The bottom of the case has a pad of foam. Can this be removed to give additional interior height? If so, will the case still have enough protection on the bottom?
It is not advisable to disassemble the Tenba Transport Air Wheeled Case Attache 2214W, doing this will compromise the design, and nullify the 5 year Warranty.

question
is this carry on compatable?
Yes. The external dimensions of the case are 22x14x9 inches, which is the maximum carry-on regulation for U.S. domestic and many international flights. Of course those regulations vary by carrier, so you should check with your airline to be sure.

question
how is this different from the Tenba Air Roadie 21?
This case has the same amount of protection and rigidity as the Roadie, and virtually the same dimensions. However, this model is more basic in its feature set, having only a zippered cable pouch inside, whereas the Roadie has a tripod pocket, built-in zipper lock, steel security cable, removable insert and more. This case is more utilitarian, whereas the Roadie is more full featured.
