Icon Pro Audio PLATFORM M+ Overview

Designed for mix engineers and producers looking for tactile control of their DAWs, the Icon Pro Audio Platform M+ is a modular control system with eight faders, one master fader, eight rotary knobs, transport controls, and more. It connects to your computer via USB, using MIDI protocol to control channel levels, panning positions, and other mixing decisions. On each channel you’ll not only find a 100mm motorized fader with 10-bit resolution, but also backlit buttons to quickly mute, solo, and record-enable your tracks.

The Platform M+ features software and drivers that allow it to interface with most major DAWs including Cubase, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Reason, Bitwig, and Pro Tools. If you’re a Mac user, you can use the included iMap software to the facilitate simple mapping of MIDI functions. Bank-shifting and channel-shifting buttons are provided; but if you ever find yourself in need of Platform-series gear, you can loop it in via multiple ports in the rear of the unit. A power adapter is included.

Controls at a Glance
  • Eight Channel Faders: The eight 100mm motorized faders are generally used for controlling the track volume of the DAW. They are all touch-sensitive, allowing you to override automation the moment you touch a fader. Also, they are motorized; they will automatically move to reflect the current level of the selected channels in your DAW application. Any automation recorded in a project will be reflected by the fader positions.
  • One Master Fader: This 100mm motorized fader operates the same as the other eight faders. It controls your DAW software's master channel fader, though it operates differently in Pro Tools (Pro Tools is designed in such a way that the fader next to your last channel fader always acts as the master channel fader).
  • Eight Rotary Knobs: The eight rotary encoder knobs can be used for controlling the track pan position, sending aux send levels, and more—you can modify them to adjust specific parameters within plug-ins and virtual instruments.
  • Buttons and Transport: Each channel sports buttons for controlling record, mute, solo, and select parameters. You’ll also find buttons that shift banks of faders or shift faders one channel at a time. Transport controls are also provided, giving you global control over play, stop, record, rewind, fast-forward, loop, zoom, and more.

Icon Pro Audio PLATFORM M+ Reviews

exactly what I had been looking for

I have tried a bunch of lower end control surfaces (none with motorized faders) and couldn't get comfortable enough to use them confidently. As soo as I plugged this in and started using Cubase (v.11 Pro) I was off and running. very little config to be done, very small learning curve... this thing just does what it says... it remembers all of your fader settings from song to song, project to project without having to take notes and hope. after spending about twice this amount in total trying different things, I should have just got this guy in the first place. I have only had it less than a month so time will tell, but it is very well built, very quiet, very easy to use. -Bill

Connection issue (known issue)

I bought this after having read other users complaining that it has connection problems. It drops out or doesn't connect, in device manager showing up either as M+ Audio device, or just USB Audio Device. (randomly between the two names). When it does connect, it works perfectly, and is a great unit. However, 9 times out of 10 it won't connect, making it worthless. Tech support is bad, still waiting for a reply after over 2 weeks.

Excellent Product... Excellent Service

I was looking for a simple motorized fader control surface. I required touch sensitive moving faders, pan, solo, record and select on each channel plus bank / channel controls. The Icon Platform M+ has that plus a few more items that I initially wasn't interested in. I could not locate a Canadian dealer with a unit in stock. The transport controls are of little interest to me because I use a computer keyboard in conjunction with the control surface (Platform M+). However, the shuttle (jog) wheel turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It works well as a shuttle (forward / rewind)... one push on the wheel and it's a jog (scrub) control. Two zoom buttons just above it when activated turn the wheel into a horizontal / vertical zoom wheel... very handy. The touch sensitive faders each have an LED indicator when a fader(s) is touched... good to know when you're rewriting automation. The Mixer button shows / hides the mix window... nice. There are Read / Write buttons for the selected channel. Very quick and handy. I have my qwerty keyboard with these key commands but this is visually quicker. The small footprint is important to me (slightly less than 16 x 8 x 3 inches... w x d x h). The sales service was absolutely excellent. I ordered on a Tuesday, was given the price... free shipping and the option to pay duties / taxes up front. The quote was in $Cdn which I requested. Very reasonable considering our lopsided exchange rates. I was using the Platform M+ on Friday of the same week... not a penny more than quoted. Can't say enough how pleased I am with the quick responses to my questions (pre-ordering) and the super fast - free delivery to Canada.

Very Buggy with Bitwig: Review for Bitwig users

By Joseph

The good: Build quality seems excellent. Metal casing, fluid faders and very nice buttons. It works well in DAW mode with Bitwig as long as you're running their 2.12 beta firmware. Mixer button will not bring up the mixer, but I haven't tried to remap to see if I can get it do it... All in all, not a big deal for me with the mixer button, but some might find that to be annoying. Their older stable firmware does not work with Bitwig. The Bad: At least for Bitwig... Faders will not map to CC control. This means you cannot use faders for any sort of expression control. This is both in DAW mode and User mode. Even if auto-mapping or doing manual mapping, the faders will not map. The icon support is horrible and they suggested that the mapping issue was that I had too many things mapped to the Platform. (I was trying to map just a single fader) There is also the neat problem of the motorized function ceasing to work after switching from DAW mode to User mode back to DAW mode. The faders will no longer move with any volume automation you may have already mapped and it requires full uninstall and re-install of the component. One thing that I'm not a fan of is that you have to fully shut down and reboot the machine to enter the different modes. It would definitely be nice if there was a button you could select while it's powered on to switch between modes... although since User mode is pretty much dead in the water I guess that's no longer an issue. All in all, for a bitwig user, I would recommend this for somebody who is looking to use this as a mixer and recording launcher ONLY. Do not purchase if looking to use it in user mode or to map faders to any sort of expression control. If you have another piece of kit that does the fader mapping for expression control, then this could work side by side, but just know what you're getting into... a non-fully compatible piece of hardware with Bitwig where you are stuck with factory Macki protocols. I'm 50/50 on returning the product as I'm waiting to see how a new keyboard works out in my setup and if I'll just resign myself to this being a mixer only and with hopes that MAYBE they'll get the fader mapping and user mode working with Bitwig.

All you need to map the knobs, faders, etc is the downloadable Platform M+ iMap control application. Everything can be programmed from within the application if your platform M+ is connected to your computer.
