Mitakon Zhongyi 35mm f/0.95 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing an incredibly fast maximum aperture with a standard focal length, this silver Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 Mark II Lens from Mitakon Zhongyi is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length. The bright f/0.95 maximum aperture offers increased control over depth of field and focus, as well as benefitting working in low or difficult lighting conditions. Maintaining a high degree of image quality throughout the aperture range, a sophisticated optical design features both low dispersion and high refractive index elements to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing.

Balancing the optical components is a robust all-metal lens body that facilitates a smooth manual focus design along with a manual de-clicked aperture ring for smooth, silent exposure adjustment. Depth of field and distance scales are also featured on the lens barrel to aid working with pre-focusing techniques.

A versatile standard prime, this 35mm lens is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras where it provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
An extremely fast f/0.95 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also avails considerable control over depth of field for selective focus applications.
The 11 elements, eight groups optical design incorporates one extra-low dispersion element, two extra-high refractive index elements, and three high refractive index elements to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and fringing, as well as contribute to a high degree of sharpness and resolution.
Manual focus design is complemented by both depth of field and distance scales for utilizing pre-focusing and zone focusing techniques.
De-clicked aperture ring offers silent, smooth adjustment that is well-suited to video applications.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Metal lens barrel offers increased durability, yet remains lightweight at 1 lb.

    Mitakon Zhongyi 35mm f/0.95 reviews

Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 Mark II Lens for Fujifilm X (Silver) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most Fun Lens I Own For the past few years I've mainly shot on a Canon 6D with a variety of L lenses. I recently picked up a Fujifilm X-E3 because it looked like a fun, yet still capable little camera, and I decided to buy this fully manual lens with it. Oh Man, This Thing Rocks!!! Insanely sharp in the center wide open, and the corners get better as you stop down. Unlike many of the autofocus lenses from Fuji, this lens truly is fully manual, so no focus by wire system here. Manually focusing it is surprisingly simply on the X-E3 and an incredibly fun experience. Bokeh is beautiful. Colors are accurate. Color fringing does show up in a big way in direct sunlight, but not a major issue. 100% recommend it to anyone considering purchasing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not really f/0.95 Just got the lens and did a quick side by side with my Fuji 35mm f1.4. While the DOF on the Mitakon is what you'd expect from a 0.95 aperture, the light gathering ability is not. The lens is at most 1/4 of a stop brighter than the Fuji 35mm f1.4. Probably not even that much brighter. It's almost identical in terms of exposure! It's going to be difficult for me to keep this lens considering it's so much heavier than the Fuji 35mm with the only benefit being moderately softer OOF areas and slightly shallower DOF. Otherwise the lens is fine. Nice build quality. Smooth focus and aperture rings. Not sure it's worth the price though due to no light gathering benefit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised and definitely a keeper I bought this lens without having a solid review upon which to base my decision. That made me a little nervous, but the prospect of having a lens capable of great bokeh without the need for an adapter prompted me to take the chance. I love the 58mm f/1.2 and the 90mm f/2, but a 50mm full frame equivalent focal length is extremely versatile, and still my favorite. I have had the opportunity to shoot many test shots with the lens mounted on an X-Pro2 over the last few weeks. I can say I am very pleasantly surprised and will definitely be keeping the lens. This lens should appeal to video shooters (clickless f/stops) or portrait photographers (for the bokeh). If sharp, had the potential to be a great value for the money. So far, I have found the lens is very sharp, with slight falloff at the edges wide open just as one would expect. The focus barrel is very smooth with moderately long throw. The focus ring is slightly more narrow than I am used to, and it's to the rear of the f/stop ring, which initially resulted in me usually changing the f/stop and wondering why the focus wasn't moving. That just requires a little adjustment to the controls. For kicks, I shot a set of comparison photos using a Zeiss 32mm f/1.8 Touit and this lens, both at f/8 and compared them. Obviously, I manually focused this lens, but autofocused the Zeiss 32mm. At f/8, the Mitakon Zhongyi was usually sharper. This really surprised me, but indicated this would make a very versatile walk around lens if one did not need autofocus. The vignetting is characteristic of these fast lenses, certainly not more than you would expect from a high quality lens. I like that in portrait photography, and if you don't, it's easily corrected in post. The Chromatic aberration is very well controlled, and I never felt compelled to correct it. The contrast is excellent and color rendering superb. The bokeh is really pleasing and exactly what I was looking for in a lens like this. All that said,

