Tether Tools Case Air overview

  • 1Description

A seamless means for wirelessly controlling your camera from a mobile device or computer, the Case Air Wireless Tethering System from Tether Tools is a compact device affording remote control and monitoring capabilities. The Case Air attaches to your camera via USB connection, and can be mounted via its hot shoe, and then produces an 802.11b/g/n ad-hoc Wi-Fi network for connecting to the camera via the Case Remote app for iOS or Android. A wireless range of approximately 150' is well-suited to a variety of on-location shooting applications, and within the app you are afforded a live view image along with tap-to-focus control, and pinch-to-zoom within the live view image for more critical focusing. Within the app you can also adjust exposure settings, including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, as well as access creative shooting controls, such as exposure bracketing, bulb timer, focus stacking, HDR, and time-lapse shooting modes. The Case Air also lets you wirelessly share imagery from your camera to your mobile device for instant sharing on social media.

    Tether Tools Case Air reviews

Case Air Wireless Tethering System is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, Lightweight and Easy to setup Easy to setup right out of the box - I found the right cable that matches my camera and plugged it in, followed the instructions on connecting my iPad to the Case Airs WiFI and I was off to the races. From there, started shooting and the image showed up fairly quick on my iPad. I liked that I could pinch and zoom to really get in there and check focus on specific points in the image. The Case Air small and lightweight, Ive had it on both my hot shoe and hanging off the side of my camera using the included lanyard strap. Battery lasted about six hours, no problem there. The Case Remote app that powers the Case Air has received a couple updates since Ive purchased which I appreciate it, seems like Tether Tools is working on making it better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed I had high hope for this product. I needed to use live view focus on a larger screen such as iPad. Super slow response time. Pixelated live view. Hung up when trying to preview the jpg file. I tried again on a laptop with the same results. Both devices struggled finding the case wifi. The lag was just horrible. It did focus. But you don't see a good live view of the photo to know if exposure is correct. When plugged into your camera you lose control of your camera to make any changes. Have to do with the app, and again painfully slow. Case Air has a great idea, but needs more development time in the field.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty Darn Slick I've only had this for a couple weeks and I must say, Its pretty smooth, plug it into the camera, push the on button, start the camera and go to wifi settings on your devise, click on Case, start the Case Air app and shazam, up and going. I'm using this with a Canon 6D and iPad mini 2 or iMac, iPhone 5s or PC laptop, they all work great, I shoot Med jpeg fine and Raw, both previews pop up in about 2 seconds on the iPad, form there, tap on the jpeg preview and check focus and anything else, exposure etc. Raw files can be evaluated on the computer app, all files stay on the camera card and you can see all your files on the card and delete from the app, Shoot jpegs and share to message, email, FB through your phone quickly. I have a shoot coming up that requires the camera to be on a outrigger equiped tripod shooting straight down from seven feet photographing product, so I plan to use the Case Air and the iPad to set the camera view, exposure etc. and be next to the subject and change product for each shot, no going up/down a ladder or having a wire to trip over while getting the product lined up in frame, focused and all that jazz. I'm very happy with tthe Case Air and I'm glad I jumped on it, the developers really put some thought into this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart, Small, and Complete - well done Case Air I've only just received it, but I've had time to get familiar w/ it and I'm very impressed. I wanted to be able to monitor my interior shots from a larger screen in live view untethered. In a wide angle shot in a tight room, I can be a room away. The Case Air gives me great operability to manage the camera settings and shoot from the iPad, and do so much more. Yes, there are other remotes out there, but the fantastic price coupled w/ the great software that is bundled w/ this VERY SMALL unit made it the one to have. And I love that I can leave the hot shoe clear because I can just hang the Case off the side of the camera, it's that light.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hardware appears good, software unusable for now What's good: The hardware appears to work well. The wifi connections to my devices (Windows laptop, Android phone) appeared solid throughout a few hours of testing. It has an internet pass-through function so that you can be connected to the Case Air and still have internet connectivity. The phone and email support is good. I emailed a question late on Dec.23, and got a reply Dec.27 from a real human at Tethertools. I called with a followup and spoke to the same person who had emailed me. What's bad: The software. Finding support on the website. The Android app (v. 3.0.0) looks pretty and many functions work. But some crucial ones don't, as acknowledged by Tethertools support. Using the Windows app (v. 3.0.0001) means first allowing an unsigned app from an unknown publisher onto your computer. If you're ok with that, you're rewarded with an app that visually resembles a high-school C++ coding project (see photo). Using a (dual card) 5D Mark III, I couldn't figure out how to send only JPGs to the computer, leaving the RAW files on the camera. So I broke down and decided to RTFM, so went looking for the FM (manual) online. Short version: There is no manual for the Windows software(as of Dec.27 , 2016). But you can sure waste a lot of time looking for it if you try, which I did. As for how to transfer only JPGs, and leave RAWs behind, as it turns out, the Windows software can not currently do this. This feature is in development, as per Tethertools support. Since RAWs from my camera take 10 seconds to transfer, this is a dealbreaker for me. Overall, I have great hopes for this device. In its current form, however, while it may work with some some people's workflow, it's unusable in mine for the reasons described above. Just in case this helps others: if you're looking to download the Case Air software: Starting from Tethertools' home page, 1. scroll to bottom - under SUPPORT, click FAQ 2. scroll to near bottom - click dedicated FAQ for the Case Air here. On that page you'll also find a series of 14 short instructional videos, about a 1-2 minutes each. Warning: watch more than two videos with the sound on and you.will.go.insane.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Charging issue. Giving it another chance later. I tested the unit out 2 days before the shoot along with the required software. I read the instructions thoroughly and everything worked properly but could not figure out why it would not fully charge. The light was amber and decided to take a risk and use the Case Air. On a location shoot the unit failed me as soon as the photo project began. I continued to shoot without the Case Air and would've been great to have a detailed image that I could pin point errors or improvements. I'm giving it another chance but if the unit does not fully charge I'll contact the company directly about this issue.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Blurry Pictures on Ipad and Tablet I have connect the case air to my Nikon D750 and D300S download the software to my ipad and LG Tablet and LG G4 phone. I can get a connection from the device to my ipad and tablet but not the cell phone. No bigger 2 out of is good. When I take pictures and it appear on the ipad or tablet they are blurry for some reason. I take the memory card out and and plug it into the computer open lightroom and view the pictures the look good. No sure why they are showing blurry on the ipad and tablet. I think I will be returning this if I can't solve the problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very useful addtion to my photography tool bag. The Case Wireless Tethering system is a valuable addition to my camera bag. It is becoming very useful for my macro work as well my architectural photography. Both usually have my camera in a position where viewing the live screen display is not very convenient. The ability to have the Live View at a convenient location as well as controlling the camera remotely is invaluable. The one down side I have with the unit is it is not really useable with my L bracket in the vertical position, which most of my architectural shots are taken in. It needs to have a 90 degree usb adapter to connect with the camera for vertical shots.
