Nikon W300 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its tough exterior, the black Nikon COOLPIX W300 is a sleek point-and-shoot featuring a reinforced physical design, along with apt multimedia imaging capabilities. Designed for adventures, and even everyday mishaps, the camera is waterproof-rated for depths up to 100' as well as shockproof for falls from up to 7.9' high and freezeproof for temperatures down to 14°F. In regard to imaging, a high-resolution 16MP BSI CMOS sensor benefits both stills shooting as well as video recording, with the ability to shoot continuously up to 7 fps, record video at UHD 4K/30p, and produce low noise imagery with a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400. A 5x optical zoom lens spans wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, and Vibration Reduction helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery. Additionally, the W300 also incorporates SnapBridge wireless connectivity, which uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for seamlessly sharing imagery and remotely controlling the camera from a linked device. Built-in GPS is also available for geotagging your imagery in-camera.

Rugged Design
The W300 is designed to withstand a wide variety of conditions, ranging from harsh climates to everyday mishaps:
  • Waterproof-rated to IPX8 for use underwater to depths of 100' / 30m (JIS Class 8)
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F / -10°C
  • Shockproof-rated to MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock for falls from 7.9' / 2.4m high
  • Dustproof to protect the internal components of the camera
16MP BSI CMOS Sensor
Featuring a 16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor, the W300 is capable of recording high-resolution stills and UHD 4K/30p video with low noise and high clarity. The sensor also affords a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400, for working in a variety of lighting conditions, and a continuous shooting rate of 7 fps to suit photographing moving subjects.
NIKKOR 5x Optical Zoom Lens and Vibration Reduction
Spanning wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, the 5x optical zoom lens covers a 24-120mm equivalent range to suit photographing a wide array of subject types. Benefitting the lens's reach, optical VR (Vibration Reduction) helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld, and Electronic VR is available to help steady movie footage while moving.
SnapBridge Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and GPS
SnapBridge wireless connectivity uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to permit wireless sharing of images to a linked mobile device, as well as the ability to remotely control the camera from your smartphone or tablet. Built-in GPS also lets you geotag your imagery while shooting, and the camera also features an eCompass, altimeter, depth gauge, and barometer to record the environmental data of your shoot.
Body Design
Beyond the tough construction of the body, it also sports an ergonomic design and large right-hand grip for easy one-handed shooting or for use while wearing gloves. The rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD monitor has an anti-glare coating for easier viewing in bright conditions, and a dedicated Tool button on the camera body gives you easy access to GPS, eCompass, and other location functions. Additionally, if wearing heavy gloves, camera modes can be changed simply by moving the camera.

Nikon W300 reviews

COOLPIX W300 Digital Camera (Black) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good and bad I bought this camera before traveling to the Galapagos. Took a few photos and a short video before travel to make sure it was working, and it seemed to be OK. However, on my first dive, the camera froze after about 60 seconds in the middle of the first video I shot. After that, couldn't even take a still picture until I got back on the ship, opened the camera and removed the battery. Tried this again on another dive with the same result, so I was stuck in the Galapagos on a bucket list trip without an underwater video camera. The stills were good, but obviously I was very disappointed - missed several good opportunities to film sharks and other marine life. Received a replacement quickly and without problem from B&H, but haven't tried out the new camera yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have always preferred Nikon I needed a good knock around digital point and shoot camera. The Nikon Coolpix W300 seems to fit my needs, something I can take to the beach, back packing, kayaking, without fear of breaking it. My only dislike is the lack of manual control, no f stops or shutter speed that I can set. I have it set at ISO 800, to stop it down and increase speed. Test photos for a point and shoot camera so far are outstanding. The altimeter and compass feature is cute, but as per the instructions, I wouldn't bet my life on it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect Underwater! I got tired of ruining underwater cameras because of housings that sprung leaks and decided to get the CoolPix W300. It's been a super decision so far. I no longer need a housing, and the pictures are great. The camera responds well underwater, focusing easily, and produces crisp, rich images. It's now very easy to switch from still to video, and from micro to macro on the same dive - something I could never do with earlier camera/housing configurations. I only use the camera for underwater photography and other "wet" environments on dive trips and I've never had a problem with it so far, even down to very near its 30 mtrs waterproof limit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is my 2nd Coolpix Like the camera, it is an improvement over my Coolpix 100. I gave it a 4 as the bluetooth downloading to my Iphone is so,so. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Also it took 2 calls to Nikon + 1 to B&H to resolve the initial set-up. The 2nd call to Nikon resolved it but the directions did not exactly match the printed directions from Nikon. Otherwise I love the camera. One last thing, B&H does not sell these but other shops do, there is a neoprene protector that Nikon makes. I bought one and it's already saved the camera from nicks/scratches due to a couple falls off roading on my last trip,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Basic SCUBA Camera At A Reasonable Price! Simple to use, affordable and creates great photos. Controls work pretty much like every other recent Nikon point & shoot. As a former professional photographer and a SCUBA diver for decades, I've owned many UW camera setups -- starting out with mega-buck equipment and finally realizing that I much prefer simplicity. This little gem meets my needs perfectly. I've compared my photos with those of many gear-heads and even they are surprised at the quality images. Admittedly, most all UW point & shoots work best in very clear water and at lesser depths. Typically, we must rely on ambient light since using the built-in flash often creates as many issues as it solves. With these limitations in mind, the Nikon W300 is capable of UW photos suitable for the cover of dive magazines... if the photographer knows what they are doing. Many people have problems with UW photo gear. It has always been so. In my experience, most of these issues could be avoided by simply reading the user manual and using proper care. Any camera that is dropped, or left to bake in the hot sun will not work well. Surgical cleanliness with gaskets is absolutely required. When the only thing that prevents a flooded camera is the seal, a bit of extra care seems common sense. After a lifetime of diving all over the world, I have yet to have even one instance of camera flooding. Unfortunately, many reviewers would rather blame the gear than their own complacency. If properly used and maintained, this Nikon W300 should provide many beautiful photos and quite impressive movies to most careful diving photographers. In my opinion, it is one of the finest basic SCUBA cameras on the market for diving to 100 feet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera for all-weather photo and video This camera is an improvement over the already good Nikon AW130. The picture and quality is improved and it's nice having 4K ability along with a built-in light for both macro photography and for video. It's rugged and produces great pics and vids. It's not "weather sealed", it's "WEATHER PROOF". Great for diving, snorkeling, etc.
