Nikon D5600 overview

  • 1Description

Compact, capable, and connected, the Nikon D5600 is a sleek DSLR that blends multimedia imaging capabilities with versatile wireless technology. Centered around a 24.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor, the camera offers a sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600 to benefit working in an array of lighting conditions, and the sensor and processor combination also supports continuous shooting up to 5 fps for working with moving subjects. It is able to record full HD 1080p video, supports up to 60 fps, and allows you to create time-lapse movies in-camera.

While slender in stature, the D5600 does feature a large 3.2" 1.037m-dot rear LCD touchscreen, and utilizes a vari-angle design to better facilitate working from high and low shooting angles. Additionally, SnapBridge is also featured, which can utilize Bluetooth low energy technology for wireless sharing of photos to your mobile device, including automatic transferring of resized images between the camera and your mobile device for seamless online sharing. Wi-Fi with NFC is featured, too, for larger file transfers, such as movies, to a linked device.

24.2MP DX-Format Sensor and EXPEED 4 Processor
The 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 processor work together to produce overall high image quality with notable detail, dynamic range, color accuracy, and low-light sensitivity to ISO 25600. Additionally, the sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to acquire the greatest amount sharpness and detail from subjects. The EXPEED 4 processor also enables a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including support for Full HD 1080p movie recording and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps.
SnapBridge Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Supporting a wealth of sharing and tagging possibilities, the D5600 features built-in SnapBridge connectivity to permit seamless transferring of imagery to a mobile device. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology enables communication between the camera and a smart device, and allows for automatic low-resolution image transfers as you shoot. SnapBridge requires a one-time setup and also works in conjunction with Nikon Image Space for backing up files and sharing imagery, and can also tag transferred images with date, time, and location info for keeping track of your journey. Additionally, once linked, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.

In addition to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with NFC is also available, and allows for wirelessly sharing both full-resolution photos and movies to smartphones or tablets. SnapBridge will automatically switch between the two technologies for a seamless wireless workflow.
Multi-CAM 4800DX Autofocus Sensor
Benefitting the high image quality is an apt AF system that employs 39 distinct AF points, including nine cross-type sensors, to quickly acquire focus in a range of lighting conditions, from -1 to +19 EV. A unique 3D-tracking mode utilizes the 2,016-pixel RGB sensor, typically reserved for exposure metering, in order to maintain sharp focus on moving subjects. To better suit specific subject matter when working in AF-A or AF-C focus modes, Dynamic-area AF mode allows you to choose from 9, 21, or 39-point arrays for enhanced subject tracking and recognition, even if the subject briefly leaves the frame. Single-point AF, 3D-tracking, and Auto-area AF modes are also available.

When working in live view, for either still or movie shooting, a contrast-based AF system is employed to acquire focus precisely and can function in continuous, full-time servo mode to better suit working with moving subjects. Additionally, four AF-area modes are available when working in live view: Face-priority AF, Wide-area AF, Normal-area AF, and Subject-tracking AF.
Body Design
  • Rear 3.2" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD serves as an intuitive means for navigating settings menus and playback, as well as when shooting in live view. The screen also uses a vari-angle design to benefit working from high, low, and front-facing angles.
  • Eye-level pentamirror optical viewfinder provides a natural means for composing stills.
  • The rear touchscreen can be used while shooting with the optical viewfinder, and allows you to choose the focus point or adjust exposure settings. Additionally, during playback, the touchscreen enables navigating your imagery using a frame advance bar for quickly scrolling through numerous photos and movies.
  • Built-in pop-up flash can be used to provide additional illumination when working in low-light conditions. A hot shoe is also available for working with an optional external flash.
Full HD Movie Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported in 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 fps frame rates, as well as HD 720p and SD 480p in multiple frame rates, in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. During recording, full-time autofocus can be employed, with face-detection and subject-tracking capabilities, for ensured sharpness with a wide variety of subject types.

A built-in stereo microphone can be used to record high-quality sound or, alternatively, a 3.5mm microphone input is integrated into the body design to support the use of an external microphone for enhanced control over audio recordings.

Additionally, Time-Lapse Movie recording is also supported for producing creative portrayals of subjects changing over periods of time. This mode will automatically format your image sequences into movie files for seamless playback.
AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens
Included with the camera body is the versatile AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens; a wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens providing a 27-210mm equivalent focal length range. One aspherical element and one extra-low dispersion element are integrated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations while helping to improve overall image sharpness and clarity. Vibration Reduction image stabilization is also incorporated into the design to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to better suit working with longer focal lengths and in low-lighting conditions. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor ensures quiet, smooth, and precise autofocus performance that is well-suited for working with fast-moving subjects and for video applications.
Other Camera Features

