Mitakon Zhongyi 35mm f/0.95 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing an incredibly fast maximum aperture with a standard focal length, this silver Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 Mark II Lens from Mitakon Zhongyi is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-M-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 56mm equivalent focal length. The bright f/0.95 maximum aperture offers increased control over depth of field and focus, as well as benefitting working in low or difficult lighting conditions. Maintaining a high degree of image quality throughout the aperture range, a sophisticated optical design features both low dispersion and high refractive index elements to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing.

Balancing the optical components is a robust all-metal lens body that facilitates a smooth manual focus design along with a manual de-clicked aperture ring for smooth, silent exposure adjustment. Depth of field and distance scales are also featured on the lens barrel to aid working with pre-focusing techniques.

A versatile standard prime, this 35mm lens is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-M-mount mirrorless cameras where it provides a 56mm equivalent focal length.
An extremely fast f/0.95 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also avails considerable control over depth of field for selective focus applications.
The 11 elements, eight groups optical design incorporates one extra-low dispersion element, two extra-high refractive index elements, and three high refractive index elements to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and fringing, as well as contribute to a high degree of sharpness and resolution.
Manual focus design is complemented by both depth of field and distance scales for utilizing pre-focusing and zone focusing techniques.
De-clicked aperture ring offers silent, smooth adjustment that is well-suited to video applications.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Metal lens barrel offers increased durability, yet remains lightweight at 1 lb.

