Roland V-1SDI overview

  • 1Description

Roland's V-1SDI 4-Channel HD Video Switcher supports HD-only video signals over three of its inputs, and can support SD, HD, and computer video formats up to 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) at 60 Hz on its fourth. It supports progressive and interlaced material, internally converting the interlaced footage to progressive for processing. Featuring a preview, program, and multiview output, you can easily monitor all your inputs at once on the multiview while isolating your preview and program screens.

The HDMI inputs and multiview output are HDCP compliant, while the SDI inputs and SDI preview and program outputs support SMPTE 424M (SMPTE 425M-AB), 292M, and 259M-C. You can control the unit via the built-in RS-232 port, or via a PC using the USB connection. Eight memory functions enable you to recall specific setups, which makes it easier to get up and running when the switcher is shared among different productions. Built-in features include image freeze and output fades.

Video Input
The switcher handles four video inputs, up to three SDI and up to two HDMI. Inputs 1 to 3 are SDI, with input 3 shared between SDI and HDMI with support for HD video formats. Input 4 is HDMI-only and, in addition to supporting HD video, also supports SD and computer formats.
Audio Input
The switcher supports analog audio on as well as mic input with or without plug-in power.
Video Effects
  • Transition: Cut, Mix (Dissolve/Fam/Nam/Mosaic), Wipe (30 types)
  • Composition: PiP, Split, Quad, DSK (Luminance key, Chroma key)
Audio Effects

This output can display all active inputs on the same screen via the HDMI output.
  • The built-in memory function allows the memorization and convenient recall of panel settings, such as effect assignment to each button. The memory stores up to eight configurations and keeps stored settings, even with the power off
  • Freeze video input
  • Fade audio output
  • Fade video to white or black
The V-1SDI HDMI inputs and outputs are HDCP compliant.

    Roland V-1SDI reviews

V-1SDI 4-Channel HD Video Switcher is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from SDI INS/OUTS OVERHEAT The Roland V-HD1 is a reliable unit and prompted me to go with a V-1SDI because I needed SDI connections and the form factor was ideal for a specific application. I used the unit once for a two-hour event and the SDI IN/OUTS ran hot and the unit itself overheated, video disappeared and the unit locked up. Only after power cycling it and allowing it to cool down for about five minutes did it operate normally. But, the same thing happened within another hour or so. So, I returned the V-1SDI for a refund and will stay with the V-HD1.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As expected. I purchased mine from a different retailer here in Canada, I've had 0 issues with overheating or issues of that sort. I think a particular con that should be noted though, is that it does have fans, and like most other switchers I have used, in a quiet room it is relatively very loud for such a small unit. The ATEM TV studio had fins on the rear that you could cook eggs on when it was running, but it was silent. The ease of traveling with this thing is sort of life changing. I'll take its shortcomings (not many worth noting for price and size really) with grace. I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Electronic Wonder This is a fantastic piece of equipment. I absolutely love it. Well made, light, and loaded with features. I purchased AV Matrix converter boxes to use with the Roland v-1SDI; HDMI to SDI, and SDI to HDMI. The v-1SDI is easy to use, and has an intuitive interface. The free Roland companion software works great too. Dollar for dollar, this Roland device is an extraordinary value. Get it's matching case too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never had overheating.. As always I get a product, check for latest firmware and software before use. Since then had it for 8 months and never any problem with it. Used it in several 8 hours event production with computer and cameras and works perfect. On a table with cables and airflow in open air. One small note maybee but always important, same format on all inputs important (apart from the hdmi 3 scaler input) can make it lock up.. mostly used it in 1080i or 720p.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Update to previous review - Overheating & Crashing This is an update to a previous review; Roland proactively contacted me based on my previous feedback (quoted as originally written below) and has done a great job of making things right and standing behind their product. Roland Technical Support was prompt and professional in exchanging the defective unit we had received initially for a replacement unit; in addition to the manufacturer's own burn-in and testing period, we've used the replacement switcher on some fairly hot days outside and the it has been stable. The surface of the switcher still gets noticeably warm, but no further crashes or instability have been reported from the field, and it does a great job of being a simple yet powerful little switcher. It's not without a few quirks and default settings that should always be checked - most notably, the sleep timer that isn't disabled by default - but it's a great value and for simple jobs, nice and easy to just setup and go compared to anything else in this price range. ORIGINAL REVIEW FROM 4/10/17, which this review replaced: Except for the fact that it has repeatedly overheated, in the middle of a show, dropping all inputs and outputs until it is manually power-cycled, it's a *fantastic* piece of gear. Until Roland comes up with a solution / better thermal design in hardware, it's probably best to stick with the older, more stable V-1HD and spend the money you'll save on a few SDI/HDMI converters....

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overheating problems Just installed one of these units for a client. Had tested a few times but only for about an half hour each time. During my clients 3 hour open house the V-1SDI shut down twice. Now the unit will only go about 1 1/2 hours before overheating. Had to place it on a laptop cooling pad just to make it through a 2 hour Sunday Church service. NOT a reliable product!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Overheats Bought this unit looking for a small SDI switcher to add to inventory. First 2 gigs went great. 3rd event was a load in the day before, it overheated about 2 hours in. Was sent a replacement, it has overheated now too, and I am in the process of finding a new solution. Will likely go to the HDMI and by a pair of converters to live in the case with it.
