MrStarGuy 55mm Thread-in White-Light Solar Filter
Key Features
  • Designed for Solar Photography
  • 55mm Lens Threads
  • Neutral-White Color without Tinting
  • Tear-Resistant Solar-Viewing Film
Photograph sunspots, surface granulation, eclipses and planetary transits with your telephoto lens and the StarGuy 55mm Thread-in White-Light Solar Filter. These filters display the sun in a neutral white color without the red or blue tinting common in many glass and film filters. Made of a tear-resistant solar-viewing film, it is coated on both sides to eliminate the effects of pinholes while the intentional wrinkles improve image contrast and will not affect image quality or safety. The filter ring is made of a durable and lightweight aluminum alloy coated with a reflection-limiting anodized finish. This version of the solar filter has threads that allow it to thread onto the front of 55mm lenses. For the safety of your eyes and equipment, never look or point the camera directly at the sun through a lens without proper solar filters as permanent damage to the gear and your eyes will occur.

MrStarGuy SG55MMSOL Reviews

Does the job, but not perfect

I got this as a sort of last-minute solution to be able to photograph the 2023 Solar Eclipse. It worked great, but I was a touch disappointed in the quality for the price, which is why I didn’t rate it 5 stars. Specifically, there is some warping in the film and a couple scratches that were visible when I first opened it up. Luckily, they didn’t seem to have any noticeable affect on the photos, but that may just be that the darkness of the filter hides the imperfections.

I would like to have actually received a 55mm solar filter

Ordered in early April 2017, shipped and my card was billed in late April. Received a 52mm filter in a box labeled 55mm. Requested RMA with special instructions to verify that correct filter was in the box when they reshipped. Waited about 10 days for B&H to receive the return, then chatted with Support to make sure they were confirming the correct filter on the replacement. Was assured they were. A week later I received another 52mm filter. Finally cancelled the order. It's been about 5 weeks since I originally placed the order and I still don't have the filter or my refund. The first time in 20 or so years I've been completely unsatisfied with a B&H order.

question

How much reduction does this offer?
Asked by: Joseph M.
It offers a high amount of reduction. With this filter you can safely point your camera directly at full noon day sun and take pictures of it at regular settings. I'm not by my PC otherwise I'd tell you some settings examples. I am pretty happy with it.
