a 1/800 sec flash duration at full power is well-suited to freezing fast-moving action. The flash is also characterized by its integrated EL-Skyport receiver, which is compatible with the included EL-Skyport Transmitter Plus for wireless remote triggering and power control from up to 656' away. This transmitter allows you to trigger and set flash power for up to four groups, as well as an all groups setting, and 16 different channels, which are split between eight normal channels and eight hi-speed channels. A locking metal accessory shoe connector allows you to secure the transmitter directly to a camera, a top hot shoe and a 2.5mm sync port are available for directly connecting an additional strobe, and a swiveling design helps to improve reception for more direct transmission.

  • D-Lite 400W/s RX 4 Flash Head

The Elinchrom D-Lite 400W/s RX 4 Flash Head raises the bar on the capabilities of a lightweight, portable strobe. The auto-sensing, multi-voltage flash D-Lite RX 4 recognizes any AC power source from 90-260VAC, allowing power variability over 5.0 stops in 1/10 stop increments. Recycling is a lightning-fast 0.35-1.6 sec. (115V) with flash durations as short as an action-stopping 1/800 sec at full power. But that's just the beginning.

The D-Lite 400W/s RX 4 is packed with professional and convenience features usually found in flash heads twice its price. Forget about tripping over PC cords. Although this head accepts one it also has a built-in EL-Skyport Receiver with eight frequency channels that can handle four distinct groups of flashes. Separate purchase of the EL Skyport ELS Speed Transmitter not only allows you to trigger your flash at distances up to 393' but gives you control of power on/off, modeling light functions and Speed Sync activation. Free software for Mac and PC computers is available, providing additional features such as Flash-Delay for strobing effects. Add an optional Wi-Fi module to the transmitter and you can use specially designed apps that allow full remote control via your for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

D-Lite 400W/s RX 4's bayonet mount accepts all Elinchrom accessories and softboxes up to 53" (135 cm). It comes with a power cord with a U.S. plug, sync cord, flash tube and protective cap. The included 120V 100W modeling lamp must be swapped out when using the unit in nominal 230V electrical environments.

Elinchrom RX 4 reviews

D-Lite RX 4/4 Softbox To Go Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best quality lighting for your money After doing lots of research and speaking with great photographers, I took the move to invest in the lighting kit when setting up my portrait studio. I am really happy with the quality and performance of these strobes. It's a big bonus that everything you need comes along with the kit. A great choice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid lights at an affordable price. These lights are easy to transport and set up. Work great, an exceptional deal at this price point. The wireless trigger is consistent and the lights also trigger with a flash, which was helpful at an event I was working. The lights itself are made of plastic, making its body feel a little flimsy, but you get two heads that work solidly. Add the softkits and stands, this is a great package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looking to add some Elinchrom accessories. Used for a small portrait studio. Setup is a breeze. Plenty of videos available on Youtube to help with your setup and lighting. The product is well-made and the cords long enough for almost every room size. The Rx4 is a powerful strobe. The wireless unit works smoothly. The stands are very sturdy, Both softboxes are perfect for a small studio. You can up the power from the transceiver unit at the camera position but there's no way of telling what the power level is from the transceiver. Would be nice to have an LED window on the transceiver showing current power. I use a Sekonic flash meter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good strobes! I use the strobes in my little studio and they work great. I love the in-built receiver system, which lets you choose groups and channels and everything without extra cables and batteries for an external receiver. The only thing I disliked is that the fuse for the modeling light and the bulb for it burned through during the second time of usage - why? No clue, it just turned off. Replacing those two things will be about $12 so it's acceptable but it was no fun standing in front of a client trying to figure it out. Also, the softboxes are well made, stable and easy to assemble but a bit small.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Be careful when purchasing for Argentina since it comes with 2 modelling bulbs for 110V. When first using it, my fuses were burnt because of it. Had to purchase another set of lamps and fuses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, but one light is broken after two uses I have been using Elinchrom for the last 13 years but they have been much older models. I recently purchased this kit from B&H and one of the lights is having fan issues and only fires once or twice before seizing up with an error message. I haven't contacted Elinchrom yet, but it's on my long to-do list as I need these lights for work. Depending on my results returning/repairing the defective light, I will either make this a 5 star rating, or a 1 star rating. I hope this isn't a case of don't make them like they used to, but rather that I got a lemon. Outside of this issue, I would say this in regards to this specific kit. The octagon box is pretty much useless. It's far too tiny to be of any real use. The square box is the standard 2x2 so it's better but still not great. Also, these are not the kind of boxes I would want to break down often. I intend to purchase some Westcott rapid boxes to go with them. The stands are decent quality, not as beefy as say Manfrotto stands, but better than average kit stands. The transmitter works perfectly! I absolutely love not having to mess with an aftermarket transmitter or cords. Seamless use as it should be. Everything packs up so tiny that's awesome as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect kit for the price - Pros & Cons: Purchased 2 for studio & location use, absolutely worth the price. Things to consider: Pros: *Enough power for just about anything, leaf shutter and/or ND not required for outdoor cinematic style. *Low enough power settings to mix with speedlights for accents/hidden lights seamlessly. *Quick to assemble/switch modifiers *Lightweight and unexpectedly awesome cases (1 for lights, 1 for stands/mods) *Modifiers sturdy, high quality, with baffles, perfectly even and wonderful fall-off *Intuitive transmitter, PW's and YN's haven't seen much use since. Cons: *Stands are a little scary if adding larger modifiers outdoors (sandbags, assistant, or C stands a must.) *The umbrella clip is, in my opinion, strange. Attached to the same knob to angle the light, so loosening for adjustments requires holding the umbrella and carefully tightening enough to hold it in place but loose enough to not crush the shaft. Also heavy duty plastic might work long term, but be gentle to avoid bends/breaks/warps. (disclaimer: coming from 7ft parab, might not be an issue with smaller ones.) *2 is a great minimalist kit for most applications, but buying a second kit for 3 point/added versatility ends up with a lot of bags. Speedlights totally help, but obv encounter power limitations in some situations. (still totally worth getting or adding second set though) *Does not come with reflector dishes to control spread w/o modifiers, add grid, or use gels without removing modeling bulb. Must be purchased separately. *Larger box/umbrella definitely required for softer light on larger subjects, boxes included are more towards beauty dish + medium softbox (and perfect for that) All things considered, these are perfect, professional, versatile, and simple for use in studio or on-location, (outdoor use with care), and a phenomenal ecosystem/room for other brands to keep building the perfect kit. Perfectly priced for the quality and ease of use. Very well thought out. Bought 2, no regrets whatsoever.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a bad deal at the $800 price point This is a solid performer that yielded good results on our first location shoot with it. While the lightheads and softboxes along with their beter-than-expected-but-not-fantastic stands are good units overall, there are some basic deficiencies in the total package, Firstly, there was no "operators manual" for setting this system up and troubleshooting any problem issues. While the box did contain some small safety booklets and a two-page "quick-start" booklet....there was no formal manual. We had to go hunting on Youtube and other locations to figure out several issues. We still never completely figured out why both of our Nikon cameras would not sync up completely with the trigger/flash timing,(We got the black bar at the bottom of the photos both above and below the HSS 250 shutter-speed limit) Otherwise, the kit seems more than adequate if you have someone there who can trouble-shoot some issues for you without the manual. Otherwise a good price for a decent kit at the $800 price point.