    Mitakon Zhongyi 35mm f/0.95 reviews

Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 Mark II Lens for Canon EF-M (Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from fast and sharp I had been eyeing this lens for some time, debating whether to purchase it or wait for the Samyang 35 1.4 that is coming out. Another question was to order from B&H as a special order or direct from Zhongyi. When I saw B&H had it in stock I hit the purchase button and have been really happy I did. I really needed something in this focal range and most of what I shoot is street photography and portraits and most of that is after the sun goes down, so this was the perfect lens. Works excellent with the focus peaking on the M3/EVF-DC1 and the lens is smooth out of the box. If you've been a shooter since the days of manual focus, you will like the feel of this lens. If you like blown out backgrounds, this is your lens. Compare the look to a 50mm 1.2 on a full frame. Sharp wide open with some vignetting, but I like it. Lens is well made, packaging is very cool. Only two negatives which are no big deal, I would prefer to have aperture click stops, I use a piece of gaffer tape to keep it where I want it, and I wish it came with a hood. I bought the Kalt 55mm metal lens hood and it works perfect. Highly recommend it too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Lens: Paired with Canon M5 As the reviews above mine state, this lens is just beautiful. It's design and it's ability to literally make you want to keep shooting even the most mundane subject that might not even make it into post-processing, but you'll be having such a good time with it that it doesn't matter. It's weight distribution when mounted to a M5 is excellent and it feels extremely durable. It does take some practice nailing that f/.95, even with focus peaking, but you won't want to put it down and you'll inevitably gain the familiarity with it. Ugh, I gotta go, I need to play it now that I'm typing about it. It's an addictive lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A one-trick pony? OK, let's be frank, we didn't buy the utterly amazing EOS M5 for the EF-M lenses. I was a first-day adopter of the M5 with SN# 63. This is the most fun one can have with a camera, in my opinion. I have been using Leica 35 & 50mm M lenses on it since December 2016, via the Fotodiox lens adapters, getting stunning results, making the M5 a smaller, lighter 24 mpxl Leica. I learned that the 35mm became my go-to lens on the M5, but the contrast and zip wasn't quite there. After some encouraging reviews, I decided to give the Speedmaster a try. (Does it make the M5 equal to a Noctilux equipped M10?) I was prepared for the worst, but that was unfounded. I'd already been manual focusing with the Leica lenses and really, I could care less if the EXIF data wasn't there. I Only shoot manual exposures @ ISO 100, and I'm quite capable of recalling my f #. The Speedmaster turns the M5 into an imaging monster. At my day job, I'm a studio photographer, working with EOS 5DsR and 1Dx's and a dozen L lenses. I print with 2 44 Canon iPF 8400's. After 40+ years of shooting, I know a decent image when I see it. This Speedmaster tickles the M5 image sensor with detail the Leica M's could not have hoped for. This is NOT a one trick pony .095 lens. It's the ONLY lens I need. Wide open, you bet, it's the dreamy, creamy wonder-lens....but stopped down to f 2 and it becomes the color and detail funnel. As other reviewers state, if you are not used to manual lenses for focus and aperture, skip this lens. It weighs more than any EOS-M lens and it will force you to THINK...which means you are merely a camera owner, not a photographer. This is not an action lens, this is a fantastic paint brush for those who know how to write with light. It's a niche a Leica is. Do not buy it for it's amazing speed, but for what this brush can do for your paintings. Do not consider this lens...leave it for just a few owners, to have all the fun and let them squeal at their screens in delight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! The lens works perfectly on my Canons M3 and M5 and it delivers pictures that I am very happy about. It feels solid and a heavy in comparison to for instance the native canon ef-m lenses. The built quality is very nice. The aperture ring is without distinct stops, which I personally do not mind at all. The focusing ring turns smoothly, not too easy and not too hard, exactly as one would expect from a good quality lens. I also bought a metallic lens hood to both protect the lens and avoid flare, which I also recommend. The picture quality is excellent. With the lens widely open, the picture is a bit soft, which is to be expected. In lower-light situation this natural softness of the widest aperture is compensated by the fact that the extreme brightness of the lens allows for shorter exposure times and lower iso, which improves the picture quality. A good level of detail is maintained and all apertures. The shallow depth of field at the maximum aperture ensures that the subject in focus is nicely isolated and it appears very sharp in contrast with the background. It is however important to use the camera's built-in features such as magnification and focus peaking to make sure that the plane of focus is really when one wants to have it. With the really shallow depth of field this lens offers (especially on close distances), it is very easy to miss the intended focus point. Oh yes, the closest focus distance is only 35 cm, which is lovely too. The enclosed picture was taken with Canon M5. Because the lens is fully mechanical, you need to go into the menu of the camera and allow the camera to shoot without lens attached. The same thing you need to do if you shoot any other mechanical lens, for instance old lenses from analog cameras via adapters. No big deal, youtube surely offers video or two on how to do it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens!! Gives me that full frame feeling when I shoot with the crop cameras! I've been trying to stop carry around my 6D esp on vacations, not because of the camera size or weight, but all the glass, once you've put the 70-200/24-105 and a few primes in your bag it gets a little crazy and not ideal on a long hike so I've been trying out my m-Camera, which is fine, but there's no EF-M lens that would compare to my 50mm 1.4... this does that! It's easy to use with focus peaking looks great, and NOW I have a way smaller kit option that is 1/4 the weight and roughly 3/4 as good as my full frame kit with this and a few of the EF-M lenses... which is a trade off I can live with esp. when hiking up a mountain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not for everyone, but a great lens for some applications. I purchased the Speedmaster 35mm f/0.95 based on some of the reviews and because I wanted a lens with very shallow depth of focus so I could blur the background effectively. I found this lens to be tack sharp where in focus even at f/0.95. and the backgrounds are nicely blurred as well. The lens construction is all metal - solid and, not surprisingly, quite heavy for its size. This is a specialty all manual lens. I find it great for portraits and images where shallow depth of focus is desired. I am using this lens on my Canon M5 camera. The Canon M5 must be set to enable "shoot without lens" to use this lens. Not for everyone, probably not for everyday, but a great lens to have in your bag of tricks none the less.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cosmetic Issues with every lens! I have had to exchange this lens three times and BH Photo has been gracious every time but it's getting old trying to find a copy that doesn't feel or look used. What's up with Zhongyi's quality control! Can't recommend the craftsmanship with the blemishes that plague these lenses from gouged and scratched metal to cleaning marks on the glass and Zhongyi Optics doesn't like to respond through any of their official social media channels. The company seems completely to neglect their Instagram and Facebook channels which makes customer service look absent. I'm probably going to keep the fourth copy and settle with it's blemishes but I ever had this issue with other manufacturers. The gear looked good out of the box with no surface issues. Not happy with Zhongyi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost perfect First I have to provide a caveat to my review that this lens evoked an emotional response in me - that's how much I like it but also the benchmark for the quality of my review - it's not scientific. The lens feel in the hand with the Canon M3 is perfect. You hear that alot about heavy glass but the balance is just fantastic. Not needing an adapter makes it the right length to get a good balance; it's so good when you hold it for the first time you'll probably utter out loud, huh, that guy was right... The lens is sharp and bright, probably not f/0.95 bright (see dxo mark's review) but brighter than Canon's glass for about the same money with no need for an adapter. Chroma is there and it is easily corrected for assuming you nailed your focus but here's the part that makes it not entirely perfect - lack of a focus confirmation. I'd have preferred having a focus confirmation chip as I wouldn't have to zoom in to confirm focus but that makes this lens a 99% out of a 100 in my book because if at f/0.95 you don't care if you're focused on the eye lash or the eye itself you could save yourself the money and get a much cheaper kit lens. If you want the photos you take to be as close to perfect as they can be this tool, while it takes extra effort, can help you achieve that. This, a mirror less camera and a very light weight tripod will get you some excellent photographs - totally recommend. And as an aside, if canon ever releases real physical sensor stabilization this will be even more useful for video too.
