SLR Magic APO HyperPrime Cine 50mm T2.1 Overview

A cine-style lens that covers full-frame sensors, the SLR Magic APO HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 Lens projects a 44mm image circle and is suitable for use with select cameras that have a 6K sensor. It features cine-style focus and iris gears and an internal focus design that allows you to pull focus without the length of the lens changing. This makes it well-suited for use with rod-mounted lens accessories and matte boxes. The lens features a PL mount.

The 150° of focus rotation provides for precise focus pulls especially when working at close focus. The lens focuses in the industry-standard direction and has a 95mm front diameter and a 62mm filter thread. The front of the lens does not rotate as you change focus, which may allow for the use of clip-on matte boxes and sunshades (depending on weight) as well as polarizing filters.

Coverage
The lens covers full-frame sensors.
Internal Focus
The internal focus design allows you to pull focus without the length of the lens changing. This is especially important when working with rod-mounted lens accessories such as follow focus units so that the gears remain engaged as focus changes. The consistent lens length also makes using a rod-mounted matte box simpler, as there is no concern for pushing into or pulling out of the matte box, and you don't need a bellows-style antireflection ring.
Industry Standard Focus and Iris Gears
Built-in iris and focus gears follow industry standards, allowing you to work with optional follow focus units and lens gear motors.
150° of Lens Rotation
150° of focus rotation enables precise focus adjustment, especially as you focus close to the lens.

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime Cine 50mm T2.1 Reviews

Great Lens, incorrect filter thread listed in specs

I have the set of these including the 50, 85, and 25mm, lenses; they are lovely. However, I'd like to note that the filter thread diameter for the 50mm lens is 62mm, not 58mm as described in the specs. The 85 and 25mm lenses have a filter thread diameter of 82mm.

An absolute bargain for quality PL glass.

Such a lovely lens. I compared it directly with a Zeiss CP.2 50mm I'd been using over the years, and the difference in purple fringing at high contrast points was jaw dropping. The Zeiss had a quite a fair bit of fringing, while there was no fringing whatsoever with the SLR Magic APO. This is a true, legit APO lens. A nice surprise considering how loose many manufacturers are with the 'APO' moniker. The lens has a really lovely, cinematic rendering. Finds a nice balance between the hyper crisp, clinical look of modern lenses and the flattering character of a classic cinema lens. Just the slightest hint of veiling flare when wide open. Incredibly clean, smooth bokeh thanks to the spherical optics (no aspherical elements), and 13 aperture blades with rounded edges. Very little focus breathing. Adapting these lenses to EF is crazy fast and easy with SLR Magic's optional matching PL-EF adapter. It's quite compact for a cine lens, however it is very dense due to the amount of glass. The only items I can fault it on are a rather pedestrian minimum focussing distance of 2', and a fair amount of vignetting when shooting wide open on vista vision/full frame (don't notice any real vignetting when shooting 135/APS-C). Unlike the CP.2's, CP.3's, Xeen's, Sigma Cine, and Canon Cine lenses (which are almost completely photo optics rehoused in cine bodies), these were designed for cine use from the optical design on up.
