Nikon WX 10x50 Overview

The culmination of a century of experience, Nikon's 10x50 WX IF Binocular brings together a wide array of technologies and materials to produce an optic that is engineered to provide outstanding performance for astronomy, birding, or nature watching.

Optically, the WX utilizes phase-corrected Abbe-Koenig prisms, extra-low dispersion (ED) lead- and arsenic-free glass, and broadband fully multicoated optics that work together to correct a wide variety of issues that are intrinsic to roof prism binoculars and produce the richest and most accurate views possible. Views through the WX IF are free from chromatic aberrations and astigmatism, colors are rendered accurately, and brightness, sharpness, and clarity are greatly improved. Added to this impressive performance is a field-flattener lens system that eliminates distortion across the entire ultra-wide field of view—especially at the edges. Its generous field of view helps to mitigate the distracting hand shake common with higher-power optics when holding them for long periods of time, or the discomfort that can occur when glassing on or near the water.

To ensure the sharpest views possible, the WX is built with a helical focusing mechanism on each individually focusing eyepiece. Eschewing the conventional center focusing system not only allows precise focusing for any user, but it also ensures the integrity and longevity of its waterproofing. The helical mechanism moves the eyepieces forward and back without rotating the eyepiece lenses, maintaining a centered optical axis that enables even more clarity and sharpness. A wide exit pupil will completely cover most users' pupils when they are fully dilated in dark or low-light conditions, while the comfortable eye relief and six-position twist-up eyecups ensure that, even while sporting eyewear, users can enjoy the remarkably wide field of view without vignetting in all lighting conditions for an immersive observational experience.

Thoughtfully designed for comfort and durability, the chassis is made of a lightweight and impact-resistant magnesium alloy that is wrapped with a slip-resistant protective rubber armor. Ergonomically positioned textured palm pads improve grip and in-hand comfort. To withstand extreme environmental conditions, the optical tubes are nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging. For a more comfortable fit in the hand, Nikon employs the Abbe-Koenig prism configuration, which allows for slimmer optical tubes versus conventional roof prisms—without sacrificing performance. The elongated prisms also distribute the weight more evenly to give it a comfortable balance. Weighing in at a hefty 5.5 pounds, some users may experience fatigue while holding the WX during long observation sessions, so Nikon includes a tripod mounting adapter that was specifically designed for this chassis, and which attaches to tripods and heads via a 1/4"-20 mount. For safe transport and storage the WX comes with a hard carrying case outfitted with a custom-cut foam lining to hold the binocular and accessories.

Optical Performance
  • Powerful 10x magnification allows for detailed observations of distant subjects
  • Large 50mm objective lenses boost light-gathering ability for improved performance in challenging conditions, such as during the pre-dawn and late evening hours
  • Compact Abbe-Koenig roof prism system
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings compensate for internal phase shifts, improving resolution and contrast
  • Extra low-dispersion (ED) glass corrects chromatic aberrations, which cause color fringing, and improves clarity, contrast, and resolution
  • Broadband fully multicoated optics improve light transmission, color rendition, contrast, and clarity across the entire visual spectrum
  • Field-flattener lens system eliminates curvature distortion at the edges of the field of view
  • Eyepiece lenses are engineered to eliminate astigmatism and comas to improve sharpness, clarity, and contrast
  • Ultra-wide 76° apparent angle of view
  • 472' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration
  • Abbe-Koenig prisms allow for a slimmer optical tube and greater in-hand balance without sacrificing performance
  • Individual eyepiece focusing enables ultra-precise focusing for any user, with etched indicators for repeatability
  • Helical focusing system allows eyepieces to move forward and back without rotating, ensuring the optical axis does not change to improve focusing sharpness
  • -6/+5 dioptric correction allows users to compensate for individual optical prescriptions for sharper views
  • Broad 58-78mm interpupillary distance adjustment range enables easy use by a wide variety of users
  • Twist-up, six-position click-stop rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • 55mm objective filter threads (P=0.75) allow the use of optional filters, such as neutral density or polarizing, to enhance the viewing experience
  • Comfortable 15.3mm eye relief allows users with eyewear to see the entire field of view without vignetting
  • 5mm exit pupil ensures complete coverage for most users when their pupils are fully dilated in low-light conditions

MAGNIFICENT VIEW!

This Nikon 10x50 WX IF Binocular is a MASTERPIECE! What can I say after 50yrs of glassing and over 100 sets of binoculars, many High-End brands owned, for stargazing and sky sweeping, these are by far my absolute favorite, they give the most POWERFUL natural WIDE view I've ever experienced in a glass, so glad I own a set alongside next to my Leica 12x50 HD PLUS, and the NOCTAVID 8x42 Green set binoculars :)

whats the Benefit

I don't see the benefit; it's too heavy to use in the field, despite having only 10x magnification and a 50mm lens diameter. The minimum focus distance is 20 meters.

What is the replacement Nikon binocular for the 10x50 WX IF model?
Asked by: Gregory
After Nikon discontinued the Nikon 10x50 WX IF Binocular they did not replace it with a suitable replacement. My suggestion would be the Swarovski 10x50 EL50 Binocular (B&H# SW10X50ELG)

How do you focus these bad boys? The way I understand it is you focus each ocular at a fixed target. once the left and right ocular are adjusted perfectly to your eyes..thats it..(?). what happens if you want to zero in on a subject 80 yards closer (or further) from your zero'ed in subject.. do you have to recalibrate each ocular again?
Asked by: jordan
You asked (Am i correct in assuming then that following a moving object , which changes distances sporadically from one moment to the next would move too quickly for this particular bino to keep up with then?) You are correct, Focusing these on the fly isn't practical.
