Novoflex ASTAT-SL Reviews
This thing is great, but to get the best out of it you will need a side mount gimbal.
First, sorry Bernie I bought mine used. About 7 years ago I had to decide between a side mount gimbal or a ball head for an around the world trip. I was planning on using a 400mm Telyt lens to photograph whales in South Austraila and ever ounce of luggage was a concern. After 6 weeks without a ball head I saw no reason to ever use one again. What makes a side mount gimbal the better solution is that when the horizontal axis passes through the camera-lens system's certain of gravity , the camera-lens stays where you point, no drag adjustment, no shift when the system is locked. Paradise. There are two ways to do this... L bracket arca rail + nodal rail arca clamp. RRS price $350. Or the Novoflex lens collar, less weight, less bulk, easier to mount. Novoflex price $230. Where it really shines is when you change from landscape to portrait you just loosen the screw clamp and twist. You will need replace the Novoflex arca plate with a square plate to correctly balance the camera-lens unit. The 1/4" NC thread mounting hole is already in place. I use the Novoflex collar with a RRS side mount gimbal $390. I also use the RRS unit with both the Leica 90-280 and 100-400 with and without extenders. To make these units balance you need to remove foot that comes with the lens and replace it with a square arca plate. The 1/4" NC thread hole is already there and if you can you will want to machine a half inch wide slot or better yet dove tail grove in the top of the plate to prevent it from twisting. Highly recommend the Novoflex Collar, but to get the best out of it you will need a side mount gimbal.
A useful clamp!
The collar adds a muchly improved mounting point for the SL and the 24-90 lens combination. It is not necessary for the 90-280 since it comes with a robust, non-QR mounting point but can be used instead of the standard mount. It worked well with my Novoflex and Gitzo QR's.
