ARRI'S SMB-2 Matte Box Basic Set includes the modular components needed to hold up to three 4 x 5.65" filters. The SMB-2 is designed for use with most primes and smaller zoom lenses. This basic, non-tilting set consists of the SMB-2 matte box, a two-filter stage, a one-filter stage, and the 19mm Studio Arm. The SMB-2's modular design features stackable filter stages, a removable sunshade with captive screws, and rotatable stages with a rear, geared frame drive. The swing-away front provides easy access to your lens without having to slide the matte box off the rods.
Three horizontal filter frames are included, one of which is geared for use with the gear mechanism on either the one- or two-filter stages. The gear function enables a camera assistant to smoothly raise or lower a graduated filter as needed during a shot, such as when panning across a horizon or between areas with varying exposure levels. The SMB-2 will accommodate ARRI Master and Ultra Primes as wide as 14mm as well as the Alura series zooms. The included tray catchers prevent both the filter tray and filter from sliding out the bottom of the frame when the tray lock is loosened.
Accessories such as a top and side flags and matte sets are available separately. An anamorphic sunshade and corresponding mattes and flags can also be purchased separately.
This Basic SMB-2 Matte Box Module from ARRI is composed of the 4:3 sunshade, a non-tilting extension module, and an R2 ring–compatible back plate. A mounting arm is not included nor are any filter stages. The SMB-2 has a modular design, and is ready to accept stackable 4" x 5.65" filter stages, either the 19mm or 15mm rod mounting arm, and other separately available components as you wish. The SMB-2's swing-away design provides easy access to your lens without having to slide the matte box off the rods.
When shooting with an ALEXA in 2.8K format and using up to a 3-filter stage, the SMB-2 will accommodate lenses as wide as the 14mm ARRI Master/Ultra Primes, and the ALURA zoom series. The SMB-2's back plate is sized to accept R2 adapter and reflex prevention rings.
The SMB-2's removable 4:3 aspect-ratio sunshade may be swapped out with a 2:1 ratio version for anamorphic capture (available separately). The sunshades handily feature captive screws so you won't find yourself searching for tiny black screws in a dim studio after you've removed the shade for any reason.
The SMB-2 One-Filter Stage from ARRI includes one geared filter frame. This stackable stage features a rear gearing mechanism for use with one geared filter tray. It also has an integrated filter/tray catcher to prevent the tray from sliding through bottom of the stage when the side lock is loosened. The stage's one 4 x 5.65" filter frame is rotatable.
The 19mm Studio Arm for SMB-2 is a mounting component of the ARRI SMB-2 Studio Matte Box. This bracket attaches to the SMB-2 via its set of integrated rods. A large, knurled thumbscrew is used to fasten the bracket onto a pair of 19mm rods (not included). Vertical adjustments can be made with a 0.3mm Allen key.
