Rode VideoMic Pro overview

  • 1Description

The Rode VideoMic Pro Plus On-Camera Shotgun Microphone and Windbuster Kit from B&H includes the Rode on-camera shotgun microphone, a micro-USB cable, a 3.5mm TRS cable, and an Auray WSW-VMP-R Windbuster for the VideoMic Pro microphone. It can be used to capture audio for camcorders, DSLRs, and portable recorders as a source of primary and reference audio.

The Rode VideoMic Pro Plus is a supercardioid condenser shotgun microphone with an integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount, a built-in rechargeable battery, an improved response over its predecessor (20 Hz to 20 kHz), and improved RF-immunity as well. It features 3.5mm stereo mini-jack termination, outputs a dual-mono signal, and provides a TRS cable to make the connection for your camera.

Also, the Auray WSW-VMP-R Windbuster provides dual-layered wind protection and reduces unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops. It is custom-made for the VideoMic Pro and is designed to be used over its existing foam windscreen. The simulated fur outer layer works in tandem with the acoustic cloth inner lining to protect the microphone element from air burst without muffling the sound. It is effective in light to moderate breeze conditions (4-17 mph), and you can generally expect a 30 to 40 dB reduction in wind noise.

The Rode VideoMic Pro Plus is a supercardioid condenser shotgun microphone with an integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount, an included rechargeable battery, an improved response over its predecessor (20 Hz to 20 kHz), and improved RF-immunity as well. The microphone can be used to capture audio for camcorders, DSLR, and portable recorders as a source of primary and reference audio.

The VideoMic Pro Plus sports a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack termination, outputs a dual-mono signal, and provides a TRS cable to make the connection. A micro-USB cable is also supplied, which can be used to draw bus-power. The microphone's supercardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimized, and that your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera. Its inherent low-noise circuitry ensures you will not pick up any sound from the microphone's robust innards. The microphone boasts +20 dB settings for DSLR cameras, a flat setting for high-quality preamps, and a -10 dB pad.

Other features abound, such as an Automatic Power Function, a built-in battery door, and a high-pass filter with cuts at 75 Hz and 150 Hz. The filter will prevent low-end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being picked up on the resulting track. If you're unsure how loud the audio you're capturing might be, you can set the right channel to record at a lower level for safety. A selectable high-frequency boost is also available by pressing two lower buttons on the rear digital-switcher simultaneously.

To power the VideoMic Pro Plus, you can use the included rechargeable LB-1 lithium-ion battery, which lasts 100 hours on a single charge, two AA batteries, or the micro-USB cable. This microphone features an auto-powering feature which keeps you from draining battery when the camera is not in use. When connected to your camera, the VideoMic Pro Plus detects plug-in power from the audio input on compatible cameras, and this signals the microphone to switch on. When the mic detects a loss in power, either from powering off or disconnecting the camera, the mic shuts off.

  • Auray WSW-VMP-R Windbuster for Rode VideoMic Pro with Rycote Lyre Shockmount

The Auray WSW Series Custom Windbusters provide dual-layered wind protection, substantially reducing unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with minimal high frequency loss. The WSW-VMP-R Windbuster has been custom-made for the VideoMic Pro with the Rycote Lyre Shockmount and the VideoMic Pro Plus and is designed to be used over its existing foam windscreen. The simulated fur outer layer works in tandem with the acoustic cloth inner lining to protect the microphone element from air bursts without muffling the sound. The velvet back cover with locking drawstring offers protection to the microphone, as well as easy access to the controls.

When used on the VideoMic Pro, the Windbuster is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in light to moderate breeze conditions (4-17 mph), and users can generally expect a 30 dB to 40 dB reduction in wind noise with modest dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the modest high frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the substantial wind noise reduction. In addition to dual-layered wind protection, the WSW-VMP-R helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone.

Rode VideoMic Pro reviews

VideoMic Pro Plus On-Camera Shotgun Microphone and Windbuster Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rode VideoMic Pro Plus - works great, easy setup - no fuss We received the new Rode VideoMic Pro Plus microphone a few weeks back. I made some test-recordings, and also on live interview to date. Thankfully, the ProPlus was very easy to to setup and use the very first time. I'd (like others) don't have too much time to read into the details at first. We followed the Sony recommended setup for external mics, and it worked the first time-- like a charm. The auto-on, auto-off option is very helpful. All my extras on the Sony A6300 have to remember powering on that darn button. Saves my batteries. I'd recommend the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus for all my friends!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mic I had originally ordered Shure VP83 because I thought this Rode was too bulky, but VP83 had clunking noise inside. It sounded like parts were loose inside. No way to get rid of it. Returned it and got this one. There are many tests and reviews on this mic, and this mic really works as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Better sound quality than my old shotgun or the older generation rode videomic pro. Changes to shockmount and rechargeable battery (that indicates how much charge it has left) are great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mic Is Great, Windbuster Kit Not So Much This is my first mic so I don't have anything to compare it to other than the internal mic on my GH5. With that said, I am very happy with the sound reproduction so far. I recently recorded a post-sunrise video on a bayou and there were tons of birds and some yard chickens calling/crowing and they sounded great on replay. The Windbuster is NOT a Deadcat and the fit is a little suspect. There is a draw string at the back of the Windbuster but I am not sure where it is suppose to cinch down. The only obvious space would be between the mic isolation support and the back of mic barrel but there isn't sufficient room to hold the draw string in place. There is an elastic band with a snap that does fit and securely holds the WIndbuster in place. Also there was no diagram showing how to secure the drawstring. So all-in-all I'm happy with the VMP+ but just wish the Windbuster's securing mechanism was more "elegant".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mic, learning to use it. Love the mic. The auto power is my favorite option. The only minus is the instruction manual. It does not go into detail about how to use the buttons. But there's always Youtube, so we're good. I would recommend it to anyone. It's really not that expensive for such a great mic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Sound Used with Lieca V-Lux for better sound quality on video. In camera mic picks up breathing, collar rubbing, etc, this allows most of that to be ignored. I used only once or twice but better than in camera mic. I didn't give 5 stars as instructions could be improved.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Vlogging Microphone! Definitely a worth while upgrade from the previous model. Mic turns on ONLY with Canon and some other dslr's which is great! But with the Canon C100 mk ii DOES NOT auto turn on the mic. Does sound better than the Video Mic Pro. Would recommend this!