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I stand corrected I previously gave this lens a 2 star review due to its price and apparent lack of exposure benefit. While it's true that the lens appears maybe .2-.3 stops brighter than the Fuji 35mm f1.4 (on an X-T2), I have come to realize that's not because of any deficiencies on the part of this lens. It has come to my attention that Fuji (and apparently many manufacturers) artificially increase the sensor gain when shooting at large apertures--even in RAW. This is due to diminishing returns when using large aperture lenses in combination with digital sensors. Something to do with pixel pitch and the angle of light coming through the lens. In any case, what this means is that the camera does not artificially increase the exposure of images captured by the Mitakon since the lens has no chip in it to tell the camera aperture information. This means that images from the Mitakon show approximately 1-stop less grain than images from large aperture Fuji lenses. If your skeptical it's easy to test: Shoot a test frame at f1.4 with a Fuji lens. Then slightly disengage the lens until the camera registers f0 because it can't communicate with the lens. And take the test image again. You'll see an image 1-stop darker. In light of these new revelations I have decided to provide a glowing second review. The lens is indeed heavy, and a bit more expensive than I think it should be. BUT, it is a really nice piece of glass. Creamy bokeh, fantastic aperture and focus ring smoothness for easy adjustment particularly when shooting video, pleasing vintage looking lens flare, and the benefit of 1 stop less sensor gain at large apertures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Image Quality and sharpness Like this lens a lot. It's pretty sharp in the middle and edges/corners are acceptable at f/0.95. Bokeh is beautiful and build quality is top notch. It's not that big size wise but it is dense and heavy but that is expected if you want such a wide aperture. This lens provides similar results to a 50mm f/1.4 on full frame. The only minor issue is it does have CA wide open (purple and some green color fringing). Fortunately you can easily correct it in post but if you want OOC Jpegs, it will not be corrected automatically like other Fuji lenses. Overall I highly recommend this lens especially with all the focusing tools of the Fuji system if you don't mind declicked aperture ring and also the ring is in the front instead of the back so you can easily mix it up. You get used to it after a bit so it isn't a big deal

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Maximum Bokeh for APS-C mirrorless https://www.jlbwedding.com/mitakon-speedmaster-35mm/ The Mitakon 35mm is clearly the bokeh king of this focal length on the X system. It’s creamy bokeh even rivals the wonderful XF 56mm f/1.2 R. For now I’ll be packing both the Mitakon and the Fuji f/1.4 for work in case I want/need auto focus. I love this new f/0.95 35mm and think it’s essential if you are using Fuji X for work. Cons: HEAVY, some Chromatic Aberrations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not the sharpest tool, but so much fun Upfront: this lens is not the sharpest wide-open, it is manual focus, and the aperture ring is de-clicked. But it is the most fun I've had with a lens, ever. The focus ring is well dampened, and the sharp fall-off at f/0.95 makes it a little easier to tell what exactly is in focus. Focus-check zoom also helps. It's nice being able to shoot a little wider but still maintain a shallow depth of field, sort of like a larger format camera. The lens also comes with a very nice faux-leather case (see first image below). I don't think I'm going to use it for anything, but I appreciate the effort. [Photos below are straight from the camera with no editing.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing Short of Amazing I've had lens for 8 months now and it has been glued to my xt2 when I use it. List of things I love about this, 1. Very sharp lens even at 0.95(in the center) and gets sharper over all as the f number increases, f2. 8 till f8 are amazing sharpness 2. Shallow depth of field is very pleasing 3. Controls and feed back is very good with proper resistance, focus control wheel is perfect for me. Things that require improvements, 1. There's no sure f stops as the aperture ring does not have clicks 2. Purple fringing at 0.95, 1.4 in high contrast lighting, a bright sky in background and a dense tree in foreground. 3. Although I love using manual focus, not many people are interested to use it specially when you hand over the camera to someone for taking your pic. I must say with focus peaking on xt2, using it is a breeze
