Nikon D3400 overview

  • 1Description

A sleek and now connected DSLR for all, the red Nikon D3400 is designed to produce better image quality than your smartphone, yet work seamlessly with your mobile devices for sharing your memories. Utilizing a DX-format 24.2MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor, this camera provides a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the sensor and processor combination also provides a 5 fps continuous shooting rate as well as Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps. The sensor's design also omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve greater sharpness and resolution from both photos and videos.

Beyond image creation, the D3400 also features SnapBridge, which utilizes Bluetooth connectivity, for wireless sharing of images to your mobile device, including automatic sharing of 2MP images between the camera and your mobile device. The lightweight camera body incorporates a 3.0" 921k-dot LCD screen for live view monitoring and image review and, catering to first-time DSLR owners, the D3400 also features a helpful Guide Mode to aid in achieving specific photographic looks or techniques, such as how to produce shallow depth of field imagery in a helpful, step-by-step manner. Ten different Special Effects are also available in-camera to creatively refine the look of both stills and movies.

24.2MP DX-Format Sensor and EXPEED 4 Processor
The 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 processor work together to produce overall high image quality with notable detail, dynamic range, color accuracy, and low-light sensitivity to a native ISO 25600. Additionally, the sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to acquire the greatest sharpness and detail from subjects. The EXPEED 4 processor also enables a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including support for Full HD 1080p movie recording and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps.
SnapBridge Bluetooth Connectivity
Supporting a wealth of sharing and tagging possibilities, the D3400 features built-in SnapBridge connectivity to permit seamless transferring of imagery to a mobile device. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology enables communication between the camera and a smart device, and allows for automatic 2MP image transfers as you shoot. SnapBridge requires a one-time setup, for up to five unique devices, and also works in conjunction with NIKON IMAGE SPACE for backing up files and sharing imagery.
Multi-CAM 1000 Autofocus Sensor
Benefitting the high image quality is an apt AF system that employs 11 distinct AF points to quickly acquire focus in a range of lighting conditions from -1 to +19 EV.
Full HD Movie Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps, as well as HD 720p, in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. During recording, full-time autofocus can be employed, with face-detection and subject-tracking capabilities, for ensured sharpness with a wide variety of subject types. Additionally, a built-in monaural microphone can be used to record high-quality sound during movie recording.
Body Design
The D3400 integrates a large 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor, which features a 170° viewing angle to better support viewing capabilities from high and low working angles. Alternatively, a bright pentamirror optical viewfinder is also integrated into the design for precise eye-level viewing and real-time monitoring of subjects.

A built-in pop-up flash is also available for additional illumination when working in low-light conditions and supports Nikon's i-TTL flash metering system. A hot shoe can be used, too, for connection and optional external flash for even greater lighting control.
AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens
Included with the camera body is the standard zoom AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-82.5mm. Featuring an integrated pulse stepping motor, this lens exhibits exceptionally smooth, fast, and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video recording. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and a Super Integrated Coating is also featured to suppress lens flare and ghosting. Additionally, this lens also features Vibration Reduction image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld.

Nikon D3400 reviews

D3400 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Red) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 82.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great camera but app does not work I wanted a beginner level DSLR to see if I would like the hobby. It was daunting looking at all of the functions on the camera so it was nice to see that they had an automatic mode. After watching some youtube videos and doing my research, it was a great experience getting to know the D3400. I am fairly new to the hobby so I cannot give too much input on the physical quality of the camera; however, I can say that the app (SnapBridge) does not seem to work. If Nikon would update the app, I think this camera is a great buy! I think this camera would be a great way to get into the DSLR world!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple. Excellent. The NIkon D3400 is a first-class upgrade of the D3300. Light. Precise. Excellent photos. Helpful Guide mode. Good kit zoom. SnapBridge to Facebook. The price is right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from D3400 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black) Used extensively in the recent trip immediately. I am not expert in SLR so can't be too technical. Observed the below 1. Its an easy to use camera, lightweight and basically can be used as a point and shoot with correct settings. Will take more time to explore in detail. The picture quality is amazing than a normal phone or camera obviously. 2. Battery came up to 500 snaps though specs claim 1200 snaps. We kept the camera on majority time and were browsing photos too now and then. Maybe need to conserve by switching off regularly. 3. The basic lens zooms only to a certain extent. Will have to go with higher config lens

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great entry level DSLR - excellent image quality My main camera is the Nikon D750, and I have previously used the D300 and D100 and D5000. This camera is an excellent entry level DSLR that I bought for my daughter. Image quality is excellent as is low light performance, especially compared to older models such as my D300 and D5000. The camera is very small and light for a DSLR which makes it very easy to carry around. The new 18-55 P lens is a great improvement for video because it is silent. I have also been pleasantly surprised at how good the auto focus is in video mode - better than expected. Being used to semi pro cameras, I do miss the dedicated controls for things like focus mode etc, but this is a reflection of the fact that this is an entry level DSLR. Overall a great buy for a small entry level DSLR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I use this camera for personal use. I purchased the red camera body. I have been watching the price for some time and the sale B & H offered Thanksgiving weekend was amazing. Camera body, 18-55mm lens, 70-300mm lens & camera bag for just under $500.00. This camera is awesome! Great pictures, fast reaction for every shutter press. So far battery life is fine. Would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a fast easy to use camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy duty, not heavy in weight I just bought my D3400 DSLR as my entry back into photography. I just love this camera - it's just the right size, not huge and not heavy. The zoom lens is also a plus, since it can quickly frame a picture at the right crop, easily. Now I have to go through my stuff and decide what else I need. I did get a remote shutter release, a lens hood, a UV filter, and a larger SD card - it can go on and on, so I will just say that this was a great buy, shipping was fast, and I won't need to buy another camera for a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality camera It's the best camera I own and my first real DSLR. Has most of the bells and whistles I was looking for in my budget and it fits the bill just fine. The photos looks great and can capture the action quickly. I suppose if I were to complain it would be the shutter volume. People around you know you are taking a shot and that can either help or hinder your situation. I think the lens that comes with the camera is just right for most applications for me. This camera also takes great shots even in low light conditions. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not at all worried about the plastic case as you can always get one of those siliconized skins for more protection. Also love the red finish for this model. Overall a great DSLR camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes taking remarkably good photos a snap This camera has instantly rocketed the quality of my photos, compared to my iPhone 5, from average to excellent. I like that it can take better video (60p vs 30p) than the comparable Canon T6, and that the photos are higher resolution. The Guide Mode is a good introduction to the features of the camera, and I like how the camera warns when e.g. light is too low for my settings. It's fun to explore f-stop, shutter-speed, and ISO setting impact on photos and the on-screen view of these makes it easy to play with them. The optional remote for taking pictures without touching the camera is nice too. I like that with B and H, I can get free shipping and no tax on high-end electronics purchases.
