Notepad-8FX Small-Format Analog Mixing Console with USB I/O and Lexicon Effects is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from usb picky and customer service absolutely terrible i'm a solo musician playing with tracks in las vegas 250 nites a year. ths mixer replaces a bose tonematch, while this mixer sounds better than the bose the usb feature [i use for track playback] is faulty, on some of my tracks, all high quality WAV files it cuts out one or more of the count in beats, making usb playback useless to me, though they work fine analog or with a beringer usb adapter. ive had 8 emails back and forth to customer service, provided them with tec info at naseum, they told me they we're working on the prob 2 months ago but i havent heard a thing. not a ding on B&H their service is great. But f your looking for a usb mixer for live use beware

Rated 3 out of 5 by from USB PROBLEMS i am a solo guitarist using backing trax from a small comp, so i wanted this mixer for the onboard usb interface to playback wav files, i also have used a bose tonematch [ok sounding] and a yamaha mg6fx [better sounding] but no USB. to my ears this notepad sounds as good as the yamaha and i like the master volume slider. The Bad: usb interface cuts off the count in clicks to many of my tracks, making it unusable i have downloaded and installed the latest drivers but still have the problem, when i run out of the headphone jack or use a behringer usb-analog audio converter to notepad all is fine, and i've tryed a new USB cable as well. Customer support from soundcraft has been fairly poor so far, everything they told me to do I already had done, and i had to repeat their questions in EVERY email such as comp brand/model#/specs and playback software it's as if they never read my first email which had ALL this information in it............we'll see...... i still have the box for rma. But i need to say the B&H staff always gets 5 stars

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zero noise and has updated drivers I have tried comparable Yamaha and Mackie models. I ended up with this SoundCraft. The noise level is zero. There is no noise at all, as if you were in outer space. Very clear recording.   I noticed the Mackie has a clear zero noise recording, but only if you don’t use the FX function of the mixer. The SoundCraft does not have that issue. It is clear with and without FX. I really love it!!   The company has updated Firmware and updated drivers on their website, I think they are digitally signed drivers, not sure since I disabled the digital signature check in my PC. What I’m trying to point out is that the mixer is newer than most other comparable mixers and does not have any issues.   One thing I wanted to mention is the control panel window that comes with the driver, for some reason, it starts whenever I restart the PC and this caused issues while recording. Seems I lose a channel when this panel starts, so I disabled the panel from my startup and problem solved.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Expected better from SoundCraft Bought this for my small B setup. Mic input 2 was DOA. The knobs also feel cheap. I expected better from soundcraft. I like the size and features, but reliability is paramount in a professional environment.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Expired Driver Certificates Don't purchase for a PC. The driver certificates have expired, company showed no interest in renewing their certificate so the driver would work. Waste of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Meh, expected better PREFACE: The USB interface is kind of pointless, and does not work very well. It also shares the ground with the mixer chassis, and is quite prone to creating ground loops. The Lexicon effects don't sound that good, and are of very limited use. This review looks at the rest of the mixer. If you are considering this for the USB interface or effects, don't buy this. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The Notepad 8 feels well built, and is very intuitive to use, except for the FX routing. I like the blue theme with the chrome input jacks. I'm happy that Soundcraft decided to go with Combo input jacks and save a small amount of space in the input section. The Union Jack design reminiscent of the UK flag, and a reminder that one should expect finesse and quality. I did notice that the plastics are flimsier and thinner than previous designs, like the Notepad Spirit. This is still a Soundcraft mixer, but it does reach the lower limit to what I would consider legendary Soundcraft workmanship. I liked the fact that it takes a DC supply, though I was dissapointed at the flimsiness of the power supply cable. I expected a thicker and sturdier cable. ROUTING OPTIONS: I was somewhat dissapointed by the lack of an effects send/return. It