Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Overview

Updating the staple DX-format standard zoom, the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR from Nikon offers a 27-82.5mm equivalent focal length range as well as an especially sleek form factor. Two aspherical elements are featured in the optical design, which help to control spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize high sharpness and accurate rendering. Suiting both photo and video applications, the AF-P designation indicates the use of a pulse stepping motor that offers notably quiet, fast, and precise autofocus performance. Additionally, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Standard zoom spans wide-angle to portrait focal lengths and is designed for Nikon F-mount DX-format cameras, where it provides a 27-82.5mm equivalent range.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
AF-P pulse motor uses stepping motors to deliver impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications.
VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
A retractable lens barrel design maintains an especially compact form factor when the lens is not in use. Additionally, autofocus and VR switches have been removed from the lens design for a sleek profile; these operations are now accessible in compatible cameras' menu systems.

Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Reviews

Bargain Performance

My first plastic mount lens purchased as refurb and is like new. It is a sharp lens, but one should expect that from the modest max aperture. If you have not experienced the focus consistency and speed of an AF-P lens, this would be a very economical choice to do so. Whether using your camera's phase detect or contrast detect (Live View), focusing is instantaneous. As I said, the lens is sharp, especially the middle two-thirds of the frame. Corners are soft from 18-35mm, getting better as you zoom in, and the edges behave likewise, but not as badly as the corners. I noticed this during my testing on flat objects, but it just is not noticeable in the way I take pictures. Image quality is WAY better than my 16-35 f/4 VR in EVERY way. The VR works well, but I don't get 4 stops like some can claim. If this were a $1,500 lens, I would give it four stars for the slow aperture, but it's cost is actually one tenth of that, so 5 stars is appropriate. Before purchasing, make sure you check the compatibility for your cameras!

Genuine bargain

This refurbished lens works as it should, is indistinguishable from a new lens except for its packaging and limited 90-day warranty. Optically it is very good, in a nice lightweight housing. Obviously not as durable as a heavier and more expensive 18-xx lens, but should work well for a casual walk-around lens. A genuine bargain.

This replaces the one I got with the D5600. Destroyed the original by dropping it - 5' seems to be when the glass will break.

Which one is better, AF-P lens or AF-S lens?

Which one is better, AF-P lens or AF-S lens?
Asked by: Paul
It depends on the use. AF-P lenses utilize a pulse motor which gives smoother and quieter focusing compared to the AF-S lenses. This is a benefit to those who are shooting video. AF-P lenses do not work on every Nikon, so I would check compatibility first if you happen to have an older model.

Will this lens work on Nikon D90?
Asked by: Paul
Not like you want it to work. It's an AF-P lens, designed for more modern iterations of Nikon DSLRs. What will work on your D90 is the AF-S version of the 18-55mm lens, which can be found new, or at a bargain price 'used'. The AF-S version is quite good optically, but somewhat noisy when shooting video.

Is this lens compatible with the Nikon Z50?
Asked by: Ron
Only if you use a Z-to-F mount adapter. Nikon has one for about $250, and a couple of 3rd party manufacturers make one. I believe Z series cameras work best with Z mount lenses, but if you already have F mount lenses, and don't have the cash for a new Z mount lens then try the adapter.
