Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Updating the staple DX-format standard zoom, the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR from Nikon offers a 27-82.5mm equivalent focal length range as well as an especially sleek form factor. Two aspherical elements are featured in the optical design, which help to control spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize high sharpness and accurate rendering. A Super Integrated Coating is also used to minimize flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy. Suiting both photo and video applications, the AF-P designation indicates the use of a pulse stepping motor that offers notably quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance. Additionally, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Standard zoom spans wide-angle to portrait focal lengths and is designed for Nikon F-mount DX-format cameras, where it provides a 27-82.5mm equivalent range.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
AF-P pulse motor uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A retractable lens barrel design maintains an especially compact form factor when the lens is not in use. Additionally, autofocus and VR switches have been removed from the lens design for a sleek profile; these operations are now accessible in compatible cameras' menu systems.

    Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Huge Improvement I have had several copies of the 18-55 lens starting with the non-vr version to the current VR version which I quit using because the zoom was sticky and not smooth and it wasn't that sharp. This AF-P lens is the best one I have had and a huge improvement over all the other versions I tried. Much sharper, the zoom is smoother and it is now the lens I leave on my D5500 most of the time. I don't use the manual focus much but it is nice to not have to mess with a switch and can just focus the lens manually like my other AF-S lens. I did have to update the software on my D5500 to be compatible with this lens new features but it was very easy to do. Definitely can recommend this lens and am thinking of updating to the AF-P 70-300 lens now also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast focusing & quiet I bought the 18-55mm AF-P lens because it has the quieter pulsed (stepper) motor which is a big improvement in noise reduction and focusing speed especially for videos. One has to have the latest camera firmware. When the lens is attached, the Optical VR then appears in the menu (d10 on a D500, which BTW also has Electronic VR for video under Movie Shooting). Pros: quiet, fast focusing, sharp (two aspherics), compact, light. Cons: plastic mount, no hood included, cheap white push-on back cap, no pouch, cheapened front cap (no metal springs; squishy feeling), no VR switch. Nikon really, in many ways, cheapened the entire lens. However, the sharpness and quiet speed outweigh the cons for me as I wanted improved performance for the occasional movie and I got it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No brainer upgrade Faster, quieter, smoother, sharper and more ergonomic in use than the predecessor- for the same cheap price, so whats not to love? Yeah, you got to toss an extra hundred bucks into the mix for a 55mm HD3 Polarizer, but so what? Still the best value in photography! I upgraded the lens and camera firmware in my D7200 so this lens would work with all functions- easy and fast thanks to Nikon firmware download site. Im a very happy camper!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens if you get a good one Bought this as a kit lens with a D3300. Began to notice the sharpness was not what it was, so I did some tests, and rather than pay Nikon bench rate of $200, I opted to buy a new lens, this one. I'm happy to say this one is sharp. So the 4 stars are for poor quality control, otherwise it would have been 5 stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work on a 3 year old camera I bought this lens as a replacement for my daughter after her tripod tipped over and broke the kit lens her D3200 came with. I had checked several web sites which made me believe the D3200 would drive this lens with a firmware update. The lens arrived, we updated the firmware, and it didn't work. At all. I can't believe Nikon can't make a new lens compatible with a camera bought in 2013! I also have been having problems with B&H about the return/exchange of this lens. I'll just take the camera to a local camera store and buy a replacement where we can fit the old 18-55 and make sure it works before we buy it. I actually waited for this lens to become available thinking it would be an upgrade over the old 18-55. Now I'm sorry I did. If your camera isn't brand new, you might want to skip buying this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little lens This lens is great to shoot with. it is light, compact and easy to shot with. It has been living on my camera since I got it. it is sharp and contrasty. Hard to believe you get so much out of such a cheap lens. Excellent travel or street lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well with D7200 Wanted to upgrade my old Nikon 18-55 with the newer version to take advantage of the D7200's capabilities. Not disappointed. Solid lens.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be Careful with the VR I am a hobbiest/enthusiast with many years of experience. Received this as a kit lens with the purchase of a D5300. Didn't expect much, build quality actually looks somewhat cheap, with a plastic mount and no switches for focus or VR. Planned to use as a landscape lens on a tripod. Pictures were never clear, handheld or mounted on a tripod, even using a trigger cable. Was about to throw this lens away but decided to do some research. I guess by default VR is enabled as a factory default within the camera, and the VR in this lens basically vibrates a little motor constantly to try to compensate for hand shake. This will induce vibrations into the camera when mounted to a tripod. Turned VR off and now pictures are far more clear, will now be keeping this lens making sure VR is always off. Color rendition appears good, low light performance is not, is ok as a general purpose lens.
