The Bokeh Master

Delivering both smooth bokeh and fine sharpness, the FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS from Sony is a short-telephoto prime featuring a unique and sophisticated optical design. Separating itself from other portrait-length lenses, this 100mm f/2.8 features Smooth Trans Focus (STF) technology, which uses an apodization filter to realize notably smooth bokeh with rounded out-of-focus highlights in both the foreground and background.

Smooth Trans Focus

  • Optical design incorporates an apodization (APD) element that helps to improve the quality of bokeh. This element, which resembles a radially graduated ND filter that tapers from clear in the center to denser around the edges, produces more circular out-of-focus highlights for more pleasing selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.
  • An aperture range of f/2.8 to f/20 is available, however the implementation of the apodization filter renders this range as T5.6 to T22.
  • A rounded 11-blade diaphragm further contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing shallow depth of field techniques.

G Master Optics

G Master lenses prioritize sharpness and bokeh quality by featuring advanced optical designs and specialized elements.
  • One extra-low dispersion (ED) element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations while one aspherical element controls spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness.
  • Optical layout has also been designed to reduce peripheral highlight distortion due to vignetting in order to achieve rounder out-of-focus highlights in both the foreground and background.
  • A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.

Autofocus and Macro Switching

  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor AF system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Internal focusing design offers more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation.
  • Macro switching ring allows you to choose between two focusing ranges: 2.8' to infinity or a closer range of 1.9-3.3'.
  • Maximum magnification of 0.25x at minimum focus allows for near-macro capabilities for true close-up detail shooting.
  • Customizable focus hold button on lens barrel can be used to hold the focusing position, or can be set in-camera to control a variety of additional lens functions.

Handling and Physical Design

  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • A dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

ISO200 f5.6 1/400s. Lens is very sharp with great subject separation. Lens balances well on the A7RIII. Auto focus is fast and accurate. I am very happy with this purchase from B & H.

I've had this lens for about 1.5 years... It is my go-to portrait lens, for gorgeous bokeh and sharp images. I will say that there is a learning curve, but once you get through that, it really shines!!

I picked up this lens to use for product photography on models, and it's perfect. You can be taking amazing portraits and with a quick flip of the macro ring you can get nice and up close to your subject. It's good for what i am using it for ( Jewelry), but definitely need studio lighting or full day lighting conditions. I don't feel the image stabilization on the lens really help much wish i was brighter, maybe if the STF was half the strength it is now it would make with lens really something amazing.

Great Portrait and Macro lens for flowers!

Spring is here and I was looking for a lens to do (pseudo) macro flower photography. (Dislike insects, so not interested in real 1:1 macro photography anyway). I was debating between Sony 90mm and this 100mm. Wanted the STF bokeh, but worried about the loss of light (i.e., you get f2.8 bokeh, but really light transmission is only at f5.6).  Having seen the samples of 90mm, decided that it may be too sharp for portrait, and since I already have an 85mm/1.8, the 90mm may be too close in focal length to be useful.  Read around even more and saw a comment from somewhere that you could add a diopter lens (+2, like the Canon 500D close up lens) to improve the magnification from 1:4 to 1:2.  Did exactly that, bought the 100mm STF and the Canon 500D close-up lens to try. (Thanks to B&H for the great return policy). Took both the lens out for spring flower photo-walk... No looking back! I just loved the photos!  Now the 100/2.8 STF alone is Fantastic for portrait! But the 100/2.8 STF paired with a Canon 500D (+2) close up lens is just GREAT for macro (if you are shooting flowers)!!

This is my first Sony G lens, I bought because of the quality and sharpness but still my expectation was low until I got it in my hands. I went nuts, its amazing.

One of a Kind!

It's easy to overlook any modern prime that only starts off with a minimum light capability of f/5.6 or T5.6. That's where too many make a big mistake. You can always add light but you cannot add the STF with an apodization filter like only this lens provides. The images straight out of camera have some of the best colors and contrast I have ever seen in a lens. It is a very sharp lens that separates the background so smoothly. It is a specialty lens that most might feel is made for portraits, but they would be wrong. Although not an exclusive "close-up" macro lens, it can be used for macro work and give those images something that the other macro lenses could never achieve. For me this lens is one of the most under appreciated tools available. Like any specialty lens, it takes some time learning all the nuances and capabilities.

A very special portrait lens

This lens is truly different and a great complement to the other two G-master telephoto lenses (85 GM and 135 GM). It takes a bit of effort to learn how to best use its unique apodization filter and the impact it has on light transmission, but once you do the results are incredible. Added bonus: the short minimal focus distance which turns this lens into a useful close focus lens. Great lens!

Hi. This is not a macro lens. It does have a feature for closer focus, and I like using it to photograph flowers. But it is NOT a macro lens.

question

How would the bokeh of this lens wide open compare with the 85/1.4GM?

Softer and creamier than the 1.4 which I own. But at a cost of lower light transmission. Not as good in low light situations.

Can u use this for birding if the bird is close?
Asked by: Peggy
The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens has a minimum focus distance of 1.87 feet (57 cm) and can focus out to infinity. As long as the bird you wish to photograph is within the above distance ranges and the focal length is adequate for your framing needs, then yes, the Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens would be compatible for your birding usage needs.

How is the sharpness and bokeh of this vs the 90mm macro? Assuming good lighting for both.
Asked by: James
This 100mm lens is a GM lens--Sony's top line of lenses; the 90mm is a G lens, the next tier down, so the 100mm would be a better lens.
