Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning a versatile and long-reaching focal length range, the Nikon F-mount SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 from Tamron is a 4x zoom covering telephoto to super telephoto perspectives. Complementing the long reach is an optimized optical design that features three low dispersion (LD) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range. eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to reduce ghosting and flare when working in strong, backlit lighting conditions.

Beyond its optical attributes, the G2 version of this lens also incorporates a FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism to permit locking the zoom position at any focal length position to prevent accidental zoom extension. Conventional zoom lock is also featured to prevent barrel extension during transport. Suiting handheld shooting situations, Vibration Compensation (VC) is a 4.5-stop-effective image stabilization mechanism that helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when working with slower shutter speeds. A ring-type Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) autofocus motor delivers notably quick and accurate focusing performance to suit working with fast-moving subjects, and full-time manual focus is also supported for fine-tuned control. Benefitting its use outdoors, the lens also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to guard against dirt, dust, moisture, and smudging from affecting image quality. The ergonomic and durable metal construction of the lens also incorporates textured focus and zoom rings, and a removable, rotating tripod collar with an Arca-type compatible foot is supplied to better enable shooting from tripods and monopods.

Spanning a versatile, long-reaching range, this tele to super-tele zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, and can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 225-900mm equivalent focal length range.
Three low dispersion elements are incorporated to nearly eliminate both axial and transverse chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.
A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control.
A FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism enables you to lock the zoom at any position in order to prevent unwanted zoom extension during use. A conventional zoom lock switch is also featured, which locks the zoom in place at the 150mm position to prevent zoom extension during transportation.
A sealed, moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.
Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.
A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates. Due to this unique design, this lens is only compatible with select Nikon F-mount cameras that support an electromagnetic diaphragm, including the D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500, D300, D300s, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D850, D3x, D3s, D4, D4s, Df, D500, and D5 DSLRs.
Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

    Tamron 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 reviews

SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 for Nikon F is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! So far I am very impressed. I have a version 1, I was just ok with it. I was looking to pick up either the Nikon 200-500 or the Sigma Sport. When this was announced, I ordered believing it would be an improvement over the G1, and seeing that depending on the review, the G1 was better reviewed than the others, I was excited to try it out. The focusing is faster, it is sharper at 600 wide open, and I have been impressed with the sharpness without any lens tuning. My G1 will be used as a backup and a share lens when i go out with others to take photos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very good big lens at a good price I haven't had this lens long enough to test it exhaustively, but two features have impressed me from the outset. First, it is sharp enough for general use (although perhaps not for the most exacting professional use). It is certainly sharp enough for me. Second, the autofocus using a Nikon D500 is very fast even in lower light levels. Until dusk is advanced, this lens focuses as quickly as my Nikkor 70-200 f/4. I wasn't expecting that and I am very pleased. A big lens like this has limited uses but this one is very cost-effective for those uses, for those of us who are not professional wildlife photographers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sharpness and autofocus As many people in the superzoom market (Tamron/Sigma/Nikon), I was conflicted about which lens to choose. I settled on the Tamron 150-600 G2 due to its length advantage over the Nikon, and cost advantage over the Sigma Sport. I have taken it on one trip to the zoo so far and am very impressed with this lens so far. The focus speed was quick, even in dim indoor exhibits. The lens mount works as expected and seems very durable. The weight is manageable. I wore the lens/camera around my neck for 2.5 hours and it was fine. My elbow/arm was a little sore though from holding the lens up for multiple hours. The lens came with the TAP-in console, but I have not felt that I needed to use it for micro adjustments. I would highly recommend this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took a change on a Non-Nikon Lens I have always purchased Nikon lenses for my D810s, and was very hesitant to invest in a Cheap lens. I just picked up the Tamron 150-600m G2 lens a couple of weeks ago, with the intention of using it for my annual trip photographing the grizzlies emerging for their dens in Yellowstone National Park. During my early testing I have been very impressed. It has given me very clear shots. Most of my photography is with tripods or monopods, but tried the 150-600 handheld to see if I could get a few clear shots with it. Much to my surprised, even without the VC mode on, I received very clear results. I did keep the speed at least three times the focal length. I would recommend this lens for those on a budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens also captures great closeups. I sold my old Tamron 150-600 (a pretty decent lens) a couple weeks ago and replaced it with the G2 This new lens is really worth the upgrade. It's good looking, fast auto focus, great image stabilization, and sharper than the old model at all focal lengths. The locking zoom ring is fantastic. I have placed a link below to some close up images. Since I shoot RAW, the images are post processed but I couldn't ask for better quality. http://mdougherty.com/100-THEPHOTOEXPERIENCE/130-FLORA-1/misc-tamron/00-flora1-misc-intro-scroll-htm.htm

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real lens bargain. I have tried this lens on a D810, a D800, and a D7000 with excellent results with each. Autofocus is generally crisp and positive with occasional focus hunting. VR works as advertised. I was surprised and pleased by the results handheld at 600mm. Tamron pays a lot attention to detail. They even include safety screws for the Arca-Swiss foot and a hex wrench to install them. I do strongly recommend buying a padded case. The case Tamron packs in the box may protect against cosmetic scrapes and scratches but is too thin to protect from bumps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really like this lens I have no experience with the previous model of this lens so can only speak about the G2. I have a Nikon D3300 and use this lens primarily for wildlife, mostly birds. I am very impressed with this lens. Almost all my shots are at 600mm (900mm or 18x equivalent) and are either hand held or resting against a tree or my car. Most pictures are very sharp. The autofocus is fast and accurate. I have had good experience in getting sharp pictures of birds in flight. For close ups like insects it does a good job. It's close focus is around 8 ft which works out well for butterflies and other skiddish insects. The lens is heavy and long so not for long hikes if weight is an issue for you. I am fortunate to live near a wildlife sanctuary so most of my shots are at or near my car.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well I am quite please with this lens, sharpness is right on even at 600mm, and color reproduction of even subtle shades is excellent. The image stabilization works well, but you will probably want to use this lens with either a monopod or tripod when possible. The controls on the lens are handy to get at, and well marked. The case that comes with the lens is not much, so if you need a hard case keep that in mind. My only complaint is that the focusing ring is way to narrow for those of us who prefer to manual or pre-focus. In my opinion this lens is a bargain.
