YUNEEC Typhoon H Overview

  • 1Description

This version of the Typhoon H from YUNEEC employs Intel RealSense Technology for enhanced autonomously flying. This navigation aid maps the environment in 3D to help avoid obstacles and provide positional data when GPS is limited or unavailable. Additionally, the hexacopter hexacopter features the GCO3+ gimbal-stabilized, 4K camera with 12MP stills mode, making it a perfect choice for aerial imaging of all types. The Typhoon H's hexa-rotor design offers better flight stability and more precise control compared to four-rotor systems – plus, it means failure of a single motor will not be fatal. The landing gear retracts in-flight, offering an unobstructed 360 degrees of shooting. Carbon fiber parts and folding motor arms reduce the Typhoon H's weight and profile for easy transport – even to the remotest of locations.

This bundle features the ST16 smart transmitter (radio controller), two flight batteries, the Wizard Wand controller, and a soft backpack.

Intel RealSense Technology
  • Intel RealSense Technology enables the Typhoon H to fly autonomously, intelligently navigating around objects and taking both safety and your creative options to the next level
  • The Intel RealSense R200 Camera and the Intel Atom processor module work seamlessly with the flight control firmware to add intelligent obstacle navigation
  • With a combination of specialized cameras and sensors, this system maps and learns its environment in 3D, recognizing each obstacle, planning an alternative route, and navigating around it
  • The module adds downward facing sensors to improve stability, enabling indoor flight as well as outdoor flight when close to the ground, even with poor GPS reception
  • Remembers previously avoided objects for future reference
  • Intel Atom-powered sensor module
  • Dedicated RealSense R200 camera

Flight Control System

No Fly Zones
The No Fly Zone preset locks the Typhoon H's flight ceiling at 400' above ground level at the takeoff point. This feature helps ensure compliance with FAA sUAS operational guidelines. In addition, Geo-Fencing can be enabled to further restrict possible flight patterns, locking the hexacopter within a user-defined radius of the pilot
Dynamic Return to Home
Simply switch to Home Mode and Typhoon H will return and land within 26' of you
Point-of-Interest (POI)
Locks the hexacopter in a circular orbit pattern around the takeoff point. This mode is especially useful for creating a circular "tracking" shot with a bird's eye view. In this mode the camera can still be moved independently
Orbit Me
The Typhoon H flies a circular path around you, keeping the camera trained on you the whole time. This is similar to Point-of-Interest, except locking onto the pilot rather than an arbitrary object
The Typhoon H will fly up and out, as far as 150', and capture the perfect aerial selfie
Curve Cable Cam
Program an invisible route for Typhoon H to fly along. Typhoon H will fly between pre-set coordinates while independently controlling camera position
Watch Me / Follow Me
Watch Me ensures Typhoon H will stay in one place and always point the camera at you wherever you go. Follow Me tells Typhoon H to keep the camera pointed at you as it moves along with you

ST16 Personal Ground Station

Transmitter (handheld radio controller) and ground station system are combined into one device with the included 16-channel ST16. It features a 2.4 GHz transmitter for joystick operation of the quadcopter. In addition, there is a 5.8 GHz-range receiver for the video feed from the camera plus telemetry data. For ground station functions, it features a built-in Android device with 7" touchscreen
7" Built-In FPV Display
View a live feed on the ST16's 7", 720p resolution display. In addition, it can show telemetry data from the flight controller, such as altitude, GPS coordinates, and remaining battery life. Settings can be accessed via its touchscreen interface

CGO3+ 4K Camera with 3-Axis Gimbal

The included CGO3+ combines a 12-megapixel, 4K camera and a 3-axis brushless gimbal into a single unit designed to capture stabilized aerial video and still images. For live view and remote operation, the camera features an integrated 5.8 GHz video downlink that enables operation and viewing from the 7" touchscreen on the ST16 Personal Ground Station. You can also pair with a mobile device using the free mobile app – available at Google Play and iTunes app stores
Wizard Wand for Two-Operator Control
The included Wizard Wand is a TV remote-style controller that can be used alongside the ST16. This means better videos and photos with one operator piloting the drone and one operating the camera

