Nikon KeyMission 170 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon KeyMission 170 is a rugged and advanced action camera that captures up to Ultra HD 4K resolution at 30/25 fps. Offering an ultra-wide 170° angle of view, it allows you to record an immersive view of your surroundings in high detail. You can also capture Full HD 1080p video at up to 120 fps slow-motion, 720p HD at 200/240 fps super-slow-motion, and high-resolution still images.

The KeyMission 170 is built to withstand the elements: Without any extra housing, it is waterproof down to 33 ft, shockproof from 6.6 ft, freezeproof, and dustproof. Aside from making the camera more convenient to use, not requiring a housing allows for cleaner image and audio capture, since there are no additional layers between the lens and microphone and your subject. Like the rest of the KeyMission series, the KeyMission 170 uses a glass Nikon Nikkor lens, representing Nikon's commitment to this lineup.

The KeyMission 170 also features internal electronic Vibration Reduction (for 1080p and 720p capture) that will reduce the effects of shakes and jitters in your outdoor adventures, providing you with a smoother image. A free-to-download Nikon control and playback app is also included with the camera that's compatible with both iOS and Android mobile devices.

A 1.5" display on the rear will allow you to set up and monitor your shots in real time as well as play them back for instant review. The included battery will run up to 110 minutes when capturing video, up to 250 shots when capturing stills, or up to an entire hour underwater.

The KeyMission 170 comes with a varied set of accessories, including a remote control, lens protector to prevent scratches, and underwater lens protector that will allow you to achieve better focus underwater. Additionally, it supports many more optional KeyMission accessories for riding, watersports, and everyday outdoor activities.

    Nikon KeyMission 170 reviews

KeyMission 170 4K Action Camera is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It Has Potential Just inboxed and began using the Key Mission 170, and it has several impressive appointments: simple controls, easy to navigate menu, and the best feature - a standard tripod thread mount without using a housing. The monitor on the back is smallish, but i see it only as the simplest of framing tools - not for critical viewing. There are a few issues: the 170 degree field of view can be excessive, and it lacks ND filtering...both of these can be remedied if accessory lens attachments come on the market. The camera does have an actual mount ring...so there is potential. The SnapBridge app is in its infancy and pretty useless. Not impossible to connect, but enough hassle that I opt not to. The remote is also difficult to link, so that will need tweaking as well. Will it beat the competition? Not yet - there are some fairly mature action camera systems out there. But I'd say this has potential to run with the pack in time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great addition to action cameras I was very excited when this was announced as I use Nikon for all of my camera equipment. It is pretty easy to use and the quality is pretty good. I expected a little more from the video quality but it is an action camera so I understand that and is not a big deal. The app is still buggy but once you set it up it works just fine. I tend not to use it though as to save battery. I do wish that there were more accessories for the purpose of an action camera but there are not many that utilize the standard mount. Again, this is understandable since the main action camera previously was gopro so there are way more things made specifically for that. Nikon does have a bunch of accessories for the camera but they are extremely expensive in my opinion. The backpack clip is basically a large binder clip that costs $35.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could have 5 stars, but... The image quality is good - much better than the GP5 in all respects - better low light performance, better dynamic range, better color rendition. The camera however is lacking in features - the most glaring is that there is no option for narrow FOV. This is simply inexcusable, as the barrel distortion at 170 deg. is awful. The choice of shooting modes is very limited, and it is made worse by the weird choice of names in the UI. Instead of having Resolution / FPS it has some weird language, like add slow motion - why is this? The UI needs a lot of work, and the app especially is very bad. It feels as something totally incomplete, like an alpha release. The LCD screen on the camera is tiny, and I mean TINY. Not really useful. Also, you don't get a separate charger, so if you have multiple batteries you can charge only one at a time in camera, which is very inconvenient. On the bright side, the build quality is very nice, and this includes the accessories too - much better than the GoPro.Audio is also better and cleaner than the GP5. You get an in-camera metal tripod mount. All in all - promising, but needs more work and a new feature rich Firmware update ASAP.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK but not a great picture I bought this with high hopes for some dynamic video in an action camera. I would say it is no better than the GoPro and possibly not as good. Kind of disappointed. I thought Nikon would have higher standards. The nice thing is you don't have the external housing like on the GoPro. The slow motion feature at 1080 is OK but I wish the image was clearer. Haven't tried it underwater but I hope to.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute Poo If I could leave a minus poo rating, I would! GOPRO HERO7 BLACK IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THIS NIKON NIGHTMARE! I never even was able to get this camera to turn on due to it not recognizing any of the many types of micro SD cards I used, INCLUDING THE 32 GIG CARD THAT CAME WITH THIS CAMERA! During the initial setup, I could NOT pair the camera to my Note8 smart phone, nor would it recognize the Nikon remote which was an included accessory!. B&H NEVER answered my questions, they just left me hanging! So, I destroyed it! I feel better now...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good glass, Poor software, No Bluetooth or WiFi connectivity I have only once gotten my new KeyMission 170 to connect iPhone 6s and it has never connected to my MacBook Pro. I am running current versions of iOS and Mac OS (OS X). The camera menu is convoluted and difficult to navigate. VERY poor design. The manuel is useless; even when following the instructions in the manual to the letter, one cannot connect. It makes me think it was written in another language and poorly translated to English. I have tried various combinations of booting my iPhone and MacBook in combination with the 170 to no avail. My issues have not been resolved. I spent over an hour with the support rep who was patient and walked me through connecting my Key Mission 170 to my iPhone 6s Plus. to no avail. Clearly, Nikon's software (again) is buggy and incompatible with iOS 11.0.3. Why does Nikon software always have to be so bad? All Nikon software I have used to date has been buggy with Mac OS and now iOS. Will the new $3000 D850 also be crippled by buggy software? I sent this camera in to Nkon Service and it was sent back to me as being OK and included a poorly written instruction sheet that was probably translated from Japanese by a middle school student. Following those instructions to the letter did not help WHAT is the problem? I am considering selling it and getting a GoPro Hero 6 that works.
