Great quality and flexibility

It just works. I've used this as both a live streaming and recording device on my MacBook Pro. I've typically been using a Nikon D810 1080 stream, and I haven't yet pushed this to 4K. I also don't capture audio through the Magwell, as I use a professional studio microphone and audio interface instead. I don't notice any fan noise at all.

Super Nifty

I needed a camera capture card to stream our cameras on set to clients via zoom. This thing works like a charm in Mac OS. No software installs needed. I love it so much I've just taken to using my A7s as a webcam hooked this thing. The new Sony Capture software was so buggy to stream via USB, so this was a welcome alternative. A lot of people have complained about the fan noise. I don't really notice it as I have several RAID arrays under my desk that also have way louder fans. Additionally, the device runs quite cool, so I wouldn't doubt that you could crack this thing open and swap the fan for a heatsink.

Apple computers (All) invert/flip or mirror video signals. Because of this when using FaceTime or Skype text appears backwards. This capture card states it supports flip/mirroring... is this feature available when using FaceTime or Skype?
Asked by: Derek
According to Magewell the USB Capture Utility V3 allows for Mirror and Flip and they specifically reference Facetime for these functions. They do not reference Skype, but we believe it would work there as well.

question

Works for record 4K video from my a7s1 output hdmi??
Asked by: David L.
The original A7S is able to output UHD 4K at up to 30fps through HDMI. While not specifically tested, the Magewell USB Capture HDMI 4k Plus should be able to see the signal. However this is something that you would need to test out for yourself to see if it works.

You can use that jack to run an audio in source from a mixing board so that it is blended with the HDMI and then output over the USB to the PC.

Could I use this for 4k going into a mac using quicktime app on computer?
Asked by: Reave
Yes, I have used this to capture DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) @ 60hz. I've had it for several years and it still does a better job with 4K capture than other, newer devices.

The USB cable included with this device is very short. What type A to type C cables are compatible with this device. Up until now the only cable I can find that will allow the card to be recognized by my 2019 MacBook Pro is the cable that was included with the card. Even though other cards seem to match the required specifications the device does not power on and is not recognized by the computer.

To amplify on Joseph's answer, there is even a FAQ on the magewell site that says this: Article ID: 002020014 Last Update: 2018-12-14 Applies to: USB Capture Gen 1 Family , USB Capture Gen 2 Family , USB Capture Plus Family For USB Capture Gen 1 Family, USB Capture Gen 2 Family and USB Capture Plus Family products (except USB Capture AIO), the USB-A-to-USB-A connectors they use are customized, so it is not recommended to use other manufacturers' USB cable. in magewell.com/kb/002020014/detail
