Canon 50mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its close-focusing and perspective control capabilities, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro from Canon is a normal-length tilt-shift lens well-suited for product, tabletop, architectural, and interior photography. Up to +/- 8.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for more stability. A minimum focus distance of 10.6" and a maximum magnification of 0.5x are also benefitted by the range of movements for more control over depth of field when photographing close-up subjects.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design that features a pair of Ultra-Low Dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations as well as one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion. Individual elements also feature both Air Sphere and Subwavelength Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 8.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° in any direction for applying the movements in distinct directions.
Tilt-locking mechanism and a large tilt knob benefit operation and ensure the lens stays in place while shooting.
Two ultra-low dispersion elements help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element minimizes spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.
Both Air Sphere and Subwavelength Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.
A minimum focusing distance of 10.6" along with a maximum magnification of 0.5x benefits working with close-up subjects.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Canon 50mm f/2.8 reviews

TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A worthy successor to the 45mm TS-E This lens is the long awaited update. Based on early use, it is sharper than the 45mm in the center and corners. It also maintains its optical performance better when shifted. Shots taken with the lens if shifted position still exhibit sharpness across the entire image field. The shift/tilt knobs are the Version 2 style with an additional improvement: the Tilt knob is larger which makes minute adjustments required to use Tilt effectively easier to control. Terrific lens for landscape / architectural photography. Highly Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tilt Shift lens Improved in every way over the predecessor 45 mm TSE. Not earth shattering enhancements but solid incremental enhancements. Some will wonder why not use Photoshop to do something similar. That approach is vastly inferior to using a proper tilt shift or perspective control lens. We took photos with this lens and examined the sharpness in Photoshop. The results are impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just excellent I just rented this lens for a week long shoot. Coupled with a Canon 5dsr, a tripod and careful focusing in live view this combination will easily outperform the 4x5 cameras I shot with for 30 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Super Lens! I've wanted to own a TS lens for a long time. When Canon came out with the new additions to their collection I decided to try one out. I borrowed the new 50mm macro through Canon CPS and fell in love with it. Unfortunately when it arrive I was busy and didn't have the time I would have liked to for testing, but I did find time to try in out on my model railroad I built in the basement. It turned me into a believer. This lens is sharp. I used my 5DSR and found out I could stop down to f24 before getting any noticeable diffraction. In this application I was using the tilt function to increase my depth of field and it worked beautifully. I did get out to use the shift to create high megapixel images for a project I was working on. I used a Hoodman to check the focus since it is manual, but generally found it easy to focus anyway. Zeroing out the tilt and shift gives you an excellent standard 50mm lens if you don't mind a little manual focus. 1 A friend questioned my sanity and suggested that software would do the same thing, but it doesn't. correcting perspective in software has its uses, but you loose pixels and I'm sure quality. Software will not increase the depth of field without focus stacking. All I had to do is run down to the basement, take one photograph, download it and I was done. Not a pixel lost. I love this lens. The 24 will be next!
