An ideal portrait-length prime, the FE 85mm f/1.8 from Sony is a sleek short-telephoto lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits this lens's use in low-light conditions and also affords extensive control over depth of field when working with selective focus techniques. The nine elements, eight groups lens construction includes one extra-low dispersion element to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing for greater clarity and color accuracy. Benefitting the optical design is a simple, intuitive physical layout that incorporates a customizable focus hold button and a physical AF/MF switch. The double linear AF motor itself affords quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance, and this motor also offers snappy manual focus performance for fine-tuned control. Finally, the lens is designed to be dust- and moisture-resistant for increased protection.

Does anyone have experience using this lens for video work? I like this focal length for interviews on my A7iii.
Asked by: Greg
Fast focusing and quiet as well from when I had this same set up. I’m sure new firmware updates are out with eye tracking improvements. I’m over on Fuji now. Never looked back.

This lens is one of the better and more cost effective portrait lenses. Bokeh on the A7III is beautiful and even holds up on higher megapixel cameras.

Is this just a portrait lens or can you use it ...

Is this just a portrait lens or can you use it for landscape photography as well?
Asked by: Kassie
The short answer is, yes, it can be used as a for landscape photography. You can use any lens for landscape photography. It all depends on what you are capturing and what composition you want. For indoors, it definitely does not work as a landscape lens. But outdoors, any lens can be used for landscape photography. When people refer to a lens as a good portrait lens or a good landscape lens, it doesn’t mean that lens cannot be used for one or the other. Most consider a good portrait lens, one that gives you a professional photography look. One that isolates the subject from the background. But this can be done with almost any lens except for the very wide ones because they distort the subject when using them up close to isolate the subject from the background.

Would I really benefit from owning this lens if I already own the Sony 27-70 2.8 GM and 70-200 2.8 GM?
Asked by: Celestino
If you are shooting portraits and want the best bokeh and sharpness, etc... then I would go with the 85mm. If you shoot occasional portraits, then you could stay with what you have.
