Sony 85mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

An ideal portrait-length prime, the FE 85mm f/1.8 from Sony is a sleek short-telephoto lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits this lens's use in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques. The nine elements, eight groups lens construction includes one extra-low dispersion element to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color accuracy. Benefitting the optical design is a simple, intuitive physical layout that incorporates a customizable focus hold button and a physical AF/MF switch. The double linear AF motor itself affords quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance, and this motor also offers snappy manual focus performance for fine-tuned control.

Prime portrait-length lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used on APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture allows for fine-tuned control over depth of field and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the optical design and helps to limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for heightened image clarity and color accuracy.
Double linear autofocus motor delivers smooth, precise, and near silent focusing performance to benefit both stills and video applications.
The focus hold button on the lens barrel can be used to hold the focusing position, or can be set in-camera to control a variety of additional lens functions. Also, the lens has an AF/MF switch for tactile control over the focus mode.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony 85mm f/1.8 reviews

FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 103.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lense I am adding the Sony system to my Pentax that I have been using since my start in photography. I wanted to add to the Sony system but did not want to get into the GM lense series which are quite expensive. When Sony released the FE 85mm 1.8 it was a good way to add a lense to my A6000 at a reasonable cost. The lense has preform beyond my expectations. This is a full frame lens but I have not notice any problems using it on my crop sensor camera. The 85mm is sharp even at 1.8 and is very fast focusing on my A6000. This is a excellent lens for any Sony camera without getting in the GM lenses in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Autofocus I absolutely love this lens. I've only been able to shoot with it once (as I got it yesterday) but the results I have gotten with it far exceeded my expectations. Eyes are so sharp with this and I can see every detail. The weight is beautifully balanced with my a7sii body. The manual focus ring is stiffer than I imagined but it makes it incredibly easy to find the perfect focal plane when shooting wide open. I've never written a review before but this lens is so good I had to do it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens for portrait and video work. I have tested many high end lenses from Nikon and Canon and I have to say this Sony lens is one of the best in terms of sharpness and build quality for this price point. It has great color fidelity when shooting with my Sony a7RIII. I can't believe the video it can capture as well, with great auto focus when the subject moves around, and very quiet. I wish I could afford more Sony prime lenses, but you all know they are proud of their product and not inexpensive. Not the fastest auto focus in video but reasonable. None of my Canon lenses with an adapter can do this video work except in the manual mode. Video will be my prime use for this lens. I really love this lens, no complaints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Brainer For me, this lens is a 'no brainer' or 'must have' lens for Sony FE system: 1) sharp even fully open 2) contrasty, with pleasing rendering 3) subjects stand out while bokeh (out of focus blur) is pleasing 4) relatively compact and light and affordable (compared to 85mm F 1.4 GM lens and zooms) 5) AF is quick and reliable 6) seems well built 7) relatively free of CA, Distortion, lens flare and vignetting I have been very pleased with image quality and do not have any complaints. If you need this focal length, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional glass for the price I'm not sure what's going on with some of the other reviews here, but I can only assume they received a lemon of a lens. At f/1.8, this thing is absolutely razor sharp across around 80% of the frame, with a bit of softening at the edges. Stopped down, it's excellent across the frame. Compared to the Batis 85mm, this lens is at least as sharp in my testing. There is some longitudinal CA at wide apertures, but it's no worse than the vast majority of fast 85mm lenses and only at certain focus distances can it be a little distracting. In most situations it's not an issue at all. Bokeh has some contrast and can have a slight ring outline in certain situations, but overall is quite nice. AF is very quick in good light, and a bit slower in low light. On the A7 II, there can be a bit of hunting in very low light, but nothing out of the ordinary for FE lenses. In all, I find it to be an outstanding lens for the price, and even not considering price it's really very good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value I give this 5 stars when considering what I get for what I paid. I have a Sony A7r2 and am used to the Sony 24-70/2.8 FE GM. This lens has a beautiful bokeh that really makes headshots/portraits beautiful as an image. The auto-focus is not as fast or accurate as with my other lens, it is silent but tends to search a little now and then. I'd guess 8/10 shots it works find and as hoped. 2/10 shots need a tiny bit more time to get itright, and that's ok for my usage. And this lens is VERY SHARP. I love its clarity. Oh, and it is lightweight. Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did I need this lens? I'm not a professional. I'm using the lens on a A7Rii and already had the 24-70 f4 and 70-300 G and 35 f2.8. Why would I need this? I borrowed the 85 Zeiss Batis and liked the results but the price was more than I wanted to spend on a lens that won't get much use. But since the price point on the sony was so appealing I decided to get it and determine once and for all whether I needed an 85 f1.8. Soon after getting the lens I was asked to photograph the staff of a non profit : portraits for their website and a great opportunity to see what the lens could do. Again, I'm not a professional but to my eye, the portraits were the best I've done and when the results were submitted to the subjects, their response was extremely enthusiastic. So I discovered I did need this lens; no portraits I've done previously looked as good. I'll leave it to others to comment on all the image quality fine points and the construction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Performer. I have an a7R III and the a7 II. I purchased the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 lens and the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 Lens, as I was not sure which one would serve my purpose better. I shoot Fashion/Portraits. This is the comparison : 85mm f1.8 vs 85mm f/1.4 1. Silent focus Noisy focus 2. Medium size and weight Twice the size, three times the weight 3. Very fast focus in good light Very fast focus in good light 4. Very fast focus in poor light Slower focus in poor light 5. Very rarely "focus hunts" "Focus hunts" in poor light 6. Sharp center image at f1.8 Razor sharp center image at f1.4 7. Semi blurred edges at f1.8 Sharp and detailed edges at f1.4 Conclusion : The Ultra Sharp 85mm f/1.4 has far superior optics when seen at 100%, making it the perfect choice when photographing anything that requires edge to edge sharpness. The average sharpness of the 85mm f/1.8 make it the perfect lens for Mid to Full portraits as it does not enhance the imperfections in the human skin. The edge softness can be overcome by shooting at a smaller aperture if required. For everything else...................there's Photoshop