Nikon D5600 reviews

D5600 DSLR Camera with 18-140mm Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again This is my first DSLR, but I have spent a lot of time with a D7100 that I checked out from school. Having learned the basics on that camera, the D5600 is a pleasure to work with and the convenience of an articulating touch screen (major selling point for me) cannot be overstated. I don't have a particular style and like to shoot everything from astrophotography to portraiture to short videos for cinemagraphs. This is a great prosumer level little guy. It is tiny and so sleek! being at this level is has a very light body and for those of you that want an ultralight DSLR that's about as small as they get this is a great option. I purchased with the 18-140 lens because I got used to shooting with it and really liked the VR functionality, but I also purchased a 40mm (50mm in reality, thanks to the crop sensor) and have been very happy with both lenses on this body. Do it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic little camera, highly recommended Lightweight body. Excellent DX sensor/image quality. Excellent handling, though the deep grip may take a little getting used to. I have relatively big hands so your results may vary. The AF is snappy & spot on it is a very noticeable upgrade from the D3xxxx series that I've tried. Although the buttons are small and take away from overall ergonomics, the touchscreen more than makes up for it. The touchscreen makes changing settings, focusing, viewing & scrolling through photos and menus a breeze. Combined with a customizable My Menu, the camera is very quick & easy to handle any situation. In my view, the articulating screen is almost mandatory for anyone with children & pets, which is the main reason I chose the D5600 series over the D7200. The reason I chose the D5600 over the D5500 is Snapbridge which enables my iPhone to Geotag photos automatically in the camera. I also like that it sends 2mb pics to my iPhone automatically via Bluetooth, though there seems to be a hit on battery life. I've read somewhere that live view focus tracking has improved over the D5500, though I can't validate that. The limited video I've taken, the focus seems to work reasonably well. I haven't tried time lapse so no comment on that feature. With the 18-140mm kit, it's reasonably lightweight and portable though it does become slightly front heavy. I do love the VR and focal range - it's a great zoom lens combo. My favorite is the D5600 with the 50mm 1.8 attached. This combination is feather weight, well balanced, and tidy makes for an outstanding walk around camera. The only real letdown that I've found so far is the limited buffer. Shooting JPEG + NEF, the bursts are limited to 5-7 frames before it slows to a crawl. This was the same issue with the D5500 & D7100 as well. The D5600 is a keeper. Excellent purchase experience with B&H as usual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great first DSLR camera! This was my first DLSR. I had it for about 2 months before upgrading, but it is what made me fall in love with photography. Build quality it good for a smaller camera but some of the heavier FX lenses may become loose. I recommend holding onto the lens vs the camera body to avoid this. The camera is in my girlfriends hands now with over 15,000+ shots on it within 8 months and is still working like a champ.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Camera for Price I own a d750, d90, d3100 and a d40 - I have purchased a d5100 for work at a previous job and I always liked that too. This time I decided to go for the d5600 for work. I typically document jobs in the field (landscaping and projects) and didn't need anything fancy. I like the touch screen and the kit 18-140. I like the newer display in the back. I think it's easy to get a visual for your settings at a glance - especially if you're a beginner and learning photography. As usual I shoot in Manual with auto ISO turned on. I find that I get the most consistent images this way as long as the ISO is low enough. Bottom line - Camera is very similar to other Nikons, Light and produces quality images and video. What's not to like?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1&1/2 years later Im @~35K actuations. Love it still. Held up well...no probs. Paired with the 35mm 1.8DX it cant be beat for size and weight and is giving me pictures as good as my D800 / 50mm 1.8 . Paired with the 80-300mm4.5 VR it cant be beat for walk-around nature / outdoor portraits etc.. and doesnt suck the fun out my day like lugging around a FF on a 200-500mm. But I also love it on my 200-500mm for the pixel density/crop.. I do wish it had autofocus fine tune, internal focus motor, etc, but I still find myself picking it up about a forth of the time over the D800 . The 18-140mm kit lens has failed to win me over, but I haven't given it much of a chance. I haven't found myself using the D5600 much for wide angle stuff, opting for the D800 and primes. All things aside, the sensor in this camera is why Im not afraid to pick it up. It might not have the fastest frame rate or low ISO performance, but under most shooting conditions this "cheap little camera" (with good glass on it) will produce IQ just as good as a pro camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Picked the lens first 18-140 I got the D5600 for my wife. A two-lens kit was out of the question--no way she would change lenses in the middle of a shoot. So I searched for akit that featured the 18-140. The smaller D5600 suited her better than the D7200.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first DSLR and I love it! Easy to set up and understand. Great Auto modes with scenes such as the common potrait, sports, landscape, pets, kids, etc. settings and easy to use in Aperture or Shutter mode as well. I have seen complaints about SnapBridge but it has worked perfectly for me. Pics are easily transfered to my iphone. The 18-140 mm lens is the perfect all around all day lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific all-purpose camera for this price range After 50 years of lugging around 35 pounds of 35mm film cameras and equipment, what a pleasure it is to play with Nikon's lightweight, finely-crafted, versatile digital camera/lens combination. I say play, because it's taken the work out of photography.