is possible to send the effects out the AUX jack, and return them to a stereo input, but I find this to not be too practical. the AUX/Master control is shared between the AUX input, the FX input section, and the FX to master section. It's impossible to have an external FX loop without affecting the internal Lexicon FX. The FX/AUX bus routing is counter-intuitive, and extremely limited. A very annoying issue is that the gain for the AUX send is not correctly marked on the silkscreen. Setting the FX Send knob to 0dB, and the AUX/Master to 0dB again, the signal coming out of the AUX jack is attenuated by 15 dB. INDICATORS and VU-METER: There is no power indicator. The only lights are the VU-meter. If there is no audio, you have to guess if it's a problem with the input signal or the mixer power -- a very poor design choice. The VU-meter's four levels are not particularly useful. There is enough room for a 10-level, or even 14-level VU-meter. This would have been far more useful. COMPACTNESS: The Notepad 8 from Soundcraft is not truly compact. There is a lot of space dedicated to the master channel and the FX section, and this makes the mixer much wider than it needs to be. With smart placement of controls, the Notepad 8 could have been 5 cm (2 in) narrower. I have attached an impression of how it would look. OUTPUT CONNECTIONS: The Master output is two XLR connectors. For a mixer this size, this is definitely overkill, and not very useful. Balanced TRS jacks would have made the Notepad 8 far more usable without sacrificing any functionality. TRS can more easily be adapted to RCA and XLR, than XLR can be adapted to RCA or TRS. MICROPHONE INPUTS: The inputs and pre-amps are, as expected, of decent quality. The three-band EQ is truly a joy, and a very smart design choice. Phantom power cannot be turned off. While this is not a deal-breaker, it is an odd choice. Clipping indicators are provided for each microphone input. The 100 dB SNR figure is not far from the truth. However, the preamps can apply so much gain, that, at the higher settings, white noise is audible on the output. The High-Z input works as expected, albeit at a much higher noise level. The High-Z switching is fully mechanical, and will click and pop while being engaged. Electronic switching would have been preferred. MONITORING AND GAIN: The level monitoring feels awkward to use. Oftentimes, I find the output level barely reaching 0dB, while the preamps indicate they are clipping. It's quite painful to correctly adjust the gain and know how much headroom is available. The 4-level VU-meter of the Master channel is limiting. This is another unfortunate design choice. LINE INPUTS: Nothing impressive. They work and have the same AUX routing options as the microphone inputs. I do feel that most of the time I need to have the gain set close to the maximum, which makes me wonder if the silkscreen marking on the gain knob are correct. USB INTERFACE: The USB interface is limited to 48KHz 16-bit. It is not useful for recording, and its SNR is quite poor compared to the rest of the mixer. The input channel is not implemented with USB selectors, as would be necessary for a USB Audio compliant device. Instead, Soundcraft's application is required to select the correct input. The USB will work without Soundcraft's proprietary drivers. but the control options render it only marginally useful. Pops and clicks are also normal. CONCLUSION: Soundcraft's experience and craftmanship is evident in the analog parts of the mixer. Unfortunately a number of poor design choices were made, which make this new Notepad series suited for a very narrow set of use cases. If you are looking for a well built mixer and are tired of Behringer's questionable audio quality, and budget is not a driving factor, then the Notepad 8 is a solid contender. This earns it the four stars of this review. On the other hand, excluding the USB and FX, Soundcraft commands a very high price for the features offered. There are plenty of alternatives which offer the same feature set and audio quality at a much more competitive price point. If you are considering this mixer for its USB and FX capabilities, then the rating you should take is one star. You are overpaying and getting a paperweight. I believe that Soundcraft put too much emphasis on the USB and Lexicon effects, at the detriment of flexibility. Having used other Soundcraft compact mixers in the past, I find the Notepad 8 to be severely gilded, albeit more of a toy than a creativity powerhouse. EPILOGUE: One use case that this mixer completely misses is routing a guitar through an effects loop. It's possible to pre-amplify the guitar signal, split it through the AUX bus to two separate effects, and returning them through one of the stereo inputs. Unfortunately, given the clumsiness of the FX/AUX routing, this is not practical.