Airframe Design

One Motor Failure Survivability
A benefit of six rotors is that one can fail without stalling the aircraft. When the flight controller detects a motor failure, it adjusts its parameters to compensate. Maneuverability and performance will be greatly reduced; however, it gives you the chance to safely land the aircraft
Retractable Landing Gear
The landing gear retracts during flight to provide the camera an unobstructed 360° of shooting
Collapsible Design
The Typhoon H features quick-disconnect propellers for speedy breakdown. Additionally, each rotor arm folds down to a resting position against the drone for a more compact profile that is easier to transport
Carbon Fiber Parts
Carbon fiber components are used extensively to decrease weight and increase durability

    YUNEEC Typhoon H Reviews

Typhoon H Hexacopter with Intel RealSense, GCO3+ 4K Camera, Wizard Wand, and Backpack is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Money Spent After recently purchasing a Typhoon I am wholeheartedly impressed with the overall quality and ease of use. Having been a pilot and owning numerous drones I am in awe at how much easier it is to have a camera that records in 4K and can rotate 360 and not have to continously adjust the drone to get the shot needed. The drone is made of quality material and is easy to setup and operate. I do not miss having to set up a phone or pad on the controller as the Typhoon has it built in to the controller. Intel Realsense is an added piece of safety in flying and obstacle avoidance. 5 stars and thanks Yuneec for making a quality and affordable drone for the video and picture industry.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good with some caveats Most stable drone I own (and I have a fleet). This thing is a tripod in the air, it just hangs motionless in space. My Inspire 1 is always making little corrections. Also, the no-gimbal-limits 360 degree pan feature is awesome. 6 rotors provide redundancy and some peace of mind in the event of a motor or ESC failure and the retractable gear feature has a cool factor that clients seem to appreciate. On the down side is Yuneec's QA. I have returned 2 drones so far and the build quality (while good) seems to be lacking in the testing phase, so check out all of the features thoroughly before accepting the unit. As always, B&H's return policy is great and they've been very considerate. Finally, range is a bit lacking at 1 mile. Yes, it exceeds the FAA specs, but even within the limits, greater range translates into a more stable signal at shorter ranges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RealSense makes this a robot of the air I have a standard H and the RealSense Pro. Both have great new technology. A modular design for ease of add-ons and repair. I have flown 40 or 50 times, and like the H more each time. Yuneec documentation lags behind, but the company answers their calls and emails, their reps are friendly and helpful, and there are videos to explain various operations. I believe Yuneec has a great future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING I will start by mentioning I've only had this a short period & 7 flights under my belt. My mind was made up on either this or the Phantom 4, found a better deal on this Yuneec before Christmas. I have flown nitro helis for years. You will quickly find out...don't fly on windy days(+20mph) & don't fly indoors(you really need gps). When you do crash it, all the parts are available, I've replaced an arm & a landing gear leg...very easy to fix. The crash avoidance seems to work great but there are no sensors going up FYI. There are just too many goods to mention. The only flaw so far is the dark color, it's fine in the sky, but if you are flying infront of like say a tree line or shadows, it can be hard to see. I've seen peoples complaints that it's hard to tell front from back if you mess with camera tilt & pan...very simple, after you are done getting shots or video, tilt switch up, pan switch up, cam goes to dead ahead. I would be happy to answer any questions on this hexacopter, I'm sure i missed a million things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing 4K Drone I have done extensive research on camera drones and was convinced this was the drone for me. Boy was I totally correct! Since I received it there have been a few firmware updates that addressed any shortfalls the Typhoon may have had. And now it is in my opinion the Very best bang for the buck Drone out there. Being a novice and spending so much money on it was a bit scary, but from my 1st takeoff to now 2 months later it has proven to be a dream to fly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GreatPro/Prosumer Drone with Fantastic Support Let me start off with purchasing any drone you should take your time and do your research. I spent over a month researching both Yuneec and DJI to review their products relative to my needs and I choose the Yuneec Typhoon H Pro and here is why. Research - While product reviews give a wealth of information I also wanted to connect with people who were currently using the H Pro and get some feedback. Having done some research I found forums for both the Typhoon H Pro and the DJI Inspire. There I was able to connect with both communities and get a real understanding of what the products really had to offer, their successes, and some of their short comings. During my time reviewing the Typhoon H Pro I wanted to make sure the company also stood behind its product. Having called DJI support multiple times with a list of questions I