Mitakon Zhongyi 20mm f/2 4.5x Super Macro Reviews

Great Super Macro

This lens produces a sharp image with good contrast at high magnification, and at a very fair price. But with the high magnification comes a very shallow depth of field (a law of physics, not a fault of the lens). Even for a very experienced macro photographer this will pose a challenge. As I started using this lens to take photos of microscopic shells (which can barely be seen with the naked eye). I knew that the only way to get the entire sand-grain sized object in focus it would be with focus stacking, but I had to learn that my cheap focusing rail was not up for the task at this dimension. With this lens (20mm) and an APS-C sensor, at F5.6 one needs 34 shots stepped at 0.03mm (based on DOF 0.06mm and 50% overlap) top get the entire grain of sand in focus. The depth of field is a LOT thinner than a razor blade! With other words, don't buy this lens without also purchasing a high precision focusing rail with micro-adjustment that can reliably duplicate steps in the range of 0.02mm (in case you want to open the aperture a little more)! Otherwise, just use one of those nice marco lenses that go to 2x, and crop out from that. It will be much easier to use, and the cropped image will have much more depth of field. Use the 20mm only if you can stack with precision and you want an image of the face of an ant, or perhaps just the eye. 4x magnification is that powerful!

I Wish I Could Return It

Normally, I Don't Bother With Bad Reviews. But This One Item Got Me. I Got It. I Opened It. I Tested It For Functionality. It Works. Then, I Threw Out The Box And Put It Away. Now, I Finally Actually Used It For The Intended Purpose Of Macro Photography. For That Purpose, It Is Virtually Useless. It Says Manual Focus. But There Isn't Actually Any Focus Other Than Moving The Camera Around. There Is A Zoom Ring And An F-stop Ring. The Problem With That Is That Even On F16, The Focus Is Very Limited. So, You'd Want To Do Focus Stacking. But That Is Virtually Impossible When You Can't Adjust The Focus Without Moving The Camera. Had I Kept The Box I Would Have Returned It. Oops.

question

how do I get the lens cap off ?
Asked by: Ruth
The front lens cap is a push-on type cap that you can pull with your fingers. The rear lens cap is a bayonet-type cap that will twist off in one direction and twist back on in the other.

does it works on A6000 crop sensor camera?
Asked by: Zanio
Yes, the Mitakon Zhongyi 20mm f/2 4.5x Super Macro Lens for Sony E, B&H # MIK20MF2SE, would be compatible for use on the Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera, which uses the Sony E-mount lens mount. As with all lenses used on the Sony a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera, if you are comparing the angle of view of the lens to the same lens used on a full-frame camera, you would have to multiply the focal length by 1.5x to find the full-frame equivalent. As such, the Mitakon Zhongyi 20mm f/2 4.5x Super Macro Lens for Sony E used on the Sony a6000 would be the equivalent of a 30mm lens used on a full-frame camera.
