Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Reach out and capture some of the most distant subjects with this AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR Lens from Nikon. Designed for DX-format DSLRs, this telephoto zoom offers users an impressive equivalent focal length range of 105-450mm. Using an extra-low dispersion element and the Super Integrated Coating, users will be able to capture crisp, clean images with minimal flare and ghosting. Also, this model offers Nikon's Vibration Reduction image stabilization that can compensate for about 4 stops of shutter speed, something that is especially useful at longer focal lengths. The AF-P series of lenses uses a special pulse motor AF system which uses stepping motors for smooth, silent focusing during both stills and video shooting. This series removes switches from the lens barrel to avoid accidentally changing settings, allowing users to change settings in their camera's menu. Additionally, it utilizes a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

DX-format telephoto zoom offers equivalent focal length range of 105-450mm.
One extra-low dispersion lens element works to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.
Super Integrated Coating reduces the impact of flare and ghosting in your images.
A pulse stepping motor AF system enables accurate and silent focusing that works well in both stills and video shooting.
Nikon's Vibration Reduction image stabilization is rated to compensate for up to 4 stops of shutter speed to reduce the effects of camera shake.
Rounded 7-blade aperture diaphragm produces smooth out-of-focus elements.

    Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight DX tele zoom with super fast autofocus Lightning-fast autofocus, super lightweight for such a long zoom, VR, cheapthis is a great new DX lens! It zooms smoothly and has manual focus override. I wish it had a metal mount but otherwise my initial impression is very good. Be warned: this lens is *not* compatible with many older Nikon cameras including D7000. It works with D7100 and 7200, D3300-3400, D5200-5500, and D500 (see lens manual at if you'd like to confirm this). VR (and autofocus) is turned on and off in camera menu as there is no physical switch, but you might as well just leave it on. Update firmware if you don't see this setting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic bargain! Having owned at least 20 lenses over the years, and tested a dozen of these using an ISO 12233 chart as well as distance settings, I have come up with the following review: 1- Very quick focus. Much quicker than the old 70-300 with VR (I own both). 2- Exceedingly sharp throughout the 70-300 range. Edge to edge. Amazing. 3- Very lightweight at 14 ounces. 4- Unbelievably inexpensive for its performance. Cons: No lens shade included. How dumb of Nikon! Lens shade is on back order. 300mm stops at f6.3 . . . and one of the reasons it is so light! This is probably Nikon's best value to price lens made. Sure, it has some plastic components, just don't sling it around like a pro lens. It isn't!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, a great lens. Just starting to play with it. Seems great. Very, very sharp at 300mm;(have not really tried it at shorter focal lengths; assum it would be just as sharp if not sharper). 100% crops to pixel peep look excellent. Using it on a D500 helps, of course. Relatively light; no sense that it is heavy. Distortion control on D500 works well with it--no noticeable distortion. Autofocus is very fast and quiet. Hits on flying birds good. Smallish maximum aperture not an issue for my use. Bottom line, I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Lens I bought the 18-55 AF-P lens as soon as it was available and was so impressed with the improved sharpness and handling over the previous 18-55 versions that I purchased the 70-300 AF-P hoping that the same would be true of this lens and I was not disappointed. The lens is sharper than the previous 55-200 and 55-300 lens that I had. The zoom is smooth, the manual focus works well and while I don't use it a lot I do like not having to move a switch. The mounts are plastic and while I would prefer they were stainless steel it keeps the cost down and I have never had one break even though I have had several plastic mount lens. I am careful with them though and don't pick the camera up by the lens. I find the 18-55 AF-P and this lens along with the D5500 are all I need. I have the D750 with several primes which I love but find myself using the D5500 and these 2 lens more and more when I want a lightweight combination. Both lens are definitely winners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING LITTLE LENS! I love this inexpensive, little zoom! It is way sharper than it has a right to be. When I keep this lens set a f8, it is absolutely TACK SHARP throughout its zoom range. I just printed a 40 panoramic of a great egret in flight, that I shot with this lens set at f8, on a Nikon D7100, at 200 ASA and the print is as sharp as I get with any of my high end glass. Just unbelievable for such an inexpensive lens. The AF-P autofocus is the fastest I have seen on ANY's just always in focus. VR works great! The lens has an inexpensive plastic lens mount, but it seems sturdy and locks solidly and smoothly onto the camera. It has no buttons or switches on its body. AF and VR must be turned on and off on the camera body and I cannot turn off VR, when using it on a D7100. However, when locked solidly on my tripod, the VR doesn't seem to be an issue, during long exposures. I love the 105-450mm range on my crop sensor D7100. This is a great little lens for tracking birds in flight.... small, very lightweight and quick to use. I highly recommend this amazing little zoom lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, fast and sharp. This is a great lens. It's super light and when attached to my d5500 it's lighter than my p900! Great for arthritic hands! Focuses fast and images are sharp for a consumer lens. Original image at 300mm, P mode, straight from camera. 2nd image cropped. Not bad for a lens in this price range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for the price! Lens arrived late this afternoon. Took it to my backyard to play with it. Used visitors to my bird feeders as my subjects. Shots were taken in relatively low light as it was around 7:30 P.M. and the sun was lower in the sky. Also, there were a lot of trees around which reduced available light. I was pleased with the results. Can't wait to shoot in better lighting conditions. No, this little zoom won't produce professional results in low light, but it has potential to take great shots. Lens was used on a d500.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Diamond In The Rough A great outdoor lens. Easy to carry, excellent image quality, VR, affordable. It isn't fully compatible with all Nikon DX cameras so check their list, other you will loose important features.