never seemed to get a straight answer. I did the same with Yuneecs customer support (which I didn't have to sit on hold, they called me back) and answered all of my questions throughly. This reinforced what I had read in the forums, that their support was nothing less than top notch. Of the list of needs and what I was looking for this was the deciding factor in why I chose the Typhoon H Pro over the Inspire 1 v2. The Product Build & Quality - The Typhoon H Pro really is a comprehensive package. Its a stand alone system that doesn't require me to attach my phone or tablet to it to fly. From what I read with DJIs Inspire its recommended you use a cellular connected device. So I would need to get a tablet (I like larger screens), add it to my data plan, and this adds to my overall cost. Build quality is evident when you open up the backpack for the H Pro. Its light but you can see its built to a very high standard. The controller is heavy, large, and very complex but has everything within one system I dont find it awkward to hold or unbalanced. The additional packaged charger (Includes a 12V car charger), cables, SD card (does have an SD card), and two batteries all fit well into the backpack of the H Pro and will keep your gear organized. Flight & Video- Note: Make sure you update the firmware on the Typhoon before your first flight if the firmware if older, double check their website for the latest releases. There wasn't anything in the packaging to suggest to do that, like a STOP Update your Firmware. The H Pro flies like a dream but take it SLOW on your first flight. The documentation out there isnt the best but the forums and research really set me up to understand what to expect and how to fly the drone. The first flight I had was a windy day with steady wind over 20mph and its incredibly stable. I recommend taking each flight and breaking down 2 settings or controls to perfect because of the learning curve with the controller. Video footage is remarkable, it really did a great job. There are a tremendous amount of video settings but make sure you configure your settings for that particular flight, white balance etc. Tip: when you peel off the sticker on the camera lens make sure you use a microfiber cloth to clean it off. Unless you look closely in a glare there is a smudge or residue from that sticker on there after you peel it off. Closing - The Typhoon H Pro really is a fantastic product and I can see where they built it to expand future camera systems. Yuneec has done a great job really focusing on the hardware and has brought the software in line to continually perfect the H Pro. Lastly my only advise is to take it slow there is a lot to learn. Its a complex system but Its well supported and has a great community surrounding it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT! I spent 6 months debating, studying, researching the DJI Phantom 4 versus the Yuneec Typhoon H. I choose the H for some very specific reasons and I have not been disappointed. I own a video production company so doing my due diligence prior to ANY purchase is extremely valuable and has saved me thousands of dollars in the course of my business. I choose the Yuneec Typhoon H for the following reasons: 1) Quality control: Yuneec has a great quality control process that ensures the drones go out ready to fly. DJI quality control sucks which causes their customer support to be horrible. They are inundated with repairs, fixes and warranty issues. 2) Customer Support: An aerial drone is part of my business, a downed drone costs money. I have read so many horror stories about DJI customer support that it made me cringe. 3) 6 blades as opposed to 4: Better control in high winds. A blade can break and it will still fly. Much more nimble. 4) Panning ability: Not available on the Phantom and a great 360 degree panning ability on the Typhoon H. 5) Modular design: If Yuneec comes out with a new camera for the Typhoon H, I don't have to purchase the whole drone, just the camera...$$$$ Saves lots of money. Lastly, and I didn't know about this till I got the Typhoon H but the gimbal on this thing is amazing. Smooth as silk. Just as important as the camera. I am more than thrilled with my acquisition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to fly and the 4k video is awesome This drone is so easy to fly it practically flies itself. I am a first time drone pilot and I flew this thing all over in a matter of minutes. I did order the Yuneec Flight Simulator and played with it for 15 minutes or so first. I thought it couldn't be this easy but it was. I don't see how you'd even crash it unless just being totally careless. I honestly could not believe how still and utterly perfect the first video I made was. I don't believe video could any more stable if it was on a tripod, and the wind was blowing about 10mph. I feel like it was probably only a few years ago where this technology probably cost in the millions per unit, like for the military. I am beyond impressed with this drone.

Looking to purchase my first real drone. Planned on a DJI P4+ but am concerned of late with recent firmware grounding pilots. Does the Yuneec have such limitations? I'm looking to pass the Part 107 test and plan to follow all rules, but don't want to spend $2K on a drone that grounds me all the time!
    Asked by: Mark
I am not aware of a firmware update the DJI has put out that grounds pilots for not reason. For example if you live too close to an airport or federal buildings the drone will not take flight. The Yuneec Typhoon H has the same Geo-Fence technology.
