Panasonic 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Spanning a useful wide-angle to short telephoto range, the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens from Panasonic is a 24-120mm equivalent zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Designed in collaboration with Leica, this versatile lens utilizes four aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements to deliver well-corrected, sharp image quality that is void of color fringing and distortions. The lens also makes use of a linear motor for fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance, and the POWER Optical Image Stabilizer system helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, the durable metal body of the lens renders it splash, dust, and freezeproof to suit its use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard zoom for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras, this lens provides a 24-120mm equivalent focal length range.
Four aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion elements contribute to minimizing chromatic and spherical aberrations and various distortions in order to produce a high degree of clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy.
Linear autofocus motor delivers fast AF performance that is also precise, smooth, and near-silent to benefit both stills and video applications.
POWER Optical Image Stabilizer minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting, and also supports the Dual I.S. function for increased stabilization performance.
Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

    Panasonic 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 reviews

    Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic lens Been shooting Nikon equipment since the early 70's. Good Nikon equipment is great, but heavy. Lately I've been looking for a lighter camera without sacrificing flexability or Image quality. The Olympus Mirrorless camera came close to satisfying that objective, and the Leica / Panasonic F2.8 lens puts the combination over the top. It's macro capability will handle most field requirements. Greater macro capability results in greater weight. The 5:1 zoom provides very good image quality (hand held) across a very handy image range. Very low (to no) noise when shooting at ISO 1600. Quality at higher ISO values will depend on the image objectives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great general purpose lens Wow! What a lens. I've been using (and loving) my Lumix G-X 12-35mm f/2.8 zoom for years. Now I have a single lens with greater reach with substantially the same weight, size and image quality. I'm not a video shooter so the constant aperture is not so important to me. Mostly, I use this lens for landscape, travel and events. In these situations I stop down to typically f/5.6 anyway. (For art photography and portraits I use a bright 25mm or 75mm prime lens. In summary, its a great lens to be the only lens you leave the house with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECT WALK ABOUT LENS Great match for Pen-F for a lightweight walk about zoom kit. Outstanding optical performance and usefulness with equivalent 24-120 focal length range. I considered the Oly 12-100/4.0 but it's larger size, longer focal length, and additional 8oz makes it more of a ride about kit on the Pen-F. Bonus: the 12-60/2.8-4.0 suffices as a macro and I no longer need my 45/2.8 macro. Highly recommended. If price is a concern, consider investing in fewer but better lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent walkaround lens for GX85 I have a Lumix GX85 as my small travel camera but wanted a wider range zoom for a recent trip. The 12-60 f2.8-4 is close to perfect. Its range covers most anything I needed and I only used my longer zoom one time over the course of two weeks abroad. The lens is solid, heavy, and seems as well built as the other Panasonic zooms I have (12-35 f2.8 and 35-100 f2.8). I probably won't use it much on my GH5 because I shoot mostly video and want constant aperture. But for stills and for a general all purpose lens, it's difficult to beat this one. It's a bit heavy for a tiny camera such as the GX85 but with the added handgrip I have on that camera, it's fine. Using it without the extra grip might be a little awkward.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not replacing my 12-35 for video work I agonized over the decision to keep this lens to compliment my existing 12-35 mk1, but in the end I returned this 12-60. I will say, the quality at 12mm equals that of the 12-35. However, for video work on a small sensor camera, f4 just isn't flexible enough. Going to purchase the 35-100 2.8 instead. If you want an excellent outdoor video lens, try it! And of course, for photography, this lens is incredible!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens for GH5 It has been reviewed to death. What I can tell you is I get the same results with this as I do with my Canon 5D3 and 24-70. I thought I was just buying the GH5 for video. This lens changed my mind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One lens to rule them all I have the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 OIS. I viewed this as the ultimate "walk around" lens until I purchased the 12-60 f/2.8-4 OIS. Now I view my new lens as the perfect M4/3rds "One lens". Like many, I've moved away from heavy full-frame rigs. Don't get me wrong. I love my Sony a7RIII with it's exceptional (but very heavy glass options) and it's awesome low light capabilities, but the ergonomics and mobility of my Panasonic gear is a game changer. I've always compared the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 with my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 and found them both almost without fault. The 12-60 produces images on par with the 12-35, but gives me more reach, particularly with candid portraits. The difference in length and weight between the two lenses is insignificant. With all of these lenses I see a bit of vingneting especially when shooting wide open, but this is easily forgiven as it is easy to fix in post. I've been experimenting with the G9 and the 12-60 f/2.8-4. I've been impressed that I can hand hold the camera and get good results indoors without a flash shooting with shutter speeds as long as one second. The dual OIS is truly amazing. There's no going back for me. My only wish is that the manufacturers would put some serious effort into improving the M4/3rds sensors at ISOs greater than 1200.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for a 5:1 zoom; great walk-around lens. I bought this to supplement my current lineup, and use as a walk around lens instead of the 12-35. I like the extra range it offers. While not quite as sharp as the 12-35 it is still a very sharp lens, and only some nasty pixel peeping can see the difference. Expensive, but worth it.
