IRIX 15mm f/2.4 overview

  • 1Description

Offering a wide-angle perspective, and characterized by its premium exterior build, the 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens from Irix is a sophisticated prime lens designed for Nikon F-mount cameras. Benefitting the broad field of view is an advanced optical design that features aspherical, low-dispersion, and high-refractive index glass elements to control various aberrations and distortions, as well as maintain accurate and consistent color. A Neutrino coating is also utilized to control lens flare and ghosting and achieve a high degree of contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics, this 15mm f/2.4 makes use of a manual focus design for fine-tuned control, and incorporates a unique positive focus lock to secure the focusing position at any point for consistent, repeatable shooting. As the Blackstone version of this focal length, this lens is also distinguished by an aluminum and magnesium alloy exterior, engraved lens markings with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility, and extensive weather-sealing about the lens to permit working in harsh environments.

The Blackstone version of the 15mm f/2.4 lens features a durable aluminum and magnesium alloy housing and weather-resistant exterior along with inner seals, and an extra seal at the front element, to protect against dust and moisture intrusion. The metal exterior also distinguishes itself with an anti-scratch finish, and sports engraved focus distance and depth of field scales with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility when working in low-light conditions.
Wide-angle prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, this lens can also be used on DX models where it provides a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.
Two aspherical, three high-refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured within the optical design to limit both spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing and distortion, for improved clarity, sharpness, and even illumination.
A Neutrino coating has been applied to limit lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus designed is benefitted by a positive focus lock mechanism to secure your focus position at any point to limit unwanted shifting of focus.
A hard click stop indicates the infinity position on the focus ring for easy use in low-visibility conditions.
Large depth of field scale benefits using hyperfocal and pre-focus techniques.
Front of lens has 95mm-diameter filter threads and the rear of the lens accepts 30 x 30mm cut gel filters to lessen the likelihood of vignetting.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth bokeh.

IRIX 15mm f/2.4 reviews

15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A wonderful lens for the price I used this lens for night photography and it has far exceeded my expectations. It is sharp with little distortion. It is fast at 2.4 to capture the Milky Way and sharp for greater depth of field and light painting. The images were sharp and very pleasing. For the price you can not beat it. I liked the ease of focusing manually and the locking tab was a bonus.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Service from B and H but lens not so good I ordered this from B and H photo. The first copy I received had problems in the left corners and was decentered. I tried the same shot on a tripod all the way up to f16 and the image was never sharp. I did the same test with my 14-24 and the image was sharper everywhere at F3.2. Thank God I ordered this from B and H, I returned it and tried another copy, the second copy was worse. I ended up getting a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine lens for a nice price! I've had my 15mm Blackstone for 4+ months, and have been very happy with the lens for astrophotography. The copy I have, has proven to be very sharp across the frame. I'm a retired professional photographer (always Nikon), and the build of the lens is excellent. It is manual focus, but the handling is very smooth, and it feels well machined. I could only do better, by spending at least $1,000 more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded My Expectations I was returning to photograph a derelict house and wanted a lenswider then the Zeiss 21mm I used for interior shots on the first trip. I own the NIkon 14-24 f/2.8 but was wondering if there was a better option. I read a good, short review of this lens by Thom Hogan on The lens did not disappoint in any way. The build quality and attention to detail are top notch. Optical quality is better than expected. I was able to square up the interior shots and the resulting files required no correction in post processing. Color and contrast are up there with the best. I look forward to using the lens on Milky Way and star shots in August and landscapes in June. I contemplated the Blackstone versus FIrefly and decided on the Blackstone for the nominal price difference. I would not hesitate to recomend the Firefly for a tighter budget.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 bad copies in a row I purchased this lens from B and H Photo. The first on was sharp in the middle but was badly decentered and was not able to produce a sharp image on the left side all the way up to F16. I sent that on back to B and H who have excellent customer service and received a second one it had the same exact issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I’m impressed! After a ton of reviews and hesitation I pulled the trigger. I primarily shoot interiors for real estate. The Nikon 16-35/4 I’ve been using is very soft in the edges and a good deal of bowing along the edges also. On the first outing with the Irix 15mm I was very pleased. It’s short-ish, weight is good, and most importantly the image quality is very good. The vertices are surprisingly excellent. I just lock the focus ring at infinity and shoot away. Get one!
